CUFF-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 24, 1906. Serial No. 318,578.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOGAN L. MALLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is'to provide an improved cuff holder the construction of which will afford economies in the manufacture of the device and will produce an article of this character which will be of comparativelyfew and simple parts that are durable in construction and efficient in operation to hold a cuff securely at the proper length with respect to the coat sleeve, and the invention comprises particularly, in addition to the details of construction relating to the manufacture of the device an improved cuff member which will securely hold the cuff in place without injury to the fabric, and which may be readily applied to and detached from the cuff, and a spring clip sleeve member designed to be attached to the shirt sleeve in a secure manner without injuring the fabric thereof as articles of this character often do.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

may be stamped out of blank form illustrated in Fig. 5 and perforated as required in one.
and the same operation and subsequently die curled or bent to the proper contour. When so bent, it is formed with an overhanging edge 1 from the opposite sides of which the apertured ears 4 project, and the side edges of the plate are so formed at one end, as to produce two meeting flanges 5 adapted to encircle the tapered head 6 of the rod-like shaft 7 of a connecting member 3. In connection with the said plate, just described, the cufi member embodies a pair of wings 8 which may be suitably stamped out of sheet metal and each wing is provided with apertured ears 9 designed to receive a pintle 10 inserted therethrough and through the ears 4. Each wing 8 is provided at its hinged edge with lugs 11 designed to contact with a spring plate 12, which may be substantially of the same marginal outline as the plate to which the wings are hinged, said spring plate being preferably held by means of the curled over edges 1. As illustrated in Fig. 8,this spring plate may be of the form' designated 12"*. Each wing 8 is provided at its free end with a rough surface; the said surface may be a serrated portion as shown in Fig. 2 and the purpose of this roughened surface as is manifest, is to produce a frictional or biting surface to engage the fabric of the cuff.
'As shown in Fig. 10, it is within the purview of my invention to construct each wing designated 8 .with curled or knuckle-like ears 9 and with short spurs 13 to bite into the cuff.
The sleeve engagingmember 2 of the cuff holder, as illustrated best in Figs. 1 and 15, is composed of a spring clip comprising two members 14, preferably of sheet metal provided at opposite sides with apertured ears 15 to receive the pintle end 16 of the shank 7 of the connectingmember 3. This said pintle end 16 of the said shank may be provided with a shoulder 17 against which one pair of these ears will abut, while the extreme end of said pintleend may be formed into a rivet to retain the two members 14 in proper pivoted position on the connecting member 3. Each of the clip members 14 is further provided at one end with spaced apart fingers 18 preferably curved in a longitudinal direction and corrugated or curved transversely as illustrated in the drawings, the corrugations 19 preferably extending beyond the fingers on to the body portion of the said members 14. A spring 20 is provided to move the pivoted members 14 so that their fingers 18 will grip the sleeve and the said spring may be a helical spring coiled aroundthe pintle on which the members 14 are pivoted. Preferably each clip member 14 is provided at its rear end and on its outer surface with a rough or serrated portion 21 providing a convenient finger hold. Preferably also the curved or bowed fingers 18 of the clip members 14 alternate with each other or are, in other words, arranged in staggered relation so that they will securely clamp the fabric inserted between themv in a corrugated manner which will securely grip the fabric without injuring the latter.
As illustrated in Figs. 12 and 13, the wings supporting the plate 1 of the cuff member may be extended at one end as at 1 the side edges of the said extension being curled as at 1 to strengthen the extension, and the extreme end of the said extension being provided with flanges 5" encircling the section 6 of the comparatively short member 3 In this modification, the sleeve engaging device i? designated 2 and the clip member there- 0 14*.
In the practical application of my improved cuff holder, the wings 8 of the cuff member 1 are both swung perpendicular to the plate which carries them, back to back, as illustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawing, being retained in such position by the spring action of the spring plate 12 or the plate 12 as the case may be. The said two wings are inserted through the button hole of either or both tabs of the cuff and are then swung downwardly away from each other, which action will securely grip the cuff, both by the direct contact between the free ends of the wings and the fabric of the cufl and. by reason of the fact that the said wings extend outwardly on opposite sides of the button hole. The said wings will be retained in this oporative position by the spring engagement of the lugs 11 with the spring plate above mentioned.
From the foregoing description it is cvident that the wings need not pierce the fabric of the cuff to insure the proper retention of the latter, and therefore they will not injure the fabric as devices of this character often do.
It is obvious that the cuff may be secured on the wearers wrist at the proper position with reference to the coat sleeve by the spring clip constituted by the members 14 with their fingers 18 which are spaced apart as above described and alternate withv each other so as to securely hold the fabric of the shirt sleeve between them in a corrugated outline, thereby securely holding the fabric as against the lengthwise )ull and strain to which the cuffs will be su jected and with out" injuriously affecting the fabric of the sleeve.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A cufl holder, comprising a plate having overhanging marginal edges and formed at opposite points in said edges with apertured ears, and also formed at one end with curled. over flanges, two transversely extending wings pivoted to said ears, said wings being provided at their pivoted edges with lugs, a spring plate mounted within the first named plate between the bottom of the latter and the said wings and retained in said. first named plate by the said overhanging edges, a sleeve engaging member, and a rod-like connecting member secured. at one end to the sleeve engaging member and provided. at its other end with a tapered head received. in and held by the said curled over flanges.
