MACHINE FOR WASHING SHEETS PAPER.

This invention has reference'to machines for washing blue prints in continuous rolls and cut sheets and the like, the object being to produce a machine which is easy to manipulate, simple in construction, and inexpensive to manufacture, and in which the print or the like is expeditiously Washed or developed.
According to this invention I mount, in suitable bearings supported by the frame of the machine, a perforated cylinder or drum capable of being revolved in a washing tank. Also supported by the frame of the machine are a number of water or air sprays, such sprays being positioned at intervals around the periphery of the perforated drum so as to impinge upon the surface of the paper or the like as it passes through the machine while being washed.
The paper is drawn into the machine either by passing under revolving pressure bands, roller or rollers suitably positioned on the machine, or by the pressure exerted upon it by one or more of the sprays, or by a combination of both, and as the cylinder continues to revolve in the bath the paper is maintained in contact with the periphery of said cylinder by the pressure of the various sprays until said paperreaches the point where it is taken off the machine.
In order to enable the paper to be taken out of the machine I position in the interior of the perforated cylinder at the point of discharge one or more sprays which force the paper from the drum surface.
If the machine is charged from the upper side I may employ a revolving pressure band or hands on the underside of the drum to assist the paper in maintaining contact with the drum surface. These bands may be made adjustable by lowering or raising the rollers so that they can be brought out of action when the material being washed is in continuous lengths.
If desired I may employ, in place of the perforated drum or cylinder, a travelling band or bands either plain or perforated, and sprays for maintaining the paper in contact with the surface of such bands as it travels through the machine, a spray or sprays being employed to remove the paper from contact with said bands as it passes from the machine.
To prevent water forcing the paper off the underside of the drum or perforated band, I may employ an internal screen or 26,223, and in Great Britain May 10, 1924.
trough or an internal scraper to discharge water collecting on the inner surface of the drum prior to reaching the lowest point in the tank or bat-h.
The invention is illustrated on the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 illustrates a machine in which the paper enters at the top of the cylinder or drum.
Fig. 2 is a side view showing a diagram of a modified support for the sheets of paper.
A represents the perforateddrum or cylinder which is mounted in bearings supported by the frame B, D the sprays positioned at intervals around the periphery of the drum, E the sprays positioned in the interior of the drum, F the revolving pressure hands by which the paper is drawninto the machine, H the revolving pressure bands which assist the paper in maintaining contact with the underside of said drum as it revolves in the tank J, and K the take-oft bands.
As shown by the arrow a the paper enters the machine at the top, being drawn onto the drum A by the revolving pressure bands F, but it must be clearly understood that the paper may enter the machine at any other suitable point, and that it may. be drawn into the machine by the pressure exerted upon it by one or more of the sprays.
The paper, as it passes onto the drum A, is maintained in contact with the periphery of said drum by the pressure of the various sprays D, the revolving pressure bands H assisting in maintaining such contact with the underside as the drum continues to re volve in the washing tank J.
Now in order to remove the paper from the periphery of the drum A on to the takeoff bands K after it has passed through the bath J, I position at this point, in the interior of the drum, one or more sprays E which force the paper on to said bands K, as clearly shown on the drawing.
When using water sprays, water is supplied .to the sprays from a pump (not shown) through pipe a, and after impinging upon the surface of the paper, such water falls into the tank J, passing back to said pump through the outlet j provided in the bottom of said tank. An overflow or outfall j is also provided in said tank so as to maintain a constant water level in the tank, as shown at 9' If desired I may employ, in place of the perforated drum or cylinder A, travelling bands suitably arranged to carry the paper through the washing tank J, the sprays D maintaining the paper in contact with the surface of such bands as it travels through the machine, and the spray or sprays E removing it from contact with said bands at the point Where it issues on to the take-oti' bands, as shown diagrammatically, Fig. 2.
iVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a machine for washing sheets of paper, a washing tank, an endless travelling support for the paper projecting into the tank, a. series of stationary spray devices arranged outside the said support and operating; to hold the paper against it, and a stationary spray device arranged inside the support and operating to remove the paper from it at a predetermined point of its travel.
2. In combination with a machine as set forth in claim 1, travelling discharge or take-off mechanism for receiving the paper when removed by the spray device from the said support.
3. In combination with a machine as set forth in claim 1, endless travelling pressure bands arranged around the said support and operating to assist the spray devices in holding the paper in place.
l. In a machine for washing paper, a washing tank, a rotary perforated cylindrical support for the paper projecting into the tank, a series of stationary spray devices arranged outside the said support and operating to hold. the paper against it, and a stationary spray device arranged inside the support and operating to remove the paper from it at a predetermined point of its travel.
