An eighth roll-stand represented at S in Fig. l, like and located adjacent to the stand 5, is shown to be endwise coincident with the latter, and may be provided with two grooves 8 in its upper pass, and three grooves 8" in its lower pass, as indicated. The relative position'ng oi the roll-stands shown in Fig. l enables the rolls 0i the stand 1 to bey connected by suitable gearing, indicated at 9, with those oi the stand3 or driving the rolls of both stands by the same engine, represented at l0; the rolls of both stands 2 and 4 to be connected by suitable gearing, indicated at 9a, to be driven'by one engine, 11', the rolls oi both stands 6 and 7 to be driven by one engine, 12', and those oi both stands 5 and 8 to be driven by one engine, 13, The ingot to be rolled takes the ollowing-described course, indicated by arrows on Fig. l'. The table 2G carries the work to the upper-pass groove 5, irom which it emerges upon a table 27 and is transierred to the table 28, which carries it to the lowerpass groove 5b, whence it emerges upon a table 29 to be carried to the upper-pass groove 6 in roll-stand 6. Each, or any desired number, oi the succeeding tables, hereinafter mentioned, may be provided, near their delivery-ends, like the table 17, with a set oi collars r to produce automatically, in the manner described, this required turning betweenroll-stands, oi the work being rolled.
On the other side oi the stand is provided a stationary roller table composed oi a receiving section 18 in line with'the upper pass groove 2, and a eeding section 19 in line with the lower pass groove 2l. From the lower pass groove 2b another roller table 2() leads to the upper pass groove 3YL oi the roll stand 3, the work emerging oi a table irom which it stood, the system oi roll-stands and stationary tables may be curtailed or extended according to requirement for particular work.
The work leaves the upper pass oi roll-stand No. 3 as a billet, and instead ot running all billets through the succeeding roll-stands, alternate billets may be run ofi, over an extension 24EL oi the table 22, to be rolled in a billet-mill, which is not shown, but involves substantially the same arrangement, as to mechanism, as that shown and described oi the rolling-mill. From the ioregoing, it will be seen that my invention involves a mechanism or passing the work initially through a pass oi the first roll-stand and thence uninterruptedly through the entire Vroll-system, thereby rendering the operation con inuous irom beginning to end, with the advantages oi avoiding delay, removing all need oi re-heating the work, and greatly simpliyng the rolling-mill equipment.
