Be it known that I, JOHN Scnnonnna, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Gearing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to gearing especially adapted for devices having a rotary beater or stirrer arranged within a receptacle and may be applied to devices of various characters, but is especially designed to be used in connection with washing machines of the character shown and described in Letters Patent issued t'o me en the 23rd day of May, 1893, and numbered 498,031. In the construction shown therein a frame or yoke is provided with a rack 'formed thereon and adaptedto be moved bodily in a vertical direction on a frame or carrier upon which said yoke is mounted. In such construction, however, the yoke supporting' the rack has no rocking movement relatively to the frame upon which it is mounted.
This invention' has for its principal object to provide means whereby a yoke carrying a rack is adapted to have a rocking movement as well as a vertical bodily movement on a carrying frame, and a further object of the invention is to provide means whereby a reciprocating rack may be operated by a hand lever so as to rotate a vertical shaft in connection with mechanism embodying a fly wheel mounted upon a drive shaft and adapted to turn continuously in one direction, while the vertical shaft rotates in alternating directions, thereby augmenting the reciproeating movement of the hand lever by the momentum of the 'fly wheel mounted upon the drive shaft.
Other objects of the invention are stated. in connection with t-he description of the sev eral elements composing the same.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification, in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view partly broken away of a washing machine embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the parts shown in Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 1 1 of Fig. 1, with the ends of curved abutments shown in section; Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken en the line 1 1 of Fig. 1 showing some of the parts arranged differently from the corresponding parts shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a plan view partly in section of a yoke having a rack formed thereon, and portions of a carry ing frame engaging the yoke 5 Fig. 6 is a front elevation of a reciprocating lever partly broken away and mechanism to which it is connected; and Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the end of a reciprocating lever, with a portion ofthe housing to which it is connected shown in cross section.
As illustrated in the drawings, a tank or trough 1 is provided with a lid or cover 2, which is connected by means of hinges 3 with a ledgel 1 made rigid to the upper portion of the tank. A frame 6 is secured in any suitable manner to the lid or cover 2 of the tank, and is provided with vertical posts 7 and 8 which are provided at their upper portions with bearings 9 and 1() adapted to journal a drive shaft 11, which is provided on its 'ou ter end with a fly wheel 12 having a crank or handle 13 for operating the same so as to impart a rotary motion to said drive shaft. The inner end of the shaft is provided with a pinion 14 at a distance from the inner end of the shaft, and the shaft is alsoprovided with a collar 15 arranged on said shaft between the pinion 141 and the bearing 1() for the shaft. A housing 16 is attached to the cover of the tank and is preferably made integral with the frame 6. The housing is provided with upper and lower parallel guides or grooves 21 adapted to receive the upper and lower ribs 18 and 19 of the rack 17, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, whereby the rack 17 is adapted to have a reciprocating movement in said guides or grooves. The teeth of the rack 17 mesh with the teeth of a pinion 22u which is mounted on a vertical shaft 23 rotatably supported in bearings 24 and 25 which extend outward from said housing 16. The shaft 23 is provided with bushings 26 and 27, and a pin 28 extending through the-shaft near the upper end thereof so as to maintain the shaft in the proper vertical position. The shaft 23 is provided on its lower end with any desired number of arms 29, preferably diverging from the shaft 23 outward and adapted to stir the liquid contained in the tank and agitate the garments placed therein.
A carrying frame is mounted upon the back of the rack 17, and consists preferably of uprights 31 connected together at their IOO upper ends by means of a cross bar 32. A yoke 33 is mounted upon the uprights 31 of the carrying frame and is made substantially elliptical in form, with inner and outer parallel continuous flanges 34 and 35 formed on its outer face, which flanges are curved at the ends of the yoke so as to extend in circular lines. A cross bar 40 is secured to the back of the yoke 33, and provided with off-set ends bearing against the back of said yoke sov as to leave a space between the cross bar and yoke forming openings adapted to receive the uprights 31 of the carrying frame. Bosses or separating blocks 41 are arranged between the cross bar 40v and the back of the yoke, which are secured in place by means of bolts 42 having fastening nuts 43 secured to their ends. By means of such separating blocks the longitudinal movement of the yoke 33 relatively to the uprights 31 is limited so that the uprig'hts 31 serve not only as a carrier for the yoke 33 but also as guides to limit the longitudinall movement of such yoke. The yoke 33 is also provided on its outer face with a rack frame 37, the teeth 38 of which are separated from each other by open spaces 39, and are engagedfby the teeth of the pinion 14. mountedon the drive shaft 11. The inner end-of the shaft 1 1 'which projects beyond the pinion 14 engages the channel or groove' made by the continuous flanges 34 and 35 of the yoke 33 so as to enable the yoke to ride on the end of said shaft. Reversely disposed curved abutments 45 are secured to the cover ofthe tank in any suitable manner, as by means of screws 44, and are located on opposite sides of the frame 6 in line with the yoke 33.
When the device is in use and the shaft 11 is rotated'by means of the handle 13 attached to the fly wheel 12 which is secured to said shaft, the pinion 14 meshing with the teeth 38 ofthe rack 37 moves such rack lengthwise in a direction opposite to that in which the pinionv 14 is turning. During such movement the yoke 33 is slid along on the projecting end of the shaft 11 which is in constant engagement with the groove or channel formed by the parallel flanges 34 and 35. As the yoke 33 is moved lengthwise by means of the pinion 14, and one end of the yoke is reached by such pinion, the opposite end of the yoke will bear against and ride up ithe curvedv edge of the abutment 45 adjacent thereto. As the rotation of the drive shaft is continued such end of the yoke will be tiltedupwardly until the teeth of the pinion 14 are carried into engagement with the teeth of the rack 37 on the under side thereof, at which time the carrying frame 30 and the rack 17 secured thereto will be caused to seas 12 for the transversely moving rack 17 is provided with a vertical lug 46 having an aperture 47 as shown in Fig. 7. A lhand lever 48 is pivoted to the lug 46 of the carrying frame by means of side plates 49 having ofl'- set ends 50 adapted to bear against each other and engage the aperture 47 formed in the lug 46. The plates 49 are secured to the lever 48 by means of bolts 51 and 52, the latter having a fastening nut 53 which when loosened tpon the bolt 52 or removed therefrom enables the hand lever to be readily detached from the lug. A link 56 is pivotally attached at one end to the lever 48 by means of a bolt 57, and the opposite end 55 of the link is provided with an aperture which engages a pin 54 mounted upon the crossbar 32 of the carrying frame, and secured thereon by means of a washer 59 and a bolt 60 attached to the pin 54 and provided with a nut 61.
By swinging the upper end of the hand lever 48 the carrying frame 3() which is secured to the back of the rack 17 is moved back and forth, and by means of the engagement between the rack and the pinion 22a, the vertical shaft 23 and the divergent arms 29 secured thereto rotate alternately in opposite directions, while the shaft 11 is continuously rotating in one direction, whereby the reciprocating movement of the hand lever is augmented by the momentum of the fly wheel mounted upon the driving shaft 11.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a housing, of a rotary shaft, a pinion mounted on said shaft, a reciprocating rack adapted to slide in said housing and operate said' pinion, a carrying frame secured to said rack, a yoke having a rocking and a vertical bodily movement on said frame and provided with a rack, a drive shaft, and a pinion mounted thereon adapted to engage the rack of said yoke, substantially as shown and described.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a reciprocating rack, a carrying frame secured thereto, a rack mo nnted upon said carrying` frame and having a rocking and a bodily movement vertically thereon, a shaft, and a pinion mounted on said shaft adapted to engage the rack ol said yoke, substantially as shown and described.
6. A rotary sha'l't, and a pinion mounted thereon, in combination with a reciprocating rack a carrying lran'ie secured to said rack, a yoke having a rocking and a vertical bodily movement on said vframe and provided with a rack, inclined abutments arranged in line with the ends ol' said yoke and adapted to raise said ends, a shaft and a pinion adapted to engage the rack of said yoke, substantially as shown and described.
