To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. 110- DECKER, a citizen of the United States-residing at New York, in the county of New York.
and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Window-Screen, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to windowscreens, and more particularly to'that class in which the screen iscombined with the upper and lower window sashes, whereby when the lower sash is raised and the upper sash lowered, the screens will be'brought to oper'ative position, and when the reverse movements of the sashes are effected, the screens will be hidden from view.
The objects of the present invention are to improve the manner of combining the screen carrying rollers with the,window frame, to reinforce the screens against being blown inward by wind pressure, and at the same time to hold them tightly against the lower rail of the bottom sash and the top rail of the upper sash, thereby positively to preclude the en. trance of insects from without.
With the above and other ob'ects in view as will appear as the nature oft e invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a window screen, as will be hereinafter fully described and claiined.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a view in perspective, partly broken away, exhibiting the window frame and the sashes thereof equipped the screens of the present invention. Fig. 2

so that when the sash locking mechanism, presently to be described, is released the lower sash'will raise and the upper sash will drop, and thereby effect the exposure of the As is usual, the lower sash is heavier than the upper sash and for this reason the weights 4 are of greater weight than the weights 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
It is one of the features of the present invention to combine the screen mechanism with the window casing without necessitating any extended change in its structural arrangement. This is accomplished byggconstructing the roller casings in such manner as they may readily be positioned relatively to the casing without the necessity of employing fastening devices for the purpose,and by the provision of suitable guides attached to the window casing in lieu of the ordinary guide sticks, which not only perform't'he function of causing the sashes to move properly within thecasing, but also to check any tendency on the part of the screen to blow inward, or to sag away from the sashes and thus permit insects to enter.
The screen roller casings 8 and 9 are dis posed at the upper and lower portions of the window casing as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Each casing, as shown in detail in Fig. A, is a hollow rectangular structure made preferably of wood, and has secured adj acent to its terminals-brackets 10 (one only being I shown) that serve as bearings for the screen roller 11 which may be of the usual or any preferred. construction and differs from the ordinary window shade roller in the fact that there is no stop mechanism Secured to the inner opposed faces of the stiles of the window casing are facing strips 12 to which are attached metallic giudes 13, that are, as shown in Fig. 3, L-shapecl in cross section, and have their upper and lower terminals bent at right angles to their length to form flanges 14 and 15, the guides being" secured to the facing strips by screws employed to ar-- rest the rotation of the roller.
