HYDROCARBON-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JosErH B. EDWARDS and BEN- .UE R. l'lrexs, citizens of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, and Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, respectively, have invented new and useful lmproveinents in Hydrocarbon-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for vaporizing hydro-carbon oil and burning the same.
The novelty and many advantages of the invention will appear from the following description and claim when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which'.
Figure l is a vertical, longitudinal central sectional view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation ofthe same. Fig` 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of one of the burners., Fig. 4 is a top viewof the same, and: Fig. 5is ahorizontal central sectional view of the retort or vaporizing chamber with the distributing nozzle therein.
Referring by letter to said drawings: A indicates the retort or vaporizing chamber which may be of a cylindrical form as shown. This chamber is provided in its bottom and the longitudinal center thereof with an aperture a, which isthreaded as shown, and rising from this aperture within the chamber is a nipple b. ln the top wall of the chamber A, is a screw-tapped aperture c which is disposed directly above the nipple b, and is normally closed by a screw plug d, so that ready access may be had to the nipple for cleaning out or other purposes. This retort A is also provided in one of its end walls with a screw-tapped aperture e to receive one end of the oil-supply pipe or tube B. This tube B has a head or enlargement at one end upon which is turned a thread as shown at f, to engage the threads in the aperture e of the end wall of the retort, and this head is also provided with a flange g to bear against said end wall in forming a gas tight connection. This tube B, may have a thread turned on its opposite or outer end for connection with any suitable oil supply. The head of said tube is screw-tapped as shown at h, to receive the threaded branch i oi a nozzle O. This nozzle as better shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, is of U-shape having its outer parallel walls provided with perforations j, and the outer curved walls are also perforated as shown at k. This nozzle is designed to extend well into the retort or chamber A, and preferably in the center thereof, so that the oil supplied thereto may be distributed over a great part of the chamber so as to accelerate the generation of gas therein. This construction while very efiective for thepurpose designed, permits of ready access to the parts and disconnection oi' the same for cleaning and other purposes.
D indicates the reservoir. This reservoir in the present illustration is of trough-shape, although it may be of other suitable coniiguration, and is provided in its top wall, and preferably the longitudinal center thereof, with a tubular branch Z which is threaded at its outer end and takes into the aperture a of the retort A, so as to connect the two through the medium of the nipple b. This reservoir may have legs m, or other suitable supports for sustaining the device in position.
The upper wall of the reservoir is provided with screw-tapped apertures n, there being four shown in the present illustration, although more or less may be used. ln these apertures are arranged the burners E which comprise the tubular body portion p externally threaded at their upper ends, as shown at q, to receive a perforated cap r, which is internally threaded and pro- Ivided with apertures s in its top for the emission of the gas. The body of each burner is also externally screwthreaded at an intermediate point, as shown at t to take into the threaded aperture u of the reservoir, and is externally threaded at its lower end to revceie a threaded cap u. The body portion of the burners is internally reduced and provided therein with an aperture o in the base of which is formed a valve seat to receive the inner end oi a screw-valve w. These valves, which may have a lzerf to receive a screw-driver or other means or turning them, extend out of the caps u so as to permit easy adjustment, and consequently regulate and control the passage of the gas from the reservoir to the burner.
Oil having been supplied through the pipe Beither by gravity or under pressure, as it enters the nozzle and into the retort, it will be rapidly generated into a gas and forced against all of the inner walls of said retort which are highly heated irom the burners, the gases will take the course indicated by the arrows, first passing down the nipple b into the tube l and the reservoir D from which it will rise, and passing through the holes in the caps u on to the burners-where the ignition takes place. The nipple b occupies the center of the retort and extends upward to a point adjacent to the top of the retort, and from this it follows that the nipple will receive from the retort vapor that is in a highly inHammable state.
In order to accelerate the generation of gas in the retort A we place in said retort one or more kinds of ores or other refractory substance calculated to disseminate the oil and produce decarbonizing and super-heating of the samei. c., rapidly convert the oil into vapor or gas.
Having described our invention, what We claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
The combination in a hydrocarbon burner, of a retort, a nipple arranged in the retort and extending upward to a point adjacent to the topwa1l thereof, areservoir located below the retort and equipped with a burner, a conduit intermediate the lower end of the nipple and the-reservoir, and a horizontally-disposcd, 'LT-shaped nozzle arranged in the retort and connected with a hydrocarbon supply pipe and having a plurality of minute apertures connecting its interior with that of the retort.
