provided a pair of beveled gears which transmit the movement thereof to the horizontal shaft 8 which has a spur gear 9 secured thereto and which meshes with a fixed circular rack 10. The outer end of the shaft 8 is held in suitable bearings secured. to the carriage and also has the driving roll a secured there to. The driving mechanism is so designed that the carriage will be revolved over the circular tank at thesame speed as that of the paper which is unrolled as described and consequently there will be no relative horizontal movement between the sizing and the paper at the point under the roll 5 where they are brought into contact. This roll 5 is mounted upon a hand lever 11 by means of which the paper can be brought into position. so as to come into contact with and take up the colors which have been deposited upon the surface of the sizing by the dist] 'buting brushes. From this point the paper passes under a pressure roll 12 having a fixed scraper 12, which is designated as a doctor, over a scraper roll 13 and under a pressure roll 13, as shown in Figs. 3 and at. These two latter rolls operate to remove any surlus gum or sizing solution from the paper. rom these rolls the paper passes under a guide roll 14 and under a preliminary drying chamber 56 which is heated by gas lrom pipe57, over the drum 15 which is h ated, to the drying chamber 16, which is heard by means of a series of gas 17, or other suitable means, and from which it passes over the drum 18, which is also heated, and guide rolls 19, and '21 to the roll 22 upon which it is rewound. The rewinding roll 22-- is driven by means of a belt 23 from a pulley mounted upon the end of the driving shaft 8. A tension roller 2%, which 'is regulated by means of a strap 25 and weights 26, controls the rotation of the rewinding roll.
The purpose of the pressure roll 12, the
doctor 12', the scraper roll 13 and the pressure roll 13 shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is to remove any oi the sizing solution which may have beenpickcd up by the paper in passing under the. roll 5 without disturbing the colors which are take-if up by the paper at this point. A pivoted bracket 27 carries the scraper or doctor 12 which takes any excess gum l'rom the upper surf-ace of the paper and also carries a pressure roll 12 which rests 'upon the-upper surface of the paper and brings the under surface into contact with the scraper roll 13 which is mounted upon a fixed support. This is designated as a scraper roll on account of its construction, shown more clearly in Fig. 4. This roll 13 traeling al a somewhat greater speed than the paper removes the surplus gum from the surface as described. A scraper 28 is provided which in turn scrapes the gum solution from the roll and allows it to drip into pan 29, from which it flows through a trough 30 to a circular receptacle 31. From this receptacle it is drawn on by means of a pipe 32.
, An overhead tank may be provided in any suitable location into whichthe surplus gum collected from the pipe 32 may be pum ed by any suitable pumping device. A eed pipe may be provided. leading from this tank to supply the gum solution to the large circular tank. Such a pipe is shown at 33 in Fig; 2 having branches therefrom passing underneath the aforesaid large circular tank and provided with inlet valves to control the flow of the gum solution to one or more points in the said circular tank. These pipes are shown at 34, 35 and 36 in Fig. 3, and the controlling valves 37 and 38 are likewise shown in Fig. 3. The arrangement of these various supply pipes and valves 1s also shown in Fig. 1 and 2.
The revolving carriage is moved around above the circular tank by means of the driving gear 9 and circular rack 1.0, as has been described. The carriageis supported on the outside by means of a roller 39 resting upon-a circular track 40. a sprocket wheel mounted upon the driving shaft 8, as shown in Fig. This chain also drives the scraping roll 13 and the drum "15, as shown in Fig. 3. The size of these sprockets is so arranged that the circumference of the several rolls driven thereby will move at' the same speed as the paper which is passing over the same, except the scraping roll '13 which rotates slightly faster than the paper web passing over the same in order to remove the adhering gum, as described above.
One of the important features of myinvention is in the construction and arrangement of the distributing brush and roll,
which is shown in detail in Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9. The brush is composed of a central spindle mounted upon a shaft 43 having a gear 44 attached to one end thereof. This gear is driven through an idle gear 45, mounted upon a suitable bearing secured. to the brush carriage l6, and which in turn is driven from the circular rack 10 as the brush carriage is moved ahead in the direction indicated" by the arrow at the lower part of Fig. 6. This will rotate the brush in the direction indicatedby the arrow over the same in Figs. 7 and 8.
The distributing roll 4:7 is mounted upon a shaft- 48, supported 'in suitable hearings on the carriage -16. A driving gear 49, secured to the end of the shaft 48, meshes with and is driven with the idle gear 45 in the direction indicated by the arrow in Figs. 7 and 8.

The construction as shown and described of the distributing roll and brush presents several features which have been found in practice to give the best results. In a marbling machine, the combina tion of a tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a rotating brush, a supply roll operating in conjunction with said brush to distribute coloring matter over the surface of said sizing solution, and means for passing the paper successively into i-ontact with the junction with said brushes to distribute coloring matter over the surface of said sizing solution, and means for passing the pa er successively into contact with the color carried by said sizing solution, substantially as described.
