Description
No. 857,620. PATENTED JUNE 25, 1907.

COOLING DEVICE FOR ENGINES.
AAAAAAAA 101W 1 IIII NOV.1,-1906.
awe/Mow UNITED STATES ELMER B. HARSHBARGER, OF BELLEFONTAINE, OHIO.
COOLING DEVICE FOR ENGINES.
Application filed November 1,
T0 0 7], whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELMER B. HARSH- BARGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellefontaine, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Cooling Device for Engines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for cooling the cylinders and other heated parts of internal combustion motors.
The object of the invention is to provide means of this character of simple and inexpensive construction, which Will effectively radiate the heat produced. by the explosions in the motor.
I/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and ar rangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a detail, transverse sectional view through a portion of the cylinder of a gas engine or other internal combustion motor, showing the application of the invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a side view 011 an enlarged scale of one of the heat radiating tubes; Fig. 3 is a view of the same looking in a direction at right angles to that of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a plan view of a blank from which one of the heat radiating tubes or devices is formed.
In the practice of my invention I stamp or otherwise cut from suitable sheet metal blanks such as shown in Fig. 4 and then bend or shape these blanks into tubular devices such as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. It will be seen that the blank 1 has at its center a narrow portion 2 formed by cutting away its side edges at opposite points; and that it has at its ends reduced portions 3 also formed by cutting away its side edges. The formation of the narrow or reduced portions 2, 3 pro vide between them larger portions 4. In making one of the devices shown in Fig. 2 the blank 1 is bent or doubled upon itself and the portion 2 shaped to form a transversely extending tubular portion. Its two portions 4 are curved transversely so that they provide together a two-part longitudinally extending tubular portion. The ends 3. are curved outwardly in opposite directions and Specification of Letters Patent.
are crimped or corrugated transversely, as shown at 5.
Patented June 25, 1907. 1906. Serial No. 341,604.
In applying the devices 2 to the cylinder O of an'internal combustion engine or motor, I preferably arrange them in annular rows and have the devices in each two adjacent rows arranged in staggered relation, as shown in Fig; 1, but it will be understood that they may be arranged in any other suitable manner upon the cylinder or any other heated parts of a' motor or the like. The devices are secured in the cylinder, so that they project radially therefrom by forming in the outer face of the cylinder longitudinally extending parallel grooves c in which the crimped portions 5 are driven with a sufiicient force to retain them therein. It will be seen that these crimped portions upon the adjacent ends of'each two devices in the same annular row mesh or interlock with each other and are secured in the same groove; and that the two ends of each device span one of the longitudinal grooves c in the cylinder.
The construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be readily seen. These devices may be quickly and inexpensively formed by suitable machinery and applied to the Walls of the cylinder without the use of metal strips or balls. By making the loop shaped or tubular devices as explained instead of cutting them from finished tubing, a great saving is eiiected. The metal from which they are made slightly resilient and the two semi-tubular sections 4 are spaced apart so that the contraction and expansion of the cylinder walls has no ill effect upon the device, the latter acting as a spring.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent, is 2- 1. A cooling device of the character described, for attachment to a heated part of a motor, comprising a strip of metal doubled upon itself and shaped to provide a trans versely extending tubular portion at one end of the device, and a longitudinally-extending tubular portion intermediate the ends of the device, said strip having its ends bent out- Wardly and crimped.
2. The combination with a heated part of a motor having seats therein, of a plurality of cooling devices formed of strips of metal bent upon themselves and shaped to provide transverse tubular portions at the outer ends of such' devices, and longitudinal tubular portions intermediate the ends of such devices, said strips also having their ends crimped to provide crimped portions at the inner ends of such devices, each pair of adjacent crimped ends of such cooling devices being interlocked and engaged With one of the seats.
3. The combination With an engine cylin- A der having parallel grooves therein, of loopeach pair of the adjacent ends of the devices in each row being interlocked and seated in one of said grooves, and the devices in adjacent rows being arranged in staggered relation.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
