Description

WILLIAM ALBERT MQADAMS, OF BAY SHORE, NEW YOR K.-
METHCD 0F CASTING ALUMINIUM ALLOYS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentediluly 9, 1907.
Application filed June 29,1906. Serial No. 324,059.
To (Ill whom it may (or/em:
lie it known that i, 'uaaan ALBERT MtiAnaMs, a eitizen ol the United States, and a resident hi Bay Shore, in the eounty ol Sull'olk and State ol' New York, have invented a new and useful Method oi Casting: Aluminium Alloys, ol' \vhieh the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the method of Pasting alu minium alloy, for example an alloy trompostal ot' aluminium, Zill( and Popper in whieh the aluminium predominates. the ohjeet, being to maintain the strength of the east ing and at the same time employ molds made of finely granulated material eonnnonly spoken of as sand molds. it has heeu found that a high degree oi tensile and t-ompression strength in ens-tings oi this alloy is obtained in great part by rapidly removing the heat from the molten metal alter it is poured and to insure this removal ol' the heat metal molds have been used with Walls having: a predettn'mined tliiekuess with respect to the easting to remove the he: i the proper rapid rate. These metal molds are expensive to make and materially add to the expense of the castings and my present. invention is d ireeted to the method of room ng the heat at. the proper rate from the molten metal and at the same time using molds made up of linely granulated material handled in substantially the same manner as sand molds.
To this end my method t'OllSlSlS broadly in utilizing: the heat ol' the molten mass oi the ousting \vhile hold in lorm by a mold lormed oi tiuely gramllated material. to set up around the tasting a solid body of good heat- "ondlu'tilul material for rapidly removing the heat from the f'ilFllllfl.
ln praetiee take linely sulalivided 1-:
'bornnduin and erystallized sugar. also linely subdivided, in the proportion of about ten pounds of earborul'ulum to twelve (moves of sugar and thoroughly mix them-tonether, spraying with wat r sullieient. to reduee the mass to a plasl it state of sullieient stillness to retain its posit ion' when pressed into form around the pattern of the arlit'le to be last.
()n pouring the molten metal into this mohL-the sugar will eement the enrboruudum into a solid body and the earborunduoi thus cemente: into a solid body will rapidly remove the heat from the molten metal \vhieh is to t'orni the casting. it is found furthermore that the lhiekness oi the solid body formed about the casting will hear the proper relation to the thickness of the casting throughout its several parts so that the heat will-be removed at the proper rate from the thiel-zer as well as the thinner parts 01' the east ing. v
While the mixture above referred to will serve to remove the heat from the casting at the propel rate. 1 prefer to introduce into the mm are a eertain pereem tree of yellow (lay in a lowly subdivided state, for example, about. ten ounces of the clay to ten pounds of the earhortuidum and twelveminees ol' sugar. This elay prevents tho'sugar and carlmruudum lroni elegging the sieve and gives moldingqualities to the mixture.
1n the event the aluminium .alloy should he ol' such a nature as to generate moreor 1 gas, 'it would be de sirahle to introduee a pew-outage of finely subdivided arbon in an amountde 'iend'uig upon the amount of eseapine gases to be taken care oi lor instance, twenty ounces of earhon to ten pounds of earboramhun, twelve (job i ounces of sugar and ten ounees of clay.
When the casting has been completed and removed from the mold, the solid body formed around the cast-' ing may he ground or otherwise mashed into a. linely subdivided state and again used by the introduetilm ot a small pereentage of sugar.
What I elaim is:--
l. In the art oi \stlug. forming: a mold of plustie material capable of being eonverted by heat into a solid mass of good heat eonduetine; properties. casting the molten metal therein and utilizing the heat ol the molten metal cast therein to eonvert the said pl: (2 mold into a solid hotly of ,u'ood heal eomlurting properties immediately around the cast metal for nhsorhlng" the heat. from the said east metal. [u the art of rusting. forming, a mold of plastic mate rial capable olf hoina' eonverted lvy heat into a solid mass of good heat conducting properties, (tasting the molten metal in said mold and utilizing the heat of the molten metal to eonvert the, plaslle mold into a solid good heat eoudut-ling hotly immediately surrounding the metal and varying in illil'lilloss as the dill'erent parts of the casting to be formed vary in thickness and mass In testimony, that I claim the foregoingas my invention, 1 have signed my name in presence of two witnesses, this :sth day ol' June, 1901
