Be it known that I, BENJAMIN W. MORGAN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of `Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Printing-Press, ofI which .the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of printing presses having a bed and a cylind'er coacting therewith. The object is to provide a novel presswherein theelements and combination of elements are extremely'simple and the necessary cycle of operationsis effectively produced4 and properly maintained, the .simplicity ofthe structure making the cost of manufacture ycomparativelychine. The result is that the clamping roller 61 will move downwardly into coaction with the cylinder, clamping the paper thereon, so that the rotation of said cylinder will cause the paper to be fed downwardly and properly to the forms of the bed. The downward movement of the arms 59 will cause a simultaneous movement on the part of the crank 58 of the gages, so
that the stop finger will be raised to permit the free passage of the paper therebeneath. It'will, of course, be understood that these movements are also properly timed with respect'to the operation loi the bed and cylinder'.
The delivery mechanism will now be described: Located beneath the feed table and above the path yoi movement of the bed 9 are sets of upper and lower endless tapes 66'and 67. The upper of these tapes, designated 66, pass around the cylinder 27 andare driven thereby, while they also run around a roller 68, located beneath the upperl end of the table. The lower tapes 67 of the sets pass about rollers 69 and 70, the rear roller 70 being disposed directly adjacent to the cylinder 27, and just in advance of the lower guide strips 51. This roller 70 has attached to it a pulley 71,
located-at one side of thc machine and in engagement with the driving belt 48 of the cylinder. Consequently, it will be apparent that these tapes all move synchronously with the cylinder at all times and without regard to the variableness oi the speed of its rotation'.
At 'one endof the frame and directly beneath the delivery portions of the tapes 66 and 67 is journaled a fly-frame that ordinarily maintains an upright position. This ily-frame consists of a rock shaft or bar 72, having the usual fingers 73, the upper ends oi which are located contiguous to the tapes 67. The rock bar 72 has a bracket 74, to which is pivoted the lower end of a link 75, the upper end of said link being pivotally connected to 'another link 76, swingingly suspended from its upper end and having attached to its lower end a spring 77, said spring being connected to the rock bar 72, through the medium of an ear 78, carried by said bar. A roller '79, journaled upon the suspended link 76, rides upon the peripheryroi a cam 80, .which cam is carried by the counter shaft 22 and is constructed so that, during the greater part ol' its rotation, the flyirame will be held in elevated position against. the tension of the spring 77; but, at a certain point in its travel, the roller 79 is permitted to move inwardly toward the shaft, thus allowing the spring 77 to operate and swing the ily-frame downwardly, as shown in Fig. 9. This movement is, oicourse, timed to the other mechanism, so that the operation of the ily-frame will take place just as a printedi sheet is delivered from the tapes.
Inking mechanism, operated in a peculiar manner by certain of the elements already described, is also employed. As shown, this inking mechanism com` prises spaced inking rolls 8l, over and in engagement with which is located a distributing roll o2. A lountain 83 of'any desired construction is provided with a l'eed roll 84, and a transmitting roll 85 operates between the feed roll 84 and the distributing roll 82. The said feed roll is -given a step by step movement, and lor this purpose, at one end of the same is secured a ratchet Wheel 86, engaged bya dog 87 carried by an oscillating llever 88. To the lever is connected a link 89, that is also pivotally connected to the link 37, already described. This link 37 has a longitudinal reciprocatory motion, and consequently the link 89 will be given a similar movement. The lever 87 is thus oscillated and the dog successively engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel 86, will move the same,` The transmitting roller 85 is journaled in arms 90, which are pivoted to the arms 59. As the arms59 have a swinging movement, it will be apparent that the transmitting roller will be moved from the feeding roll 84 to the distributing roll 82.

clamping roll 6l will be moved away from said cylinder while the gages will, as a consequence, drop into coaction therewith. Paper is thereupon fed beneath the clamping roll Glpand against the gages. As the bed moves to the opposite limit of its movement, `the clamping roll is depressed, the gages are elevated, and the paper is thereupon fed downwardly, so that it will be in proper position to pass beneath the cylinder as the form returns and said cylinder is depressed to printing position. As said cylinder takes the form, it will-also take the faster motion thereof, and the papervwill be delivered by the guides between the coacting stretches ofthe tapes 66 and 67. These tapes will deliver it over the iy, which, at the proper instant, is operated to remove the sheet from the machine. Simultaneously with the elevation and depression of the cylinder is the action of the iced roll of the inking fountain, and s imultaneously with the movement of the clamping roll- 6l is the movement ol' the transmitting roll 85 of ythe inking mechanism. lt will be apparent that the mechanism employed for securing this cycle of operations is comparatively simple and that said elements may be properly adjusted so that the proper iro-operation can at all times be secured.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and manyl advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description` and it will be uuderstood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details oi construction may be rcsorted to without departing from the spirit 'or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new anddcsire to secure by Letters Patent is:

'nection with the cam, and a device carried by the crank 'member and detachably engaging with the link during a portion -of the revolution of said crankKmember.
4. In a printingpress, the combination with a bed, of a cylinder` movable toward and from the bed, a cam for en'ecting the elevation of the cylinder, driving mechanism including a crank member, a reciprocatory link having a connection at one end with the cam and a device carried by the crank member and automatically moving into and out of engagement with the link to move the same on the movement of the crank member.
5. VIn a printing press, the combination with a bed, of a cylinder movable-` toward and from the bed, a cam for effecting the elevation of the'cylinder, driving mechanism including a rotary device having a /crank pin, and a link -having a pivotal connection with fthe cylinder elevating cam and furthermore, having an element disposed in the path of movement of the crank pin and automatically engaged thereby and disengaged thelefrom during the rotation of the device.-
6. ln a printing press, the combination with a bed, of a cylinder movable -toward and4 from the bed, means for moving the cylinder, driving mechanism including a rotatable crank member provided with an outstanding element, and a link having a connection with the cylinder moving means, said link being provided with an offset element that is automatically engaged by and disengaged from the element of the crank member during the rotation of said member.
7. In a printing press, the combination with a bed, of a. cylinder movable toward and from the bed, means for thus moving the cylinder, driving mechanism including a shaft having a crank member,- and a link connected to the cylinder moving means and having a head that surrounds the shaft and is slidable thereon, said head having a portion detachobi'y engaged by the crank member of the drivopposite directions.
9. In aaprinting press, the combination with a reciprocatory bed, of n cylinder mounted thereover and movable toward and fromv the bed, cam mechanism for elevating and lowering the cylinder, driving mechanism for reciprocating the bcd including,r a slmftdmving a crank element, saidcinnk element being provided with n crunk pin, und a link connected to the cum mechanism of the cylinder elevating means and having a head that surrounds theshai't of the .driving mechanism, said bend bcing provided on its inner side with spnccd abutmcnts engaged by the crunk pin.
10. In a printing press, the combination with a bed, of a cylinder movable toward Iuml from the bed, and means for thus moving the cylinder, said menus including a rotary crank members, and a device having connections with the cylinder, said device iavlng portions located in substantially diametrlcally opposite portions oi' ih c path of movement of the crunk member and detachably and successively engaged by ihe`snme during its rotation .to move said device in opposite tlirecilons,'said crunk ciement being disengaged lrom both elements during -porltions of its revolution to permit the raising of the cylina device having connections with the cylinder, said device having portions that embrace the shaft und carrying projections that are disposed in substantially diametrically opposite portions of the path of movement of thc crank member, said member detachably engaging the' projections during its rotationto move said device in opposite directions, and being detached therefrom during portions of its rotation to permit the independent raising and lowering of the cylinder.

In a printing press, the combination with u. movable bed, of a cylinder movable toward and from the bed, driv-- ing means for moving the bed, means for periodically elcvating the cylinder, said means including devices that automatically and periodically engage and discnguge upon the movement of the bed, and means for independently vclevating the cylinder when the devices are disengaged.
13. In a printing press, the combination with a bed, of a cylinder movable toward and from the bed, a roel; shaft having an eccentric connection with the cylinder, means for moving the bed, detachable connections between the said moving means and shaft for intermittently rocking the latter, and means connected to the shaft for independently operating the same when detached from said moving means.
14. In a printing press, the combination with a bed, ol. n cylinder movable toward and from the bed, a rock shaft havingan eccentric connection with the cylinder for moving the same toward and from the bed, driving means for moving the bed, devices connected respectively to the driving means and shaft for periodically moving the latter, one of said devices automatically engaging and disengnging from the other, and a foot treadle connected to the shaft for independently operating the same when the devices are disengaged.
15. In a printing press, the combination with a reciprocatory bed, of meaus for driving the same including a shaft, a cylinder coacting with the bed, n pulley loosely mounted on the shaft of the driving mechanism, a clutch connection between the pulley and shaft that permits the rotation of the pulley at a speed greater' than that of ille shaft and a belt connection between the clutch pulley und the cylinder.
16. In a printing press, the combination with a reciprocatory bed having a rack, of a stationary rack, geni-lng engaging the racks, driving mechanism for reciprocating the gearing, said driving mechanism including'a shaft, a rotutable cylinder mounted over the bed and movable toward and from the sume, a belt connection between the shaft und the cylinder, a crank member constituting a part of the driving mechanism. a rock shaft having cams, conucctions between thc cams and the cylinder, and a lilik connection between the rock shaft und the crunk member of the driving mechanism.

l-ii) driving mechanism including means for reciprocating the bed, a rotary cylinder coacting with the bed and moiable toward and from the same, means operated by the driving mechanism for continuously rotating the cylinder and etfecting its movement toward and from the bed, delivery tapes driven from the cylinder and the means for rotating `said cylinder, a fly frame receiving the paper from the tapes, means connecting the y frame and the driving mechanism, a paper clamping device, and gages movable into and out of coaction with the cylinder, conmon means connected with the driving mechanism for simultaneously operating the gages and clamping device in opposite directions, inking mechanism including a fountain feed i'oll, a`
distributing lroll, v and a transmitting roll operating between the feed` roll and distributing roll, and a connection between the transmitting roll and the clamping device.
21. In a printing press, the combination with a bed, of a cylinder movable into and out of coaction therewith, driving mechanism for operating the bed, and connections between the driving mechanism and cylinder for rotating the latter, said connections including a clutch comprising constantly associated elements connected respectively to the driving mechanism and cylinder, said elements having an automatic interlocking connection that at all times permits the element connected to the cylinder to operate at a greater speed than the element connected to the driving mechanism and automatically connects the elements whenever the speed of the driving mechanism exceeds that of the cylinder.

a cylinder movable into and out of coaction therewith, driving mechanism for operating lthe bed, and connections i between the driving mechanism and cylinder for rotating the latter, said connections including a clutch comprising relatively rotatableelements connected respectively to thc driving mechanism and cylinder, said elements having an interlocking connection that at all timespermits the element connected to the cylinder to rotate at a greater speed than the element connected to the driving mechanism, and at all times prevents the rotation of the element connected to the driving mechanism at a greater speed than the clement connected to the cylinder.
23. ln a printing press, the combination with a bed, of a cylinder movable into and out of coaction therewith. driving mechanism for operating the' bed, and connections between the driving mechanism and cylinder for rotating the latter, said connectionsl including a clutch comprising relatively rotatable elements ythat are connected respectively to -the driving mechanism and cylinder, and a device carried by one element and detachably interlocking with the other element, said device beingr automatically moved out of its interlockingY engagement by the clement that it engages, upon apredetermined change in the relativo speeds of the clutch elements.
24. ln a printing press, the combination with a bed, of a cylinder movable into and out of coaction therewith, driving ymechanism for operating the bed, and connections hctwocn thc driving mechanism and cylinder for rotating the latter, said connections including n clutch 'comprising relatively rotatable elements connected respectively to the driving Ymechanism and cylinder, ono oi' said elements having a recess provided with a sharp shoulder, und :in inclined shoulder, and a device carried by the other element and detnclmbly engaging in the recess, said device being moved out of the recess by thc inclined shoulder lhorcoif when the speed of the cylinder is grenier than that ot' the driving mechanism.

In a printing press, the combination with a cylinder, of a bed movable into and out of engagement with the cylinder, said cylinder being operated by the bed when the two are in engagement, driving mechanism, means for rotating the cylinder when the same is out of engage ment with the bed, sa'id means having a clutch connection with the driving mechanism, and coacting paper delivering tapes, one `of which is driven by the cylinder, the other being operated by `and having an engagement with said means for rotating the cylinder.

In a printing press, the combination with a bed, of a cylinder movable toward and from the same, meansy for thus moving the cylinder, said. means including a movable actuating element, a movable actuated clement having connections with the-cylinder and having a portion normally located in the path of movement of the actuating element, said elements being relatively movable to place said portion of the actuated element out of said path of movement of the actuating element, and means for yieldingly maintaining the elements with said portion in said path of movement.

In a printing press, the combination with a bed, of :i cylinder movable toward and from the same', means for thus moving theycylinder, said means including a rotating actuating element, a reciprocatory actuated clement having connections with the cylinder and having nY portion in the path of movement of the actuating element, said clements being relatively movable to place said portion out of the path of movement of the actuating element, and a spring for yielding-ly maintainingr thc elements with said portion in said path of movement.

In a printing press, the combination wltlra bed, of a cylinder movable toward and from the same, and means for thus moving the cylinder, said means including a rotatable shaft having a crank device, a reciprocatory link having a head slidable upon the shaft and movable toward the same, said head having devices disposed in the path of movement of the crank device, and a spring bearing against the head for yieldingly urging the same toward the crank device.
