The switch blades are supported in carriers of the same general type as is =fully shown and described in my Patent 1,248,415, November 22, 1917, and in my pending application Serial No; 175,192. This is connected with a push rod 32 w i'ch extends into the casing and which is slidably mounted to move back and forth in a plane between the carriers. A suitable guidebearing, a 33, is formed through the top wall of the casing, while a second guidebearing 8 1 is formed through a flange 35 provided upon theadjacent supporting bracket 20.
The slide rod 32 is longitudinallyslotted as at 36 to receive the pivot pin'26 of the hment offmain and r togglaand the lower end of the -rod is formed with a shoulder, as 37', for engaging beneath the under surface of the flange 35 to limit the upward movement of the rod.

The lower end wall, as 39, of the slot 36,
is in such relation to the shoulder 37that, when the toggle stands made, an upward movement of'the slide rod sufficient to bring the shoulder 37 against the flange 35 will just'raise the surface 39 suflicient to lift the pivot 26 above a straight line between the piyots'27 and 29 to thereby enable the spri gs 22 to snap the toggle to its full off position.

This insulating material, and is disposed as a partition dividine the interior of the casing 'into an upper and lower compartment. The upper compartment, is adapted tocontein the fuses. a's' 40c in aposition of,ready acces- 'sibility when the" door 5is open, while the lower compartment is shielded by'the barrier and is adapted to contain the switch blades and the contacts 9 and 10 so that these live-parts especially the main line contacts, may not be readily accessible when the door is open. The fuses 40 are spaced apart side by side along the'length of the barrier A and each is preferably supportcd in a pair of clips 41. One of these clips is connected with one of the switch blades H by a suitable flexible connechon as 42, while the other clip is similarly connected with the op barrier consists (if a plate or wallofsuitable posite switch blade H by a suitable flexible connection, as 43.
Similar connections are provided between each fuse, and its respective pair of switch blades.
Each fuse is thus disposed between a pair of switch blades and it is, therefore, immaterial which of said switch blades is associated with the main line contact. The main line conductors may, therefore, be connected with either of said sets of contacts 9 or 10 with equal correctness. There is thus no likelihood of a careless operator connecting the main line conductors with the wrong terminal pieces as has often happened in connec tion with switches which have heretofore been used.
The interlock between the switch operating mechanism and the door includes a bracket 44 which is fixed to the inner surface of the door and which carries a pin 45 disposed to engage within an arouate slot 46 formed int-he link 25 of the toggle. The slot 46 is made so that when the toggle is in its broken position the slot is concentric with the pivot or hinge 6 of the door to thus permit the pin 45 to travel freely along the slot as the door is opened or closed. When ever the toggle is moved out of its broken position, however, the position of the slot is, of course, so altered as to prevent movement of the pin 45 along the slot and to thereby retain the door closed. The inner end of the slot is slightly enlarged, as at 47, so as to permit unobstructed movement of the link 25 when the door is closed. This enlargement provides a surface or shoulder 48 in such position that when the toggle is made, as shown in Fig. 4, said shoulder stands directly in the path of movement of the pin 45.and thus constitutes a positive barrier to any opening movement of the door so long as the switch remains on.
Further, when the switch is off and the door is open, as also shown in Fig. 4, the slot provides a surface, as 49, which engages the pin 45 to positively prevent the making of the toggle until the door has been closed and the pin 45 removed from the surface 49 to the lower end portion of the slot. It is noted, in this connection, that the surface 49 stands in such relation to the pivots 6 and 29 that any pressure from the operating handle tending to swing the toggle link 25 down toward the dotted line position in Fig. 4, will result in a direct and positive push of the pin 45 away from the pivot 6 without imparting any tendency to close the door.
The operation of the device is believed to be entirely clear from the above description. Downward pressure upon the operating handle 31 moves the toggle into made posi tion with both of the blades pressing against the respective contacts 9 and 10, as clearly shown by the dotted lines in Fig. l. The
movement of the toggle into made position may be limited by any suitable means, but is preferably limited by engagement with the upper surface of the flange .35 of the support 20. In this position the pivot 26 is slightly below the plane of a strai ht line extending between the pivots 27 an 29 so that the toggle will remain made, or locked, and the operating handle will re main down as long as desired. To break the toggle the operating handle is simply withdrawn so that the-end wall 39 of the slot 36 engages the pivot 26 and moves the pivot 26 above center so that the springs 22, augmented by the power of the switch blades and the contacts as above referred to, will snap the toggle fully-off.
The barrier A is preferably connected to the flanges 35 of the supporting brackets 20 by means of suitable screws or bolts 51 which may be removed with a proper instrument. These screws may engage threaded apertures, as52. formed in the flanges.- By this means the barrier, while normally held stationary in position above and guarding the live contacts, may yet be removed when occasion requires to afford access to all of the parts therebeneath.
While it is above stated that the resiliency of the contacts 9 and 10, as well as the resiliency of the blades H, serve to supple ment the springs 22 in producing a quick break movementof the mechanism, nevertheless, it is apparent that the resiliency of the contacts alone might ervein some instances to produce quick break movement of the switch blades. This is also equally true with regard to the resilient character of the switch blades. Where both the switch blades and. contacts are resilient, a sufficiently quick break is aiforded so that in many instances the springs 22 may be entirely dispensed with or reduced in size. The springs 22 may even, in some instances, be looked upon as being only for the purpose of malntaining the switch blades in their full off position when the toggle is broken.
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims. it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be in terpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A switch mechanism comprising a pair of independently mounted relatively movable switch blades. contacts one for each of said switch blades, a fuse connected in series between said switch blades. and means for operating the switch blades relatively with [30 respect to the fuse and into and out of engagement with said contacts respectively.
2. A switch mechanism comprising a pair of elements spaced apart and adapted for receiving the opposite ends of a fuse, a pair of contacts one associated with each of said elements, and switch devices relatively movable with respect to the fuse and to one another for making and breaking electrical connection between each of said elements and its respective contact.
A switch mechanism comprising a pair of elements spaced apart and adapted to receive a fuse between them, a pair of contacts one associated with each of said elements, a pair of switch blades one electrically connected with each of said elements and being movable relatively to each other into and out of engagement with said contacts respectively, and means for so moving said switch blades.
t, A switch mechanism comprising a pair of elements spaced apart and adapted to receive a stationary fuse between them, a pair of contacts one associated with each of said elements, a pair of switch blades one flexibly and conductively connected with each of said elements and having contact portions disposed to move toward each other and into engagement with said mentioned contacts, and means for so moving said switch blades.
5. A switch mechanism comprising a pair of elements spaced apart and adapted to receive a stationary fuse between them,a pair of contacts one associated with each of said elements, a pair of switch blades one flexibly and conductively connected with each of said elements, means whereby said switch blades are independently pivotally supported to swing into and out of engage ment with said contacts respectively, and means for so swinging said switch blades.
6. A switch mechanism comprising a pair of elements spaced apart and adapted to receive a fuse between them, a pair of contacts one associated with each of said elements, a pair of switch blades one electrically connected with each of said elements, means whereby said switch blades are independently pivotally supported to swing into and out of engagement with said contacts respectively, a toggle connected between said switch blades movable into made and broken positions for swinging the switch blades. and means for operating the toggle T, A, switch mechanism comprising a pair of elements spaced apart and adapted to rel-rive a fuse etween thcm. a pair of contact (inc as o iated with each of said do mrnts, :1 pair t switch blades one electrically nncrtcd with carh ol" said elements, m ans whciweby said switch blades are iln'le prudently pivolally support d to swing into and out of engagement with said contacts respectively, and means for swinging said switch blades, said means being of a charactor to lock the switch blades in engage ment with said contacts.
8. A switch mechanism comprising a pair of elements spaced apart and adapted to receive a fuse between them, a pair of coir tacts one associated with each of said elements, a pair of switch blades one electrically connected with each of said elements, means whereby said switch blades are inde pendently pivotally supported to swing into and out of engagement with said contacts respectively, means for swinging said switch blades, said means including a toggle movable into made and broken positions and adapted when in made position to hold the switch blades locked in engagement with said contacts, and means for operating the toggle.
9. A switch mechanism comprising a pair of independently mounted switch blades, a pair of contacts one for each of said switch blades, connections between the switch blades operable to move the switch blades into and out of engagement with said contacts respectively, a single operating handle for operating said connections, and a stationary fuse electrically connected in series between said switch bladesv 10. A switch mechanism comprising a casing, a barrier within the casing dividing the casing into two compartments, a pair of contacts arranged within one of said compartments, a pair of switch blades also arranged in the same compartment operable into and out of engagement with said contacts, means to operate the switch blades, and a pair of fuse clips arranged within the other compartment being electrically connected one with each of said switch blades.
11. A switch mechanism comprising a casing, a barrier within the casing dividing the casing into two compartments, a pair of contacts arranged within one of said compartments spaced apart, a pair of switch blades arranged in the same compartment spaced a relatively greater distance apart and having portions movable toward each other into engagement with said contacts respectively, means for so moving said switch blades, and a pair of fuse clips supported by said barrier within the other compartment and electrically connected one with each of the switch blades.
12. A switch mechanism comprising a casing, a barrier within the casing dividing the casing into two compartments. a pair of contacts arranged within one of said com partments, supports for said barrier spaced apart. a pair of switch blades also within the same compartment operable into and out of engagement with said contacts rcspcctively carriers for said switch lades. said carriers being independently pivotally supbetween and being orted by said mentioned supports, means or swinging the carriers to operate the switch blades, fuse clips carried by said barrier in the other compartment, and flexible connections extending between said fuse clips and said switch blades respectively.
13. A switch mechanism comprisin a pair of switch blades pivotal supports or the switch blades whereby said switch blades are independently mounted, a pair of contacts with which the switch blades are adapted to cooperate, a toggle extending connected with the switch blades to swing the switch blades in unison. and a push rod connected with the knee joint of the toggle for operating the to gle.

A switch mechanism comprising a pair of switch blades, pivotal supports for the switch blades whereby said switch blades are independently mounted, a pair of contacts with which the switch blades are adepted to cooperate, means extending between and being connected with the switch blades operable to swing the switch blades in uni son, and an operating handle for the said means permitting independent movement thereof with respect to t e handle.

A switch mechanism comprising a pair of switch blades, pivotal supports for the switch blades whereby said switch blades are independently mounted, a pair of contacts with which the switch blades are adapted to coiiperate, means extending between and being connected with the switch blades operable to swing the switch blades in unison, said means being of a character to ermit quick break movement of the switch blades, and said contacts being resilient and being adapted to be depressed when engaged by said switch blades to thereby produce a quick break movement of the switch blades own from said contacts.

A switch mechanism comprising 8, cas ing having an entrance door thereto, switch blades arranged within the casing, movable into on and oil positions, a toggle for operating the switch blades, one link of the toggle having a slot formed therein, and means movable with the door disposed to traverse said slot codperative to prevent opening of the door while the switch blades are on and to prevent on movement of the switch blades while the door is open.
20. A switch mechanism comprising a casing having an entrance door thereto, a switch blade arranged within the casing, movable into on and off positions a toggle for operating the switch blade, and means fixed rigidly to move with the door disposed for directly e ging the toggle to cooperate therewith or preventing openin' of the door while the switch blade is on and for preventing on movement of the switch blade while the door is open.
21. A switch mechanism comprising a casing having an entrance door thereto, a pair of switch blades arranged within the casing movable into on and off positions, a toggle extending between and being connect ed with the switch blades for operating said switch blades in unison, and means carried by the door cooperative with the toggle to prevent 0 ening of the door while the switch bla es are on and to prevent on movement of the switch blades while the door is open.
