Description
hUNITED .STATEs PATENT OFFICE.,`
GEO-EGE confine, oF sENEc'A FALLS, NEW YORK.
' IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-EXTING-U'ISI-IERS.-
Specification forming part of Letters .Patent No. 102,229, dated April 26, 1870; aatedatcd i April 16, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE GoWING, of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca and State of N ew York, have invented a new and Improved Chemical FireExtinguisher Attachment to Fire-Engines; and 1 do hereby de clare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specifica-l tion. v
This invention relates to 'improvements in means for impregnating Water while being thrown upon tires by steam or other lire-engines, or hydrants, or other meanswith fireextinguishing chemical substances, such as sulphate of ammonia, bicarbonate of' soda, and other like matters; and it consists olan airtight case, chest, box, or other vessel suitable for containingl the chemical substances in a suitable condition, provided with a tubular passage through Yit, preferably near Vthe bot! tom, adapted for the, connection of hose or other pipes at each side, so that the water from the engine or other forcing apparatus may be caused to pass through the said tubular passage, which is constructed in sections, meeting together within the case, and capable of adjustment for close contact at the place of n'ieeting, or for separation a greater or less distance, toadmit lthe chemical matters to be drawn in with the current of' water passing i through for impregnating the water with the necessary percentage of chemicals, or for stopping the flow or contact ot' Water therewith.
' The essential object ofthe said arrangement is to provide a means whcrelrvthe impregna tion of the water may vbe caused to take place instantly at snclrtimcs as when the stream is playing, when the chemical substances will be most effective, and to as instantly stop the expenditure ot' the said chemical substances at times when the nature of the fire` is such that it may be preferable to economize them,
and to preserve them from deterioration when the engine not in use. A further object is to provide an arrangement whereby7 the Water may be at any time shut ott' from the case or reservoir for the chemicals, to admit of replenishing the stock without interfering with the pipe or a section of hose.
top being removed to admit an interior view and Fig. 3 shows the attachment of the same toa steam tire-engine.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is the caso or reservoir for the chemical substances. It is represented in this example as mounted on wheels Il, use between two sections of hose. It is provided With a man-hole at the top for supplying the chemical. substances, the said manhole being closed with a plngC.
Drepresents a short section of pi pe projecting from one end bt' the case at the bottom, and provided with a collar, E, and screwthreads F, for coupling on another section ot' The other end of this tube extends into a recess, G., in the bottom of the reservoir, and is countersunk or otherwise adapted for the reception ofthe tapered or other-formed end H of another section of tube, I, arranged in the same line, and capable of sliding to or from the tube D in au exterior tube, K, which latter, together with the tube D, may be formed with and constitute a part of the bottom plate ot' the reservoir, as an economy ot' construction, it' preferred.
The tube K extends outside-ot' the case, and is screwthreaded at L, for the reception of a nut, M, screwing thereon, and engaging with the prolongated tube I- in a way to move the. latter toward or from the tube D. The outer end of this tube l has a collar, N, and screwthread 0, for the connection ot" hose or other pipe, in the same way as provided for connection to the pipe D, so as to make a continuous passage through the case for the water in passing from the engine to the tire. This attachment being connected betweentwo sections of hose, or to a roengine or hose, as dc for adaptation forA Waterland be conveyed vto the fire, and the impregnation so effected may be in any degrec or percentage required by varying the space between the said tubes.
Indicator or scale marks may be applied in connection with the nut M, to show the amount of opening, and thereby the degree of impregnation, or stop pins or screws P may be arranged to arrest the movement of the tube l at any required point.
A pipe and a cock may be attached to the case in any suitable way for drawing ot' the Water contained in the case when the chemicals are exhausted and the case is to be tilled again.
In cases where it is not essential to shut off ythe oW of thel chemicals, 1 may dispense with the adjuster I and attach the hose or pipe directly to the pipe K, extending the latter into the recess G, to meet the pipe l), leaving asmall space for the passage of the chemical substances, proportioning the said space, as may be found necessary,'by experiment, for the chemicals, and this I propose to do in such cases.
Having thus described my iuventioml claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combinatiolnfor holding and delivering or retaining and preserving the chemicals, of' an air-tight case or reservoir, the waterpipes, and adjuster,
2. The combination, with the sectional water-pipes,of the 4adjuster l, arranged for admit ting or preventing the escape of the chemicals, substantially as specified.
3. A chemical {ire-extinguisher attachment for steam fire-engines, arranged substantially as herein described, for connection between the sections of hose, or With a fire engine or other means of forcing' Water, and the hose thereof, and for delivering the chemical substances to the Water, or shutting them olf therefrom, or for varying the amount of the delivery, all substantially as specified.
The above specification ot my invention signed by me this 9th day of October, 1869.
GEORGE COVVING.
