HORACE MCCORMICK AND MELVILLE A. LUMBARD, OF DES MOINES, IOWA.
.REGISTER FOR SHORT ACCOUNT SYSTEMS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HORACE McCormick and MELVILLE A. LUMBARD, of Des Moines, Polk county, Iowa, have ments in Registers for Sl1ort Account Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to short account systems and the object of our invention is to improve the device certain pending application shown and described in a of Horace McCormick forLetters Patent of the United States for indicators for duplicate sale slip files.
The invention consists generally in providing a file having a bail adapted to extend beyond the outer end of the file for convenience in removing it from the cabiarranged to hang in front of the net, and an indicator file before it has been removed and to swing in and ride on the bail .when the file is put back into the cabinet after the transaction with the customer for whom the file is appropriated.
In the accompanying (:lrawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a front elevation of a cabinet is an end view partially in section of the same, a portion of the base embodying our invention. Fig. 2
of the cabinet being View of a portion of is a side elevation of the released and Fig.
broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail swung outwardly away from the liles. 5 is a detail sectional view the indicators are mounted.
In the drawing, 2 represents the base and 3 the upcabinet divided into a series of right portion of the pockets or pigeon holes 4 in which the files are placed.
The base 2 has a suitable writing bed 5, preferably of the base the subject matter of a companion application for patent herewith.
Hinged at 6 to the top of the cabinet is a frame 7 preferably of channel bar metal substantially U-shaped in form and adapted to be secured at its lower end to the cabinet by a suitable lock 8. This frame is capable of being swung back and forth on its hinges toward or from the front of the cabinet. A series of rods 9 connect the sides of the frame in front of the partitions between the horizontal rows of pockets, and these rods have annular recesses 10 whereon a series of indicator clips 11 are mounted and adapted to swing freely toward and from the mouth of the pockets. These indicators are preferably of metal and may be swung independently of one another or simultaneously by means of the frame whereon they are supported. Each indicator plate is preferably located at one side of its pocket and depending in front of the same in the path Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 1 1906- invented certain new and useful Improvethe front of the cabinet. Fig. 4 cabinet with the indicators showing the position assumed by an indicator when a file is withdrawn from the cabinet. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing one side of the frame and a portion of one of the rods on which Patented July 9, 1907. Serial No. 340,892.
of the file. The files which we have indicated by reference numeral 12 form the subject matter of a companion application herewith and are provided with bails 13 preferably of spring material hinged at one end of the file and extending thereover and provided with loops l4 projecting beyond the opposite ends and forming finger pieces to aid in removing the file from the cabinet. The sides of the bails are near the edges of the files and in position to engage the indicators and swing them inwardly to a horizontal position Where they will be partially concealed by the end of the file. In withdrawing the file the indicators will ride on the sides of the bails and cannot catch on the file or in any way prevent its convenient withdrawal.
In using the device the customer having made a purchase or a cash payment, the clerk will take the customers file out of the cabinet and after making the proper entry on the slip therein or inserting another slip will thrust the file back into the pocket. The indicator when the file is withdrawn Will swing outwardly and permit such withdrawal and will then re turn to a vertical position and when the file is pushed back into the case the end of the indicator will engage the bail and sliding thereon will swing inwardly to a horizontal position until it is almost concealed by the outer end of the file. The bookkeeper can then by glancing at the cabinet easily ascertain the customers whose files have been withdrawn and that only such files will contain entries to be transferred to the books. The numbers on the files visible to the clerk will correspond with the numbers on the pages of a ledger which forms the subject matter of a companion application herewith and wherein the account with each customer is entered.
The bookkeeper will know that all those files Whose indicators hang vertically in front of the pockets have not been disturbed and that it will be unnecessary to take down each file separately and examine its con tents. Before beginning the days business the bookkeeper or clerk in charge of the cabinet can unlock the frame at the bottom, swing all the indicators outwardly to withdraw them from their horizontal position in the pockets and then relocking the frame allow the indicators to swing down in front of the pockets where they will be in the path of the files withdrawn during the day.
We claim as our invention l. The combination. with a cabinet having a series of: pockets, of duplicate sale slip files adapted to [it within said pockets, bails hinged at one end on said files and extending thereover to the opposite end, and indicators arranged in front of said pockets in the path of the files when they are withdrawn, and said indicators being adapted to engage said bails when the files are thrust into the pockets and to be swung by said bails to a substantially horizontal position within said pockets and be partially concealed by the outer ends of the files, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a cabinet having a series of pockets, of duplicate sale slip files fitting therein, a series of indicators arranged in front of said pockets in the path of said files and adapted to be swung outwardly when the files are withdrawn from the cabinet, and to be swung inwardly into the pockets and partially concealed by the ends of the files when a file is returned to the cabinet after the entry therein.
The combination, with a cabinet having a series of pockets and files for duplicate sale slips fitting within said pockets, of a frame mounted in front of said pockets, a series of indicators carried by said frame and arranged normally to hang in a vertical position in front of said pockets and to be swung outwardly when a tile is removed,
and swung inwardly to a partially concealed position when a file is inserted into a pocket, the indicator riding on the tile during its withdrawal from the pocket or its insertion therein, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a cabinet having a series of pockets and files fitting therein, of a frame hinged on said cabinet, a series of indicators carried by said frame and adapted to hang in front of said pockets in the path of the file and arranged to be swung outwardly when a tile is withdrawn from a pocket, or moved inwardly to a partially concealed position when a file is inserted into a pocket, whereby the clerk at a glance can determine the number of files and which ones have been removed during the days business, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a 'cabinet having a series of pockets, of duplicate sale slip files adapted to fit within said pockets, a series of indicators arranged in front of said pockets in the path of the files and normally hanging in a vertical position in front of said pockets and adapted to he swung outwardly when a file is removed and swung inwardly to a partially concealed position within the pocket when a file is inserted therein the indicator riding on the file during its withdrawal from the pocket or its insertion therein. substantially as described.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands this 18th day of October, 1906. I
HORACE MPCORMICK. MELVILLE A. LUMBARI).
