WATERBURY MFG. CO., OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORA- TOOTH-POWDER BOX.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed M rch 4,1907. $erial No. 360,522.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. PEEKINs,
va citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tooth-Powder Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1 a side view of a tooth powder box constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a top view of the same with the cap in closed position. Fig. 3 a transverse sectional view of the upper part of a box showing the cap connected therewith.- Fig. 4 a sectional view on a line at right angles to that shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 a sectional view showing the cap on the top but before the stud is upset to interlock the cap with the top. Fig. 6 a broken top or plan view of the box with the cap removed. Fig. 7 a top or plan view of the cap detached.
This invention relates to an improvement in tooth powder boxes, that is, boxes to contain tooth powder or other material in powdered form which it is desirable to be able to discharge in comparatively large quantities as distinguished from a finely perforated top, the object of the invention being the production of simple means for uniting the cap with the top whereby it may be readily turned thereon but held against accidental removal; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a box 2 preferably round but which may, of
course, be of any desired form. This box has a top 8 secured to or formed integral with the body 2. The central portion of the top is drawn to plate 5. In the center of the top plate is an opening 6 one half of which is cut on a larger circle than the other half so as to form shoulders 7 and 8. In the top plate also is a segmental discharge slot 9. The cap 10 is also struck up from sheet metal and adapted to turned in one form a straight neck 4 and a top straight neck 4 on which it is closely fit the In the center of the cap adapted to turn.
the metal is struck in to form an inwardly projecting stud 11 and a corresponding cavity 12 in the top. At the outer edge of the cavity the metal is struck inward by a small point to form a slight eccentric projection 13 in the inside of the cap. The cap is also formed with a clearance slot 14 corresponding to the slot 9 in the top plate. The cap is placed over the neck and the stud 11 upset so as to cause its edges to overlap the opening 6 bringing the slight projection 13 into the larger diameter of the opening and in position to engage with either of the shoulders 7 or 8 forming a stop to limit the rotation of the cap which is swiveled to the top plate by the upsetting of the stud. When the cap is direction the opening 14 will register with the opening 9. When turned to the limit of its opposite movement they will be out of line with eachother so as to close the box. This construction provides simple means for uniting the cap with the top permitting it to be easily turned to the closed position and not liable to accidental removal.
I claim:
The combination with a box having a top formed with a neck and a top plate, a central opening in the top plate having stop shoulders, said top plate also provided with a clearance slot combined with a cap adapted to set over said neck, the said cap having a clearance slot to register with the slot in the cap plate, the central portion of the cap struck inward forming a stud to extend through the perforation in the top plate, said stud upset within the top so as to overlap the inner face of the top plate, and a projection formed at one side of said stud and adapted to engage with the shoulders in the perforation in the top plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
