IMPROVEMENT IN MoRTIsrNMAcHINEeb The Schedule referred to in these' Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it mmv 'conce/rn Be it known that I, PETER A. Mew-Ens, of Cleversburg, in' the county of Cumberland, and State of Penusylvania, have invented-a new and useful Improvement in Mortising-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings', which are made a part of this specification.
The subject of my invention is a novel and simple maehinefor mortising fence-posts, framing for buildings, &c., adapted to cut at diierent angles relatively to the frame, or be reversed; and also to be adjusted vertically and longitudinally'in the frame, without irnpairing its movement.

'The frame of my machine may consist of a bedpiece, A,'provided with a slot or aperture, a, for the passage of the cutter in cutting thron gh the material,
which is generally inserted transversely of it four or more legs, A1, side pieces or ways, A2, having suitable grooves, a, in their inner edges, for the reception of corresponding tongues on the sliding frame, and end pieces or battens, A3 A4, which respectively form bearings for the operating and adjusting-devices, andthe latter of which is made removable by means of bolts, di, or equivalent devices, to admit of the withdrawal B may represent the driving-wheel or pinion.y It is mountedin bearings, b b', on the end piece A3 of the frame A'and bracket C, and provided with a crank, D, crank-wheel, pulley, or other device, for imparting or transmitting motion to it.
E is astud-shaft mounted in the bearing, e, on the lower edge ofthe bracket G, and provided with apinion, F, which meshes with the driving-wheel B.
The shaft E is formed with a tubular portion, E', for
the reception of the end of the shaft G, said tubular,
portion E being `further provided with longitudinal slots, e', for the reception of the ends of the pin g, which connects the movements of said shafts E andG, the elongated tubular portion and slots allowing the endwise movement of the shaft G in the longitudinal adjustment of its supporting-frame.

. The screw I is journalled in the bearing, i, in thel `end piece A* of the frame A, is provided with a handwheel, I', by which to operate it, andisheld from longitudinal displacement by the shoulders i t.
K is an annular or vperforated circular disk, mounted in a shouldered circular opening, H1, in the'surface of the table H,'for the reception -of the hanger of the cutter and its appurtenances, a similar disk, K', being mounted, at a suitable distance below the surface of the table, in an annular seat, L, which is supported ii'om the lower side ofthe table H by brackets Ll L2 L3.
.M represents a hanger, having a dovetailed or other angular shank, Ml, which occupies the correspondinglyformed grooves min the disks K and K.
Stud-shafts M2 M3, and vertical bearings M4 M5, are provided on said hanger, at suitable points, for the reception, respectively, ofthe rotary cutter-head N, the cog-wheel O, and the vertical shaft l?. v
A fork, Q, pivoted at q to the bracket L, and forming at Q a handle, by which to operate it, is employed to elevate the hanger M and its appurtenances, when desired, a grooved enlargement, p, being provided for the reception of said fork, when preferred.
The shaft Ghas its bearing in the hanger R, and carries a bevel-gear wheel, S, which meshes with the bevel-teeth t of the-gear-wheel T, the straight teeth t' of which mesh with the sliding pinion U on the shaft P. The shaft P further. carries a bevel-pinion, V, on iis lower end,` which meshes with the bevel-teeth o ofthe cog-wheel O.
The circumferential teeth o' of the' wheel O are arranged to correspond with .the teeth n of the cutterhead N, which teeth converge from side to side, to allow of the insertion of the alternate knives n n' on opposite sides of its periphery, to adapt it to out the entire width ofthe cutterhead.
W is a chip-guard, formed on or attached to the hangerM, in any suitable manner, to protectthe gearing V o.
The annulus K is provided, on its periphery, with teeth or cogs, k, which are meshed by a pinion, X, for the purpose of turning the cutter-head, to cause it to cut at different angles relatively to the frame.
The pinion X is seated in the circular depression H2 in the face of the table H, and has its bearing at the centre of a circular or segmental bracket, Y.
An arm, Z, is rigidly attached to the pivot of the pinion X, and is provided, at its outer end, with a clutch, z, operated by a hand screw, z. By loosening the screw` z the handle may be freely turned, and with it (through the gearing X k) the hanger M and its appurtenances, to any desired extent, and there locked by tightening the screw z. This arrangement may, however, be dispensed with, and a simple spring-catch,
provided with a suitable lug, to engage with the notchesl between the teeth of thedsk K, be substitutedtherefor.
As shown in gs. 4 and 5, the gear-teeth of the cutter-head N may be formed in the side, and the motion imparted to it direct from the bevel-pinion V.
The knives n, any desired number of which are used, are attached, by set-screws n2, in the apertures n3, and are arranged alternately on the opposite sides of the periphery of the head, as before described.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
1. I claim the rotary cutter-head N, having its knives al al arranged alternately on the opposite edges of its periphery, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The divided shaft G y, E e', so constructed and arranged as to permit the sliding motion of the table H, Without interfering with the rotation of the said shaft. v
' 3. In combination with the sliding hanger M, having an angular shank, M1, I claim the circular perforated disks K K', constructed and arranged substantially as described, and adapted to be rotated to turn or reverse the cutter, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
4. I claim the rim or range o eogs 11arranged obliquely around the periphery of the cutter-head N, for the purpose of avoiding the knives, in combination with a Correspondingly-ohlique cog-Wheel O o', for driving the sanne, substantially as described.
5. The chip-guard- W, constructed and arranged as shown and described, to protect the gearing V o.
