CORSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907.
Application filed June l5, 19C6. Serial No. 321,799.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA MARION JORDAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oorsets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to corsets and particularly to extensible steels therefor, and has for its object 4to provide a simple, strong, and well-fitting construction of such steels. l
The invention Will be fully described hereinafter, and the features of novelty pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is afront view of two corset steels embodying my'invention; Fig. 2 is a rear View thereof with parts broken away; Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3-3 of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Two companion steels are provided for a corset, these steels differing from each other only by the nature of the fastening devices they carry; thus one of them may have studs a and the other eyes or keepers b so that they may be properly connected by hooking one into the other. Each of the steels comprises along upper section A, A and a relatively short lower section B, B, both provided with fastening devices a, b. The lower section is preferably stiffened lengthwise by forming it with a longitudinal groove c, c. The upper section -has a very flexible upper portion C, C', and a stiff lower portion formed into a guide or sheath by bending Vthe edges D, Df, toward each other. This construction suflcies to stiften the lower portion of the upper section.
v able material, is secured, at its upper end, to the upper portion C, C', on the same side on which the sheath is formed. The lower end of this strip, which is free, ex-
4tends over, and covers, the sheath of the corset steel.
them. As shown in the drawings, I prefer to arrange the edges D, D, and the covering strip E, E on that side of the steel which in use becomes the inner side, that is, the one nearest the wearers body,
The steels are incased in pockets, provided in the corsets fabric in the usual way, and by the construction above described, each steel will lengthen or shorten itself as the wearer moves, and the upper portions C, C/will bend readily while the lower portions of the upper sections and the lower sections will remain straight. The flaps or strips E, E will give the steels a smooth finish and protect the fabric as above set forth. v
Various modifications may be made without departing from the nature of my invention as defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. A corset steel comprising two sections provided with fastening devices for connection with a` colnpanion steel, one of said sections having its edges bent toward each other for a portion of its length to form a stilfened sheath for the other section, the latter being stilened against lengthwise bending.
2. A corset steel comprising two sections provided with fastening devices for connection with a companion steel, one of said sections having a flat liexible upper portion and a stiff lower portion with edges turned toward cach other to form a sheath for receiving the other section, and a flexible covering strip secured to the said flexible portion and extending over the said sheath.
A corset steel comprising two sections provided with fastening devices for connection with a companion steel, one of said sections having a flexible portion and a sheath for the other section, and a flexible covering strip secured` to said ilexible portion and extending over the sheath.
4. A corset steel comprising two sections provided on one face with fastening devices for connection with a companion steel, one of said sections having a flexible portion and edges bent toward each other on the face opposite to that on which the fastening devices are disposed, the other section being mounted to slide in said sheath, and a flexible coveringr strip secured to the fiexible portion on the same side from which the bent edges project, and extending over said edges.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name u the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMMA MARION JORDAN.
