Description

,new and useful Improvements in UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEINRICH DOLMETSCH, OF STUTTGART, GERMANY.
INTERNAL WALL-COVERING.
To all whom it may concer/tf Be it known that I, HErNRICH DoLMn'rsCH, architect, a subject of the King oi Wrtemberg, residing at No. 41 Tbingerstrasse, Stuttgart, Germany, have invented i Internal Wall-Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
Attempts have already been made to prevent disturbing acoustic reverberatiQns-so-called echoesin large halls and the like by simply roughening the smooth mural surfaces, by wainscoting the walls with wood, or by facing them with panels of compressed cork, peat or the like, or by hanging the walls with woolen or cotton fabric, thick rough paper, iustian laid in folds, velvet or similar material. These means, however, have been found either inadequate or too troublesome and liable to give rise to fires; and furthermore the means last referred to, in particular, can not be employed without the interior architecture being detrimentally affected. Walls constructed of or lined with panels, for instance, of pressed cork, though sound-proof do not absolutely prevent reverberations oi sounds.
The object in view is entirely overcome according to my invention by the provision of a covering consisting of fragments of cork assembled closely together.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of aportion oi a wall vfaced according to my invention, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of a portion of a somewhat modied construction of wall.
Referring more particularly to Fig. l, fragments of cork a (which if desired may have been specially treated forthe purpose) are secured to a canvas or wirework backing or the like c by means of an adhesive agent b, whereby a species of cork wall-hanging is formed which can be applied to the plaster e or direct to the brickwork f by the aid oi an adhesive medium d.
In the modification illustrated in Fig.2 the cork facing is corrugated, so that air-spaces are left between v Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed July 14, i906. Serial No. 326,200.
Patented July 9, '1907.
it and the plaster or brickwork, similarly as is the case with corrugated pasteboard wall linings, whereby the desired action is increased.
In order to render the granulated cork particularly "soft and elastic, `it 4may after removal of all hard particles be boiled or steamed for a certain space ot time and then crushed in a special roller mill. During the boiling operation the cork can be dyed any desired color without its character being in'any way affected.
The new wall covering is particularly'easy and convenient to apply and is cheap and also fire-prooi, a matter or` the greatest importance in the case of buildings which have already stood many years. In contradistinction to fabric hangings and woodl paneling, moreover, the new covering can be applied to either flat or curved surfaces without the architecture being in any wise affected.
By artistic variation of surfaces of coarse and finely granulated cork, by provision of friezes and roses and by the use of various colorsall 'esthetic requirements can be met,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A wall covering consisting of a exible backing, a compact layer of granulated cork applied thereto, and a suitable adhesive hacking for said exible backing for securing the same to a wall.
2. A wall covering consisting( of a corrugated backing,
a compact layer of granulated cork. applied thereto, and a suitable adhesive backing for 'said corrugated backing for securing the same to a Wall.
3. A wall covering consisting of a exible woven wire backing, a compact layer of granulated cork applied thereto, and a suitable adhesive backing for said flexible backing for securing the same to a Wall.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this twenty-eighth day of June 1906, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HEINRICH DOLMETSCH.
Witnesses ERNST ENTENMANN, Gor'rHoLD VOGT.
