Description

PATENTED JUNE 25. 1907.
L. G. W OLLEY. DEVICE FOR PERMITTING THE AUTOMATIC OPERATION OF FIRE ALARM BOXES.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.31.1906."
V iq- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. LEONIDAS c. WOOLLEY, or LIMA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN c. RILEY, OF LIMA, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR PERMITTING THE AUTOMATIC OPERATION OF FIRE-ALARM BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed August 31,1906. Serial No. 332,797.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of bio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Permitting the Automatic Operation of Fire-Alarm Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and improved attachment for manually operative fire alarm sending boxes whereby the alarm will be operated automatically upon the occurrence of fire.
T e invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed, the invention not being confined to precisely the details shown.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is an end elevation partially in section of an alarm sending box showing my attachment in place; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation looking at the left hand side of the box as it appears in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view of the upper edge of the attachment removed as it appears in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a view looking at the lower side of the attachment as it appears in Fig. 1.
In the views 5 designates a signal generating shaft and 6 an ordinary crank secured thereon for operating it manually when desired. The signal generating shaft and the signaling apparatus operated thereby are mounted in a suitable box or casing 5. Connected to the shaft and the casing or a fixed part thereon is a spring 7 adapted to yieldingly hold the shaft in a given position and tending to return the shaft to such position when turned out of it. inclosed in a suitable casing 8 on the end of the sending box as shown.
On the face of the box is secured a stationary horizontally projecting post or pin 9. The crank 6 and the pin 9 are provided with small sockets 6 and 9.
The attachment as shown comprises princi pally two bar-like members 10 and 11 hinged together. The member 10 comprises a head portion 10 and a thin leg 10 while the member 11 consists of a substantially I, LEONIDAS G. WooL- l ment in place.
The spring 7 can bestraight bar with a slit 11 in its end. The head portion 10 of the member 10 fits in the slit 11 of the member 11 and the two members are hinged together by a pin 12 passed through the head portion 10 and the slit end of the member 11 so as to permit the parts to move at a wide angle with reference to each other. The hinged members 10 and 11 are furnished at their ends with longitudinally extending pins 10 and 11 adapted togengage the sockets 6 and 9 respectively.
In practice the leg 10 is soldered to the member 11 in substantial alinement or parallelism by means of a solder 13 fusible on a dangerous rise of temperature and the pins 10 and 11 engage with the sockets 6 and 9 while the crank is under tension of the s ring 7, with the tendency, in the instance shown in Fig. l, to throw the crank toward the left. This tension assists in retaining the attach- Upon the occurrence of fire the solder melts thus liberating the members of the attachment and permitting it to bend at the hinge and fall away. This bending of the attachment releases the crank and per mits the shaft to rotate by the action of the spring 7, thus sending the desired signal operating impulse.
What I claim ters Patent is:
1. In combination with automatically movable means for effecting a signal, a device for holding said movable means in position to operate upon a dangerous rise of temperature comprising two members hinged together and overlapping each other, and a fusible material between the lapping portions of said members to secure said members substantially in alinement or parallel to each other, substantially as described.
In combination with automatically movable means for effecting a signal, a device for holding said movable means in position to operate upon a dangerous rise of temperature comprising two members hinged together and secured fixedly with reference to each other by a material fusible on a dangerous rise of temperature.
3. In combination with a signal box having automatically movable means for effecting a signal, a device for holding said movable means in position to operate upon a dangerous rise of temperature comprising and desire to secure by Letto engage the crank and a fixed point on the 20 signal box.
5. In combination with a magnetoelec trical signal device having automatically movable means for eflecting a signal, said means including a crank, a device for holding 25 said crank in position to operate automatically upon a dangerous rise of temperature comprising a twoart device unattached to said crank, the parts of said device held together by a fusible material and said device 30 adapted to engage said crank and a fixed point away from said crank.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
' LEONIDAS G. WVOOLLEY.
IVitnesses:
T. R. IIAMILTON, LEORA M. STEWART.
tWo bar-like members hinged together, a material fusible on a dangerous rise of temperature to secure said members substantially in alinement or parallel to each other, said members being adapted to engage the said automatically movable means and a fixed point on the box to hold the movable means in position until released by a dangerous rise of temperature.
4. In combination With a signal box having a signal sending shaft, with a crank fixed thereon, means for automatically rotating said shaft and crank, a device for holding said crank in position to automatically operate upon a dangerous rise of temperature comprising tWo members hinged together,
and means fusible on a dangerous rise of temperature to hold said members in fixed relation to each other, said device being adapted
