I-IENRY C. ALLEN, OF NORTHFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO MARY E. ALLEN, OF N ORTHFORD, CONNECTICUT.
COIVIVIUNION OR EUCHARISTIC DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed August 10, 1906. Serial No. 330,074.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Communion or Eucharistic Devices, of which the followinO' is a specification.
n divine worship and in the eucharistie service, many communicants partake of wine. This practice has been prolific of spreading disease, hence recourse has been had to individual devices, among which may be classed comparatively small receptacles preferably of glass and approximating the ordinary tumbler or drinking glass in form for containing the potion of wine allotted to each communicant.
The purpose of the present invention is to devise means for quickly, conveniently and simultaneously filling a number of individual glasses or receptacles and for receiving the latter and enabling the same to be distributed among the communicants.
In accordance with the present invention, the eucharistie device comprises a carrier embodying one or more trays having openings to receive a number of receptacles or glasses, a reservoir for containing a quantity of wine and valved distributing pipes or tubes for delivering vpotions of the wine to the receptacles.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
While the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a eucharistieJ apparatus or device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
The device comprises a carrier, a reservoir or font, a tray, glasses or receptacles and valved distributing tubes or pipes.
The carrier consists of a bottom plate or support 1 provided with feet 2 to support the device when placed on a table or stand, a
center ost 3 and a series of rims 4 projected upward) from the bottom 1 and adapted to receive a corresponding number of trays 5, each provided with a series of openings to receive the receptacles or glasses 6 adapted to contain the potion for each communicant. The glasses or receptacles 6 are comparatively small and may be of any desired formation according to the generalk finish, design and embellishment of the device as a whole.
A reservoir or font 7 is centrally disposed and located above the post 3 and may be of any capacity, outline and ornamentation. Portions of the reservoir are up-turned at diametrically opposite points, as shown at 8, to provide ears for receiving a pin or other fastening 9 upon which is mounted a handle 10 for convenience of carrying the device. Pipes 11 branch from the lower portion of the reservoir and connect at their outer ends with heads 12 from ywhich distributing pipes or tubes 13 extend, one being provided for each receptacle or glass. A valve 14 controls the outflow from each head 12 and when open permits liquid to flow through the distributing pipes or tubes 13 and when closed shuts off the supply to said distributing pipes and tubes. The reservoir or-font 7 is provided at its bottom with a well 17 with which the pipes 11 con-\ nect, said well having a stem 15 which makes detachable connection with the post or stem 3 of the carrier. An ornamental band 16 connects the series of distributing pipes or tubes 13 to hold them in fixed relation as 'well as to add to the appearance of the apparatus. A head 12 and pipe 11 is provided for each tray and each head 12 is supplied with a cluster of distributing tubes or pipes 13 corresponding in number with the number of glasses or receptacles provided for each tray so as to fill the series at one time. As shown, each tray is provided 'with eight openings and a corresponding number of glasses or receptacles, hence each head 12 is supplied with a corresponding number or eight of distributing pipes or tubes.
The reservoir or font, including the distributing pipes or tubes, is made detachable from the carrier to admit of supplying the latter with a handle for convenience of carrying the same vwhen it may be required to distribute the glasses or receptacles or to collect the same without necessip be cut off.
tating the handling of the reservoir and adjunctive parts. When a tray is Jfilled with the glasses or receptacles, the latter may be simultaneously supplied with a potion of 'wine by manipulating the valve 14, Upon opening the valve, the precious liquid will iiow through the tubes 13 into the receptacle 6 and upon closing the valve, the supply 'will This arrangement admits of a series of' receptacles being iilled while the other series are being distributed and collected, thereby saving time and enabling a comparatively small number of receptacles to be lled. It is to be understood that the number of receptacles for each tray may be varied. i
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: t
l. In a eucharistic device, the combination of a carrier, trays removablyfitted upon the carrier, each tray being provided with a series of receptacles, a reservoir connected with the carrier, pipes in communication with the reservoir and radiating therefrom, valved heads at the outer ends of said pipes, and tubes extended from the respective heads, one for each receptacle of a tray, there being one pipe, one valved head and a plurality of tubes for each tray.
2. In a eucharistic device, the combination of a carrier, trays removably fitted upon the carrier, each tray being provided with a series of receptacles, a centrally disposed reservoir detachably connected with the carrier, a pipe Jfor each tray extended Jfrom the reservoir, a valved head at. the outer end of each pipe and a series oi tubes radiating from each head, one for each receptacle of the tray,
3. In a eucharistic device, the combination of a carrier, a series of trays removably fitted upon the carrier, each tray being provided with a plurality of receptacles a centrally disposed reservoir connected with the carrier, pipes extended outward from the reservoir, one for each tray, valved heads at the outer ends of the pipes, a series of tubes radiating from each valved head, one for each receptacle of a tray and a band connecting the tubes of each series as well as the series of tubes themselves.
4. In a eucharistic device, the combination of a carrier provided with acentrally disposed post, and a series of rims grouped about said post, trays removably iitted to the rinis and having openings to receive a plurality of receptacles, a reservoir having a stem to make detachable connection with the aforementioned post and likewise provided with a handle, pipes radiating from the reservoir, valvedheads at the outer end ofthe pipes, a series of distributing tubes radiating from the'respective valved heads, and a band connecting the tubes of each series, as well as the several series of tubes.
5. The herein described eucharistic device comprising a carrier provided with a centrally disposed post, and a series of rims grouped about the post, trays removably iitted to the rims and provided with openings to receive receptacles, a reservoir having a depressed portion from which projects a stem to make detachable connection with the aforementioned post and support the reservoir, the latter having upwardly extended portions at opposite sides, a handle attached at its ends to Said upwardly extended portions of the reservoir, pipes radiating from the depressed portion of the reservoir, valved heads at the outer ends of said pipes, distributing tubes radiating from the respective valved heads and a band connecting the tubes of each series as well as the series of tubes.
In testimony whereoi1 I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY C. ALLEN.
