SAMUEL LEWIS, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
BUTTONHOLE-OUTTING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed July 2,1906. Serial No. 324,520.
To a whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttonhole-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for cutting buttonholes in fabrics and has for its object the provision of a machine adapted to be secured to an ordinary work table, and operated by foot power.
The construction and advantages of my invention will be explained in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side view of my invention, and Fig. 2, an end view of the cutting jaws.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout both views.
A indicates the base aw of my improved machine adapted to be secured to a table or any other suitable support by means of screw clamp B. The upper surface of base jaw A is provided with a longitudinal groove C in which is mounted cutting block D having secured at one end a rod. E bent so as to extend through hole F in one of the ears G, H being a set screw to engage said rod E to hold the block D in any desired position. I indicates the other and movable aw of my improved machine which is pivotally secured between ears G and has an arm J formed integral therewith with a weighted end K having a socket 7c therein.
L indicates a treadle suitably secured and having a socket Z in one end.
M indicates a rod connecting sockets 7c and Z being loosely mounted therein.
N indicates a tubular punch removably secured in hole C in jaw I and P a cutting blade removably secured in a slot in the jaw, said punch and blade being positioned above the cutting block D.
The operation of my invention will be apparent from an inspection of the drawings it being understood that the weighted end K of arm J lifts the movable jaw I when pressure is released from the treadle L so that the operator has both hands free to hold the fabric being operated upon.
The length of the buttonhole is regulated by adjusting the block D by means of rod E and Set screw H the length of block D eX- posed to cutting blade P determining the length of the buttonhole slit.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. In a buttonhole cutting machine, a base jaw having upwardly projecting ears, one of said ears having a hole therethrough, a block adjustably mounted on said base jaw, a rod secured to said block and slidably mounted in the hole aforesaid, a jaw pivotally mounted between said ears having a weighted arm integral therewith, a treadle suitably secured, and a rod connecting said arm and treadle, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a buttonhole cutting machine, a base jaw having upwardly projecting ears, one of said ears having a hole therethrough, a block slidably mounted on said base jaw, a rod se cured to said block and slidable in the hole in said ear, a set screw to engage said rod, a aw pivotally mounted between said ears, an arm extending from said pivoted jaw having a weighted end with a socket therein, a treadle having a socket and suitably secured, a rod having its ends resting in said sockets, and a tubular punch and blade secured in said pivoted jaw and positioned'above said block, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL LEWIS.
