UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT L. OMENSETTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED LATCH AND DOOR CHEC KS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,523, dated December 16, 1873; application filed October 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT L. OMENSET- TER, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a Combined Latch and Bolt for Locomotive-Oab and other Doors, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to a combined latch and bolt, which is more especially intended for the doors of locomotive-cabs. It is also adapted to other doors and gates. I use, in combination with the bolt, a stationary segmental perforated rack, with which the lower end of the bolt is connected, when the door is opened in any desired position. The bolt is pivoted at its upper end to the latch, and has a vertical movement in suitable guides attached to the door, as hereinafter described.
The drawing represents an isometrical view of the door and a portion of the inside of the cab with my improvements attached.
A is one side of the cab, and B a door connected therewith. A represents the lower part of one side of the cab atright angles to the side A. O is a latch connected to the door, near its hinged edge, by means of the pivot D, the latch having a slot, a, which admits of longitudinal play on the pivot, in accommodation to the vertical movement of the bolt E, which is connected at vits upper end to the latch by means of the pivot b. The bolt slides in the bearings F F, which are confined to the door by means of screws. It is used for holding the door when opened against the side A of the cab, or in any position partly opened, by means of its connection with the permanent segmental rack G, which has flanges c c at its ends confined, by means of screws, to the sides A and A of the cab, there being holes (I at suitable distances apart, into which the lower end of the bolt is pushed, the latch serving as a lever for operating the bolt. H is a spring having its heel fastened to the door B, and its resilient end bearing against the bolt, to hold it in its elevated position when desired. The front end of the latch O is brought into connection with the hasp I for holding the door in its closed position, as shown in the drawing.
From the above it will be seen that by the simple movement of the latch O the door may be unbolted or fastened in any position that may be most desirable to the engineer. For some purposes the combined latch and bolt may be used without the segmental rack, as,
for instance, when it is only desired to fasten a door or gate wide open, a mere stationary stop in front of the bolt being only required.
I claim as my invention The combination and arrangement of the combined latch 0, bolt E, and segmental rack G with the door B, for holding the latter in an open'position, substantially as described.
