Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1915.
Application filed March 6, 1914. Serial No. 822,914.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL B. JAooBs, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Whiffietree Clip and Hook, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact desoription.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved whifiletree clip and hook arranged to permit of conveniently engaging the traces with the hook or removing the same therefrom, to prevent the traces from becoming accidentally detached, to reduce the wear between the clip and hook to a minimum, and to allow convenient replacing of the wearing parts by new ones in case such wearing parts are worn out.
In order to accomplish the desired re sult use is made of a clip provided with integral lugs spaced apart in a transverse direction, a horizontally-disposed bolt connecting the said lugs with each other and a spool on the said bolt intermediate the said lugs. Use is also made of a loop provided with a reduced rear end forming an eye engaging the said spool, and a curved hook extending sidewise from the front end of the loop and curved rearwardly and inwardly, the point of the hook lying in the plane of the loop at a point in the longitudinal median line of the loop.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a whiflietree hook and clip as applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the same with the eve of the hook in section; Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a cross section of the same on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
On each end of the whiffietree A is secured the metallic sheathing B of a clip, and the said sheathing B is provided with forwardly-extending integral lugs O, C spaced apart in a transverse direction, as plainly indicated in the drawings. A bolt 1) connects the lugs C. C with each other, the bolt passing loosely through an aperture in the lugs C and screwing into the lug C, the latter being provided for this purpose with a thickened portion C shown in Figs.
1, 2 and 4. The sheathing B is-preferably secured inplace on the end of the whiffletree A by a pin E extending through the forward side of the sheathing B into the wood of the whiiiletree A, the said pin E having a head E extending between the lugs G and C. On the bolt D is held a spool F intermediate the lugs G, G, and this spool is engaged by an eye G formed on the rear end of a loop G provided at its forward end with an integral hook G adapted to be engaged by links H on the rear end of the corresponding trace, as plainly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The hook G is curved rearwardly and inwardly and its point terminates in the vertical plane of the loop G at the point in the longitudinal median line of the loop G and near the widest portion of the opening of the loop Gr. By the arrangement described the loop G can be readily swung outwardly into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, to allow the operator to conveniently engage the trace link H with the hook G after which the loop G is swung forwardly to extend longitudinally in line with the trace, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 8. It will be noticed that when the loop G is in this forward position, the link H is not liable tobecome accidentally detached from the hook G As indicated in the drawings, the forward members of the loop G diverge in a rearward direction from the base of the hook G so that the link H has a bearing on the said members and is not liable to become accidentally detached from the hook G It will further be noticed that on removing the bolt D, the spool F if worn out can be readily removed and replaced by a new one without changing the position of the sheathing B on the end of the whifiietree A. It will further be noticed that the eye G of the loop G is opposite the head E of the pin E and consequently the said pin E is not liable to become accidentally detached from the sheathing B of the whiflietree A.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A whifiietree clip, comprising a tubular metallic sheathing fitting onto the end of the whifiietree, and provided with integral apertured lugs disposed vertically and extending forwardly approximately at a right angle to the axis of the sheathing, the lugs being spaced apart and being located intermediate the ends of the sheathing, a
transverse bolt engaging the apertures in said lugs to connect the lugs with each other, a spool on the said bolt, and a vertically disposed hook having a link provided at the rear with a reduced eye engaging the said spool.
2. A whifiietree clip, comprising a metallic sheathing fitting onto the whiilletree and provided with forwardly-extending lugs spaced apart in a transverse direction and located approximately equal distances in ward from the ends of the sheathing, a bolt connecting the said lugs with each other, a
spool held on the said bolt intermediate the said lugs, a vertically-disposed hook having a link provided with a reduced rear eye engaging the said spool, and a pin extending through the said sheathing into the whiflietree, the head of the pin being intermediate the said lugs opposite the said eye.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL B. JACOBS.
