Be it known that I, HENRY F. SAWTELLE, a citizen oi the United States of America, and a resident of Lcominster, in the county of Worcester and 'State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fire extinguishers and particularly to fire extinguishers which are adapted for use on railway cars or similar vehicles and has for its object the production of an extinguisher which may be secured to the frame of the vehicle and be accessible for use after an accident has occurred in whatever position the car may be in. i
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a car showing the preferred location of the fire extinguisher embodying the features of this invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section of the same looking toward the end of the car and showing an extinguisher embodying the features of this invention secured to the under side of the framework. In the drawings, 10 represents a. car of any suitable construction mounted upon any desired truck 11. From the bottom'of the frame 12 at either side of the car depends the bracket 13 in which is mounted a cylindrical tank 14 extending transversely of said car, said tank being prevented from end movement by means of the flanges 15 abutting said brackets 13. Each end of the tank 14 is provided with an extension 16 in which is mounted an acid-receptacle 17 which parts throughout is positioned in said extension by means of a plurality of inwardly-extending lugs from the inner walls of said extension and a collar 18 threaded to the open end thereof. The receptacle 17, by these various lugs and the collar 13, is held firmly in position and prevented from being displaced during the movement of the car to which the fire extinguisher may be attached. The receptacle 17 is preferably of glass and is provided with an annular channel 19 cut into the periphery thereof near one end for the purpose of weakening the receptacle so that it will break at this point when an accident occurs to permit the acid to escape into the interior of the tank 14 and mix with the contents thereof to create sufficient gas therein to force out the liquids contained within as will be hereinafter described.
Secured to the extension 16 are a plurality of bosses 20 in which is mounted a pointed pin 21 tl1e point of which engages with the bottom of the annular groove 19 in the receptacle 17. Said pin 21 is prevented from displacement by means of the perforated plate 22 secured to the outer end of said boss 20, the per foration s 23 therein providing a ready means whereby a. nail or other member may engage with the rear end of said pointed pin 21 and be driven thereby into.

This strainer end 31 is adapted to seek the bottom of the tank 14 in whatever position it may take and in ordento pro vide for this the tube 30 is either made flexible throughout its length or at that point where it is connected to the branch 29.
Each of the annular pipes 24 is provided with a plurality of outwardly extending bosses 32 to which is breaded the valve casing 33 the inner end of which is provided with a perforated conical end 34 in which is normally seated a valve 35 held to its seat by the spring 36.
The outer end of the member 33 has threaded thereto a member 37 by turning which the valve 35 may be removed from its seat to permit the passage of'the liquid contained in the tank 14 through the perforated end 34 and through the discharge outlet 38, said discharge outlet extending through a threaded boss 39 to which any ordinary hose may be connected, this hose being normally kept in a compartment 40 secured to the under side of the frame of the car adjacent to the tank 14. In the operation of the device the tanks are preferably the perforations in the weighted strainer end 31 and 15'- through the pipe or tube 30 into the pipes 25 from which they will pass through the valve casing 32 and out through the outlet 38 into the hose which may be coupled thereto. It is obvious, however, that this operation does not commence until the receptacle 17 containing the acids has been broken either by means of the jar due to the accidentor by having the receptacle positively broken by means of the breakingpin 21 being driven sharply into contact with the weakened portion 190i said receptacle. ticularly adapted for use in conna ction with moving vehicles and especially railway cars, it being obvious that irom an inspection oi the drawings and from the description herein given that no matter what may be the position of the vehicle'after an accident has occurred a hose may be readily coupled to at least one of its coupling nozzles and the valve readily operated to permit the contents to flow through its outlet into the hose for use in extinguishing any fire which may have been ignited It is obvious that provision is also made whereby the acid-receptacle is firmly positioned so that it is unliable to breakage during the ordinary movement of the vehicle to whichsaid extinguisher may be attached, while it may be readily broken by the jar caused by the accident to place the fire extinguisher in commission. If such breakage does not occur from the jar caused by the accident provision is made whereby the receptacle may be positivelybroken by a train hand or other person with the simplest implements at hand.
It is believed that from the foregoing the operation of the invention and its many advantages will be fully apparent without further description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
' 1. In a fire extinguisher for vehicles, the combination of a tank secured to the outside 'of the frame of the vehicle and containing a solution; an acid-receptacle at either end thereof; means for effecting a mixture of said hold and solution; amovable tube within-said tank proylded witlra free weighted end adapted to rest on the bottom of said tank; and a pipe connected to the opposite end of said movable tube adapted to provide an outlet from said tank.

In a fire extinguisher for vehicles, the combination of a solution-containing tank secured to the under side of the frame of the vehicle and extending from side to side thereofflan acid-receptacle at either end thereof; and means secured to said tank for breaking said receptacle.

In a fire extinguisher for vehicles, the combination of a tank secured to the under side of the frame of' the vehicle and containing a solution; an acid-receptacle at either end thereof; means for effecting a mixture of said acid and solution; an annular pipe at each end of said tank; a plurality of pipes extending longitudinally of said tank and communicating with said dhhular pipes; a flex bble tube connected to nept said pipes and extending toan acidreceptucle'at either end the bottom of the tank; and a hollow perforated bulb secured to the free end of said flexible pipe.
9. In a fire extinguisher for vehicles, the combination of a tank secured to the under side of the frame of the vehicle and containing a solution; an acid-receptacle at either end ther ot; means for effecting a mixture of said acid and solution; an annular pipe at each end of said an annular pipe at each end of said tank; a plurality of pipes extending longitudinally of said tank and communicatingwith said annular pipes; a flexible tube connected to-one of said pipes and extending tojthe bottom of the tank; and a hose connection for each of said annular pipes. 11. In a lire extinguisher, the combination of a tank containing a solution; an acid-receptacle contained therein; means for eifecting a mixture of said acid and solution;
