Be it known that I, ROBERT JoHNs, a citizen of the .United States, and a resident of Fairmont, in the Molds, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
My invention relates to the construction of blank molds, or that class of molds used particularly in 'making pressed articles of glass ware and which are employed in connectionvwith presses and blowing machines of that type on which bottles are made by first being partly shaped through a pressing process and completely formed by blowing compressed air into the partly hnished article. This class of mold is made of one, two or three pieces, and when formed of two or three sections or pieces said sections are permanently bolted togethr-r and the bottom section is provided `with a pushing valve operated by la lever to press the article partly from the mold, so that it can be gripped and transferred to the blow mold.
Since the blank molds receive the molten glass directlyl from the furnace they soon become very hot,
rendering it exceedingly diflicult to run'the molten glass into or to force the pressed glass out from the mold. It is customary to effect a cooling of such molds by the use of large volumes of air under strong pressure, but with` little success, the ineffectiveness of the cooling air being due chiey to the absence of any vent in the bottom of the mold that would provide a passage for the cool air in at the top and out at the bottom of the mold.
1t is the object of my invention to provide a simple, easily applied and readily operated means for keeping the molds at working heat and thus increasing their rate of production, the means employed being such that the moment the valve is raised to press a piece from the mold air vents are opened from the bottom, permitting a current of air from the top downward through and out from the mold at the bottom, said vents being automatically closed when said valve is seated.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reierenceindicate corresponding parts in all the figures. i
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the improved mold showing the valve seated, the section being taken practically on the line 1-1 of Fig. 3; the lower air vents being closed by said valve; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the lower portion of the mold, showing the valve pressed up and the air vents in the bottom Iopened to the interior or blankchamber of the mold; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the -lower 0r Ibase section -of the mold, the section being taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The mold illustrated is made in two separable sections, an upper or main section A and a lower or base section B, which latter is ventilated. The base sec- :tion B is provided with a recess 10 in its upper face, t0 receive a similarly shaped boss 11 at the bottom of the main section A, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The upper or main section A is of conventionalI construction, being provided with a blank Ychamber 12, or a chamber into which the molten material is poured, said chamber having the customary tapering formation, being open at the top and bottom and provided at its top with two horizontal adjoining recesses in its wall, a large upper one 13 that guides the ring of the press into place, and a smaller lower one 14 that forms the lower half of the bottle ring.
The base section B is provided with the customary centrally located vertical opening 15 having its `upper portion 16 enlarged to conform to the shape and diameter of the lower end of the blank chamber 12; and in said opening 15 what is known as a push valve O has sliding movement. In the normal position of the said valve its upper portion is below the enlargement 16 of the opening 15 as is shown in Fig. 1 and in the upper or discharging position of the valve it extends up into the bottom portion of the blank chamber 12 as is shownin Fig, 2. This valve O is of peculiar construction in that it is provided with exterior longitudinal channels 17 that extend from its bottom up to a point near its upper end. `The channels 17 act as air ducts, and are adapted to establish communication between the outside atmosphere at the base of the mold and the blank chamber 12 when the said valve C is raised as is shown in Fig. v2; but when the valve C is in its lower or normal position such communication is shut off, as is shown in Fig. 1.
Vertical cuts or chambers 18 are madein the base section B of the mold, extending from its outer side surface to a communication with the central opening 15 in which the valve O slides; and said cuts or chambers 18 correspond in number and position to the number and position of the channels 17 in the said valve O. Any desired number of channels 17 `and corresponding chambers 18 may be employed. Ordinarily however four such, as illustrated in Fig. 2, have been found suicient. The chambers 18, which are for the purpose of establishing communication between the outside atmosphere and the central opening 15, divide the lower portion ofthe base into a number of solid sectorsections 19, as is shown in Fig. 3; and it maybe here remarked that the chambers 18 do not extend through the upper portion ofthe base section B but only about as high as the upper ends ofthe channels 17 in the valve C when said valve is in its lower or normal position, as shown in Fig. 1.
The two sections A and B of the mold are connected in a removable manner by producing vertical openings 2O in the sector portions or sections 19 et the base, which openings extend through the upper ace of the said base; but the said openings 20 are reduced in size at their upper portions as is shown in Fig. 1, so that the larger portions et the openings permit the ready up- Ward or downward passage of the head of a bolt D, one of which bolts is passed through each of the said openings 20, while the upper or reduced portions 21 of the openings are `iust sufficiently large to permit the ready passage of the body portions of the bolts. The threaded portions of the bolts pass up through suitably threaded openings in the bottom of the main or upper section A, as is shown in Fig. 1. Thus the two .sections can be quickly and securely connected and conveniently and expeditiously separated when desired.
The valve C isprovided with a horizontal opening 22 adjacent to its lower end opposite one of the chambers 18; and said opening 22 receives the reduced inner end 23 of a handle 24 that ispassed through the chamber 18 facing the opening 22 of the valve, and is ypivoted to offsets 25 from the outer tace of the said base section as is clearly illustrated. The handle 24 is provided with a convenient hand grip 26 at its outer end.
In the operation of the mold, after its sections have been secured together, the valve C remains in its lower position when the mold is to receive the molten material, and at such time the valve C shuts off all communication between the bottom of the blank chamber 12 and the outside atmosphere at the base of the mold. After the molten material has been poured and the plunger has descended-into the blank chamber 12 and has receded therefrom, the handle'24 is pressed downward, which raises the push valve C to carry up the partially shaped material from the bottom portieri of the blank chamber12, and at such time the channels 17 in the exterior' of the valve serve to establish communication between the chambers 18 and the blank chamber 12,
Vthus permitting any air that may be introduced into .said blank chamber to freely pass the length ot the same and [ind an exit to the outside atmosphere at the base.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
1. A blank mold provided with a ventilated base and a push valve having longitudinal air passages extending from a point near its inner end through its outer end and adapted to open communication between the ventilating portion et' the base and the blank chamber of the said mold and to cut oft such communication. and a handle carried by the base and connected with the said valve to elevate the same,
2. A blank mold provided with a ventilated base, a push valve having air passages therein adapted to open conimunication between the Ventilating portion ot' the base and the blank chamber of the mold, and to cutv oti such communication,and exteriorLv-lm'ated lneans t'or operating the valve.
3. A blank mold having openings at its base in communi-l cation with the outside atmosplnre, a push valve tor the, blank chamber of the mold. having exterior channels therein communicating with the openings in the base. which channels do 'not extend to the upper or ope1'ating t'in'e ot' the said valve. and means tor moving the said valve. whereby when the valve is raised communication is established between the outside atmosphere and the blank cham ber of the mold at its bottom. and wherein when the valve is lowered such communication is cut ott.
4. A blank mold constructed in sections, the base section being provided with chambers in communication with the outside atmosphere, a push valve having exterior passages in communication with the said chambers. the base section being likewise provided with openings between the said chambers, bolts passed through the said openings into the section abutting the base section. and means tor operating the said valve.
