ToaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, WILLIAM ARTHUR \VILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric- Light Supports; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to supporting and holding devices, and more particularly to one adapted for sup porting incandescent drop lights or the like at any elevation and angle that will best suit the convenience of the user.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which will be especially useful in machine shops, mills, offices and the like.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved supporting or holding device, the support at the lower end thereof being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, parts being broken away to more clearly illustrate the construction; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the attaching bracket and base; Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a detail view of the bracket in which the transversely slidable lamp-carrying bar is mounted; Fig. 6 is a detail view of the support in which said bracket'is pivoted; and Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views of the guides for the extension bars.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes a circular base plate, which is in the form of a bracket adapted to be attached to the wall, ceiling, floor or other support in the room in which the device is to be used. This bracket has upon its outer face oppositelydisposed and outwardly-curved legs 2 formed with feet or flanges 3, which are adapted to receive attaching screws or similar fastening means. From the center of the inner face of the circular plate 1 projects a pivot stud 4 and surrounding said stud upon said base of the plate is an annular series of radially extending ratchet teeth 5. Rotatably mounted upon the pivot stud 4 is a hanger 6, which comprises a tubular head or sleeve 7 formed with a forked or bifurcated end having spaced arms or members 8. The stud projects through the bore or central opening in the sleeve or head 7 and is retained therein by a pivot, pin or the like 9. Upon one side of the sleeve or head 7 are formed apertured lugs or ears 10, between which is pivoted a locking lever 11 having two arms 12 13. The
short arm 12 has a beveled end, which engages the ratchet teeth 5 on the base plate 1 and serves as a locking pawl to hold the hanger 6 against rotation upon .the pivot stud 4. The long arm 13 is of segmental-shape and is formed in its inner edge with ratchet teeth 14. These ratchet teeth are engaged by a pawl 15 formed upon a head 16 mounted on one end of a swinging extension bar 17. This member comprises a cylindrical bar 18, which projects through and slides in a yoke 19 in the form of a ring or annular band provided with pivot studs or trunnions 20 at diametrically opposite points. The yoke 19 is disposed between the iree ends of the arms 8 of the hanger 6 and its trunnions 20 are engaged with curved bearing recesses 21 formed at opposite points in said arms 8.
The sliding bar 18 has at one of its ends a forked or bifurcated portion 22, in which is secured one of two slidably connected extension bars 23, 24, and at its 0P1 posite end is formed a slot or recess to receive a reduced portion of the head 16, said reduced portion or tongue being riveted in said recess, as shown at 25. The head 16 has a flange, which projects beyond the bar 18 and is engaged by one end of a coil spring 26, which surrounds said bar and has its other end bearing against the yoke or ring 19. This spring serves to force the bar 18 longitudinally in said yoke and thereby hold the pawl 15 in engagement with the segmental ratchet 14. The pawl 15 is formed in a loop 28, through which the end 13 of the lever 11 projects. It will be observed that when the bar 18 is moved longitudinally in the yoke 19 against the tension of the spring 26, the pawl 15 will be retracted from engagement with the teeth of the ratchet 14, so that said bar and its yoke 19 may be swung angular-1y upon the pivots or trunnions 20, so that the lever 11 will drop to permit its pawl 12 to disengage the ratchet teeth 5 on the base plate 1 and hence permit the hanger 6 to be rotated upon its pivot stud 4. When the bar 18 is operated as above-mentioned the outer portion of the loop 28 engages the outer curved edge of the end 13 of the lever 11 and moves the latter downwardly to disengage its pawl 12 from the ratchet, but the downward movement of said lever is limited by the engagement of a shoulder 29 formed on its inner pivoted end with the sleeve or head 7, as will be seen upon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings. The extension bar 23 has its free end secured in a combined guide and clamp 30, through which the other extension bar 24 is adapted to slide and in which it is adjustably secured by a cam lever 31. The bar 24 has secured upon its inner end the guide 32, which latter is also adapted to slide upon the intermediate portion of the bar 23. The parts 30, 31 retain the bars 23, 24 in parallel relation and permit them to be slidably adjusted upon each other, so as to make the extension member 17 of any desired length. Secured upon the free or outer end of the extension bar 24 is a ringshaped supporting bracket 33, in which is pivotally mounted a combined guide and clamp 34 for a transversely sliding lamp-carrying bar 35. This bracket is secured to the extension bar 24 by means of screws passed through an arm 36 extending laterally from said ring. The lower edge of this ring is provided with ratchet teeth 37 for a purpose to be described. The guide and clamp consists of a plate 38 which has a depending annular flange 39 fitted loosely in the upper end of the ring 33, and a central slotted opening 40, through which the shank of the clamping member, hereinafter described, passes. This plate 38 is provided with oppositely-arranged, upwardly-projecting lugs 45 and 46, against which the ends of a spring 47 abut. A movable bar 48 is riveted at its upper end to a spring 47, about midway thereof, and projects through the opening 40 in the plate 38 and is provided at its free ends with lugs or dogs 49 and50, which engage the teeth 37 and holds the bar 35 which extends through an opening in the bar 48, in adjusted position. In one or both of the ends or": the bar 35 may be provided notches 35 or other suitable means for engaging the electric wires 60, which suspend an incandescent electric lamp 61 from the usual ceiling rosette 62.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the light 61 or any other object or article may be suspended or supported at any desired point or place by means of the invention. By adjusting the extension bars 23, 24 upon each other, the lamp may be raised or lowered and by adjusting the bar 35 it may be moved sidewise or laterally. 13y sliding the bar 18 against the tension of its spring 26, the extension member 17 may be swung and rotated to any desired angular position, and when said bar is released, said member will be automatically locked in such position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. A device of the character described comprising an attaching base, an element rotatable thereon, means for locking said element against rotation upon said base, a slidably and pivotally mounted carrying member upon said element, and a spring for projecting said member into engagement with said locking means, whereby said element and said member will be simultaneously locked against movement.
2. A device of the character described comprising an attaching base, an element rotatable thereon, a carrying member slidably and pivotally mounted in said element,
and means for simultaneously locking said element and said member against movement.
3. A device of the character described comprising'an attaching base, an element rotatable thereon, a carrying member slidably and pivotally mounted in said element, means for adjusting said carrying member, and means for simultaneously locking said element and said carrying member against movement.
4. A device of the character described comprising an attaching base having ratchet teeth, and a rotatable element mounted upon said base, a carrying member slidably and pivotally mounted in said element, a pawl upon said carrying member, a spring for projecting the latter, and a lever pivoted upon said element and having a pawl to engage the ratchet teeth upon said base and ratchet teeth for engagement by the pawl on said member.
A device of the character described comprising an attaching base having ratchet teeth, and a rotatable element mounted upon said base, a carrying member slidably' and pivotally mounted in said element, a pawl upon said' carrying member, a spring for projecting the latter, a lever pivoted upon said element and having a pawl to engage the ratchet teeth upon-said base and ratchet teeth for engagement by the pawl on said member, means for lengthening and shortening said carrying member, and a transversely adjustable folding means upon said carrying member.
G. A device of the character described comprising an attaching base having an annular series of ratchet teeth and a concentric pivot stud, a hanger rotatable upon said stud and having spaced arms, a yoke having trunnions rotatable in hearings in said arms, a bar as 18 slidable in said yoke, a head upon one end of said bar having a loop and a pawl therein, a coil spring upon said bar between said head and said yoke, a lever pivoted upon said hanger and having a pawl to engage the ratchet teeth on said base, and a segmental arm to project through said loop and formed with ratchet teeth to receive the pawl in said loop, and an adjustable carrying means upon the opposite end of said bar.

A device of the character described comprising an attaching base having an annular series of ratchet teeth and a concentric pivot stud, a hanger rotatable upon said stud and having spaced arms, a yoke having trunnions rotatable in hearings in said arms, a bar as 18 slidable in said yoke, 21. head upon one end of said bar having a loop and 'a pawl therein, a coil spring upon said bar be tween said head and said yoke, a lever pivoted upon said hanger and having a pawl to engage the ratchet teeth on said base and a segmental arm to project through said loop and formed with ratchet teeth to receivethe pawl in said loop, adjustably connected extension bars, one of said bars being secured to the opposite end of the firstmentioned bar, a support upon the other of said extension bars, a combined guide and clamp pivoted in said support, and a suspending bar transversely slidable in said clamp, substantially as shown and described.
8. A device of the class described comprising an attaching base, an element rotatable thereon, a carrying member mounted on said rotatable element, a support on said member, a combined guide and clamp pivoted to said support, and a suspending bar adjustable in said clamp.
