Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
, HENRY SELLON, OFBRIDGER, WYOMING.
WHIFFLETBEE.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SELLoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridger, in the county of Uinta and State of Wyoming,
have invented a new and useful Whiffletree,
of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to improvements in whiflietrees, and has for its object the provision of an improved form of doubletree, with swingletrees attached to the upper side thereof, that will not raise at the rear edge nor show a tendency to turn over when the draft is applied; and a further object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature that will be simple in construction and eX- tremely durable and in which the parts subject to wear may be easily replaced.
ln the accompanying drawing z-Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved whiffletree; Fig. 2 is a perspective of detached parts; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on line 3- 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1. f
Referring to the drawing, the doubletree 1 is mounted transversely upon the upper side of the fulcrum block 2 and is rigidly secured thereto by a riveted halved together joint. The forward end of the block is provided with an upwardly-extending stud Aor fulcrum 3 which is inclined slightly rearward. The sides of the fulcrum block converge forward and the ends of the block extend beyond the sides of the doubletree and are rounded in outline about the fulcrum as a center of curvature. The fulcrum block is supported upon the tongue in the housing 4 which eX- tends longitudinally over the fulcrum block and is recessed to receive the same and is provided with an opening 5 in which the fulcrum finds a bearing, and forwardly-converging sides to correspond with the sides of the fulcrum block; the ends of the housing are securely bolted to the tongue.
The swingletrees 6, preferably made of metal and with trace hooks either integral therewith or detachable, are pivotally supported in the yokes 8 by means of the bolts 9 which are keyed to the swingletrees and pass through transversely elongated holes 10 in the doubletree. The yokes are rigidly secured to the rear edge of the doubletree which sustains the draft from the traces, the elongation of the holes 10 preventing any of the draft being applied to the doubletree directly through the pivot bolts 9.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February l, 1907. Serial No. 355,312. i
Patented June 18, 1907.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, a tongue, a recessed housing secured thereto and provided with a pivot opening, a fulcrum block having a fulcrum stud adapted to iit in said opening and provided with a recessed face, a double tree also recessed, the recessed portion of the double tree and block interfitting, and means for securing the block and double tree to gether.
2. In combination, a tongue, a recessed housing rigidly secured thereto, there being a pivot opening at one end of the recess, and the opposite wall of the recess being curved on an are struck from the center of such pivot opening, a recessed fulcrum block disposed within the recess of the housing, and carrying a fulcrum [stud fitting within said opening, one end of said block fitting against the curved wall of the housing recess, and the sides of the block converging toward the fulcrum stud, a double tree having a recess, the walls of which converge to conform to the convergent sides of the block, and means for securing the double tree and block to each other.
3. A coupling for whiffletrees comprising a member recessed to receive a part to be coupled and having converging sides and rounded ends, a fulcrum projecting from one of the ends thereof, 'and a second part having converging sides corresponding to the sides of said first member. I
4. In a whiflietree, the combination of a double tree, a swingle tree mounted thereon, a yoke fitting around the rear edgesof both trees, the forward ends of the yoke having bolt receiving openings, a bolt extending through said openings and a corresponding opening in the swingle tree, the double tree being provided with a transversely elongated aperture for the passage of said bolt, and means for securing the lower rear portion of the yoke to the double tree.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY SELLON.
