Patented June 11., 1907.
Application and November 7,1905. Serial No. 342,400.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINANnM. AUF- newand useful'Improvement in Brushes, of
v which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in brushes. In this art, manufacturers of brushes have endeavored to, and have utilized to a considerable extent, plastic material as a means for holding the bristles to the back; Itis, however, usual in handling this material to use it in a semi-liquid state, and
provide means on the brush back to co-oper- .ate with the plastic material so that when it sets it holds the bristles and back together. This construction does not ive the best results, inasmuch as it precludes the use of cement to bind the parts together on all surfaces where they contact.
According to my present invention I employ a thin sheet of material to provide a veneer preferably of the same material as the brush back and apply the plastic material thereto and-let it set. After the plastic material hardens the molded form carrying the bristles togethenwith the veneer is covered with cement and applied to a brush back, and the cement covers the entire exposed surface of the molded form as well asthe edges of the veneer which extend beyond the'line of bristles, and when applied to the brush back the elements are securely bound together. A brush thus constructed presents the appearance of having a solid back, and by reason of.
the veneer being cemented to the wooden back, astrong and durable article is produced.
Other objects andadvantages will be hereinafter referred to and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is an elevation partially in section of a brush constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line :t:c, Fig. 1.
The same numerals refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1, indicates a brush back, having a cavity 2, to receive a mass of plasticmaterial 3. The ends of the bristles 4, are embedded in the lastic material, and project outwardly therefrom in the usual manner. A thin sheet of material forming a veneer 5, is applied to the base of the back-1, and extends tothe edge of the latter. The veneer is provided with a plurality of openings 6, through which the bristles 4, pass. The base of the back 1, surrounding the cavity forms a surface 7, against which that portion of the veneer which extends beyond the cavity may be secured. I preferably employ cement for fastening the veneer to the surface 7, after which the edges are trimmed and the back and veneer are polished to present the appearance of a solid back brush.
I desire to emphasize the fact that the edges ofthe veneer extend beyond the edges of the molded form of plastic material and to the edge of the brush back, as it is this particular construction which enables me to cement the veneer and brush back together.
A brush constructed as described possesses many decided advantages over the prior state of the art. As shown, the veneer is cemented entirely around its edge -to the brush back, which rigidly holds the two elements together, and at the same time serves to support and hold the plastic material in the cavity. The veneer interposed between the outer free ends of the bristles and the plastic material performs another decidedly important function. This is by reason of the edges of the veneer extending outside the line of bristles, the moisture incident to the wetting of the brush, will not seep through the plastic material and produce unpleasant odors. In other words by extending the veneer beyond the plastic material and cementing it to the brush back a sanitary brush is produced.
/Vhat I claim is v A brush having a back formed with a cavity, plastic material embedded in the cavity, bristles extending from the plastic material, a veneer having perforations through which the bristles pass, said veneer extending outwardly beyond the plastic material to the outer edges of the brush back, the surface of the veneer beyond the plastic material being cemented to the surface of the brush back beyond the edges of the plastic material.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FERDINAND M. AUFSESSER.
