Description

PATENTED JULY 9, 1907.
'R. BALFOUR. PILE DRIVER.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 4, 1907.
INVBN'I'OR. ILBALFOU'R ROBERT BALFOUR, OF OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA.
FILE-DRIVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1907.
Application filed February 4, 1907- serial No. 355,527.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT BALrouR, of the city of Ottawa, in the county of Carleton, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, bridge-builder, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pile-Drivers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pile'drivers for driving piles on the batter or convergent, and the objects of my invention are to provide means whereby the piles may be driven on the batter with great accuracy and such means as may be readily and quickly adjusted to suit the inclination of the different piles.
These means comprise essentially a frame having a pulley on the top thereof, a casting protruding forwardly from the top of the frame, a pair of leading tracks pivoted to the casting, and adapted to swing in a plane which is located forwardly of the front of the frame, a hammer reciprocating in the tracks, and a rope connected thereto and extending over the pulley, all as hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the pile driver. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail through the pivoting means.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A designates the pile driver as a whole, which in the embodiment illustrated is of the overhanging type adapted to be advanced forwardly over the caps of the piles already driven.
B is the base which is supported slidably on the caps of the driven piles, the means shown to accomplish this being a plurality of rollers a, which are secured to the cap 9 of the driven piles b.
At the front end of the platform there is erected a suitable frame C on the top of which is supported a pulley D, preferably by the casting c.
E are the parallel leader tracks in which the hammer F reciprocates both being of the usual type. The tracks are as usual united by a plurality of cross-pieces (Z. The tracks are pivoted at the upper extremity to the frame by suitable pivotingmeans G, the pivoting point being so selected with reference to the inclination of the piles being driven that it'will be the point of convergence of the axial lines of the piles, whereby all the adjustment necessary to drive piles in the same row will be to swing the tracks about. their pivoting point.
The pivoting means illustrated comprise a pivoting bolt h extending through the casting a and convergent and which will extend around a second sheave provided on the pulley D.
In operation, the batter or inclination of the piles to be driven are first ascertained and then the frame 0 is constructed of such a height that the pivoting point of the tracks will be substantially at the convergence of the axial lines of the piles.
In practice the piles in the transverse rows are inclined to each other as shown, each being at a different inclination, and to drive the different ones it is only necessary to swing the tracks about their pivoting point until their direction coincides with that of the axial line of each pile. The pile may then be driven in the usual manner. As all of the horizontal rows in a given construction are substantially the same, the frame having once been madeof the right size, will enable all the piles to be driven with no calculation and very little adjustment.
The essential feature of the invention lies in the tracks which hang from a pivot which is located at the convergence of the axial lines of the piles.
It will therefore be readily understood that .while I have described an embodiment of the invention in detail yet changes within the scope of the appended claims may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim as my invention is:
In a pile driver, the combination with the frame and the leading tracks, of a casting secured to the top of the frame, and forwardly protruding therefrom, pivoting means connecting the tracks with the outer end of the casting, a pulley secured to the frame, a hammer reciproeating in the tracks and a rope connected to the hammer and extending over the pulley, as and for the purpose specified.
Signed at Ottawa, this 29th day of January, 1907.
ROBERT BALFOTJI.
In the presence of Russnn S. SMART, WM. A. \VYMAN.
