Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK ALDRICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of I/Vayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dumping-WVagons; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to dumping wagons, and the object of my improvements is to provide an improved wagon, the box, or receptacle, of which can be turned to discharge its contents, and one especially adapted to the handling of asphalt.
I attain this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

A is the front, and B the rear axle. O is a reach connecting said axles. D are burners located upon the reach C. E is a standard secured to the axle B, and rising vertically therefrom. F is a standard to the lower end of which the axle A is pivoted, so as to turn in a horizontal plane independent of said standard. G is the bearing at the upper end of the standard E. J is a bearing at the upper end of the standard F.
P is the box or receptacle. Q is a jacket partly surrounding said box, leaving a space between said jacket and said box, said space is open at the top and at the bottom. The jacket Q is discontinuous to leave an opening g just above the burners D. Thus, when the burners D are lighted, a current of hot air passes between the jacket Q and the box P to. keep the contents of said box warm. A shield to prevent the accidental extinguishing of the burners would, of course, be provided, but as this is within the common knowledge of the art, it has not been thought necessary to show it in the drawings.
II is an arbor, or bearing, extending from one end of the box P, and resting in the bearing G. I is a second arbor, or bearing, ex tending axially in line with the arbor H from the other end of the box, and resting in a bearing J. The axial line through the arbors II and I is above the center of gravity of the box P, and is at about the center transversely of the ends of said box.
L is a latch pivoted at K upon the reach C. 7c is a weight at one end of said latch. There is a notch m upon the bottom of the box P adapted to be engaged by the latch L to hold the box in its upright position against any accidental displacement.
a is a seat for the driver upon the standard F, and b is a platform upon said standard.
M is a bell crank lever pivoted at one side of the seat a so as to be conveniently manipulated by the driver. One arm of said lever is connected by a chain to one end of the lever L, so that said lever may be tilted to disengage it from the notch on the box P.
p is a handle secured to the upper part of that end of the box P which is adjacent to the driver. A chain IV is secured to said handle, and extends downward at one side, so as to be conveniently reached by one standing upon the ground beside the wagon.
The operation of the above described device is as followsz-WVhen it is desired to discharge the contents of the box, the lever M is turned, disengaging the lever L, and the box is turned by means of the handle p to discharge its contents to the position indicated. by dotted lines in Fig. If the driver is upon the ground, the same result may be attained by disengaging the lever L and turning the box by means of the chain That I claim is 1. In a wagon, the combination of a front and rear axle, a reach extending between said axles, a standard rising from each end of said wagon, a bearing in each of said standards, a box provided with arbors at its ends resting in said bearings, a latch on said reach, said box being adapted to be engaged by said latch when said box is in its normal position. i

In a wagon, the combination of a standard, rising from each end of said wagon, a bearing in each of said standards, a box provided with an arbor at each end thereof, said arbors resting in said bearings, a seat upon one of said standards, a latch adapted to engage said box in its normal position, a lever arm located at one side of said seat and connected with said latch to disengage the same.
3. In a wagon, the combination of a standard rising from each end of said wagon, a bearing in each of said. standards, a box provided with an arbor at each end thereof, said arbors restingin said bearings, a seat upon one of said standards, a latch adapted to engage said box in its normal position, a lever arm located at one side of said seat and connected with said latch.
4. In a dump wagon, the combination of a standard rising from each end thereof, a bearing in each of said standards, a box located between said standards and provided with an arbor at each end thereof resting in one of said bearings, a acket partly surrounding said box and opening at the top and bottom, burners located upon said wagon, and means for securing said box in its normal position with the opening in said acket above said burners.
5. In a dump wagon, the combination of the front and rear axle, a reach extending between said axles, a standard rising from each end of said wagon, a bearing in each of said standards, a box' provided with a jacket opening toward the top and bottom thereof located between said standards and provided with an arbor at each end resting in one of said bearings, burners located upon said reach, and means for securing said box in its normal position with one of the openings through said acket above said burners.
