ROLLING-MILL FOR MANUFACTURING AND DRESSING 0R POLI3HING SHEET METAL.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Sept" 19 1%16.
Application filed December 4, 1914. Serial No. 875,407.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANAsTAsms Miiusnn, a citizen of the-German Empire, and resident of Maxhiittc Haidhof, Kingdom of Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Rolling- Mills for Manufacturing and Dressing or Polishing Sheet Metal, of which the following is a specification.
.My invention relates to improvements in rolling mills for manufacturing and dressing or polishing sheet metal, and more particularly in'the apparatus for feeding the blank from the rear of the roll train to the front side thereof and with its front end between the rolls.
The object of the improvements is to provide an apparatus of this class in which a pair of guide rollers are provided one behind the other and at the rear of the rolls one of which guide rollers is adapted to be shiftedtoward and away from one ofthe reducing rolls. Thereby I am enabled to guide short blanks between one of the reducing rolls and the adjacent guide roller, and
long blanks between the inner and outer guide rollers. Thereby when rolling thin sheet metal or the like of small length the path of the blank when passing from the rear side to the front side of the reducing rolls is reduced as compared to known constructions. Therefore by means of my improved apparatus blanks of difi'erent lengths can be reduced on the same roll train, and
I the (blanks are fed backward to the front side of the roll train along comparatively short paths,-so that the economy of the apparatus is high.
In the preferred form of the apparatus the feeding mechanism is constructed in such a way, that both guide rollers are-simultaneously shiftable. Thereby the guide rollers can be set according to the length of the blank, so that the blanks of different lengths are always fed to the front side of the reducing rolls along the shortest path.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the inner and outer guide rollers are mounted on a common slide which can be set toward and away from the rollers. This construction is preferable because when shifting the slide and simultaneously shifting the inner and outer guide rollers the pressure of the outer guide rollers on the inner ones remains the same in all the positions of the slide,
In order that my invention be more clearly understood several examples embodying the some have been illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which the same letters of reference have been. used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts.
In said drawings l igure 1, is a side view of a rolling mill provided with my improved blank feeding mechanism, Figs, 2 to l, are vertical sections of rolling mills provided with feeding apparatus of modified constructions. Fig. 5 is a plan view (with parts broken away) of the construction shown in Fig. 2; Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate in sectional elevation and in plan view, respectively, another modification of my invention; and Fig. 8 is a detail elevation of a further modification. v
In the example shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings a pair of reducing rolls 6 and c are mounted in housing fi'aines a.-- [at the rear of the upper roll 7) guide rollers a? and e are provided one behind the other. As shown the bearings f of the inner guide rollcrs are shiftably mounted in stationary horizontal guide ways 9 and they are acted hpon by springs h and a screw-threaded spindle i, the spring tending to force the bearings f to the left and in opposition to the spindle The outer guide roller 0 is mounted in bearing blocks 7;: which have shdable supports in stationary horizontal gu de ways m. Springs n tend to force the bearing blocks 7.: to the left. In order to .feed the sheet metal or other blank to the shown in l, the inner roller 05 being sblfted by the spindles z tothc right and the outer roller 6 being forced by the springs n in contact with the roller (1. Thus the blanks are fed through the feeding, apparatus in the direction of the arrows a: and are carried along by the rollers d and The outer roller 6 is driven by a belt striking against the shafts.
meager of theupper reducing roll 1. The upper guide strips 5 1 are provided with guide rollers Below the guide strips 53 and near the upper reducing roll 1 curved guide strips 57 are secured to a transverse rod 56 secured to the housing frame, which guide strips carry guide rollers o8.
At the front side of the upper reducing roll 1 curved guide strips 59 are provided. The upper part of the upper reducing roll is engaged by guide rollers 61 provided on a shaft 60, and the front side of the upper reducing roll 1 is engaged by guide rollers 63 mounted on a shaft 62.
One end of the shaft 11' carries a belt pulley 641 which is adapted to be rotated by meahs of a belt 64.
The operation of the apparatus shown in Fig. 2 is-as follows: If it is desired to roll sheet metal plates of a medium length, the main slide 6 is set in the position shown in Fig. 2. The guides 44 are set in their upper positions shown in dotted lines. The guides 39 are in their lower positions shown in full lines. The blank. is placed on the table 4 and brought between the reducing rolls 1 and 2. After the blank has passed between the reducing rolls it is guided by the guide strips 39 between the guide rollers 14 and 15. After the blank has passed between these guide rollers it is engaged between the guides 53 and 54 by means of which it is passed between the upper part of the upper reducing roll 1 and the guide rollers 61. Finally the blank is fed downward by means of the guides 59 and the rollers 61 and 63, whereupon it is again passed between the reducing rolls and 2 and thereafter between the guidelrollers 14 and 15. This operation is repeated until the blank has been reduced to the desired thickness. Now the guides 39 are set in the upper position shown in dotted lines by means of the handlevers 42, so that the blank after passing between the reducing rolls 1 and 2 is fed to and re moved from the frame as. The shafts 38 and 43 of the guides 39 and 4d are located above the horizontal line which is tangential of the upper part of the lower reducing roll 2. Therefore, when ;the guides 39 and 44 are set in the upper positions shown in dotted lines, they permit the finished blank to be removed substantially in horizontal direction. so that the blanlr is not bent by If it is desired to roll short blanks, the main slide 6 is shifted to the left by means of the spindles 11, until the inner guide rbllers 14c are in contact with the upper reducing roll 1, as is indicated in the figure by a circle shown in broken lines. The outer guide rollers 15 are shifted to the right by means of the spindles so that they are out of engagement with the rollers 14. "The guides 39 arerocked upward into the position shown in dotted lines, and the guides 14: are set in the positions shown in full lines. The guide strips 31 and the frames 34 are removed and in lieu thereof a can riage such as shown at 36 in Fig. 3 is wheeled on the frame portion 3 to a position below the slide 6. After passing between the reducing rolls 1 and 2 the blank is passed around the upper reducing roll 1 by means of the guides 44-, the rollers 14, the guides 57, the rollers 61, the guides 59, and the rollers 68, whereupon it is again fed between the reducing rolls 1 and 2. When rolling short blanks guide rollers of smaller diameter (corresponding to the roller 65 of Fig. 3) may be provided in lieu of the upper guide rollers 61. After the blank has been sufficiently reduced, the guides 44 are rocked into the position shown in dotted lines by means of the foot lever 50, so that the blank is removed below the said guides and to the carriage 36.
When it is intended to roll blanks of great length the mainslide 6 is, by means of the spindles 11, shifted to the right of the position it has in Fig. 2. Otherwise the rolling and feeding of the blank around the upper reducing roll is effected in the same Way as the rolling and feeding of the blank of medium length which has been described above. a
When setting the main slide 6 the pressure of the outer guide rollers 15 on the inner guide rollers 14 and on the blank is not changed. By rotating the spindles 25 the said premure can be regulated as desired in all the positions of the slide 6.
When using the mill for polishing short or long blanks means must be provided for dressing or smoothing the upper and lower reducing rolls 1 and -62. In this case the transverse bar 28 is equipped with a layer 28 of felt which is used for dressing the lower roll 2, as is shown in Fig. 3. he
upper roll 1 is dressed by means of r(%ls 63 and 65which are covered with layers 3 and 65 0 felt.
If rolli g or polishing of short blanks is not necessary, the: feeding apparatus can be constructed in the manner shown in Fig. 4,
which is similar to the construction shown.
in. Fig. 2. However in he apparatus shown in Fig. the guides 57 K re omitted.
In the example shown in Fig. 4 the guide strips 53 and 54 secured to the transverse bars 7 and 8 engage with the ends which are directed to the upper part of the upper reduc-' ing roll 1 between two sets of guide strips 86 and 67 which are secured to the bearing blocks of the upper roll 1 by means of transverse rods 68 and69. Furthermore laterally of the sets of strips 66 and 67 g'uide plates 71 are secured to the rods 68 and 69. Between the guide plates 71 guide plates 79 e located which are secured to A363 the transverse rods 7 and 8 and laterally of the sets of strips and When. shifting; the slide (3 the guide which. consists of the strips and and the plates 72 is telescoped within the guide provided by the strips 66 and G7 and the olates 71. By the said guides the blank is securely fed to the upper part of the upper reducing: roll 1 in all the positions of the slide 6. instead of the sets of strips 53, G6, and (17 plates may be provided. These plates are prefer-- ably provided with tongues which engage between the rollers 14 and 15. 1
Instead of a group of rollers l-l: and 15 single rollers may be provided on the shafts 1G and 17 which are broader than the rollers of the groups shown in the figures.
Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate a mill in which the two rollers 14 and 15 extend over the entire Width between the frames 10, and plates 53, 54, and 57 are each made of a single piece or" sheet metal instead of strips as in Fig. 5, and, like rollers ll and 15, these plates extend over the entire width between the said frames.
