Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed April 30,1906. Serial No. 314,528.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN P. OCoNNER and JAMES E. WRIGHT, citizens of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamps; and we do declare the following to be a full; clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itjjappertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in hand stamps used by post office employees and others.
The objectfiof the invention is to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character, and thereby render the same more efficient and durable in use and less expensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel fea tures of construction, combination and ar rangement of parts, as will be; hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a view, showing the application of our improved hand stamp; Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the same, showing a modified form of hand grip applied to it and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the stamping and inking rollers and the casing or holder within which they are mounted.
The embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings is in the form of a hand stamp, especially adapted for the use of post office employees, for stamping upon the letters that they have handled, their individual mark, but within the scope of the invention it mayijbe adapted for other uses. As shown, the device comprises a hand grip 1, a spring 2 connected thereto and a casing or holder 3, which is carried by said spring and contains a marking roller and means for supplying ink to the same. The hand grip 1 shown in Fig. 1, comprises a strap or other flexible connection 4 adapted to be passed around the users hand and to have its ends adjustably connected by a buckle 5 or any other suitable fastening means. Upon the outer face of a portion of the strap 4 is secured a metal plate 6, to which one end of the spring 2 is secured by a screw or the like 7.
Instead of using the strap 1 as a hand grip, we may employ a resilient metal loop 8, which is shaped to fit the hand, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The spring 2 is curved or shaped as shown, to permit a large bundle of letters to be held in the hand as seen in Fig. 1, so that as they are successively drawn out from beneath the stamping or marking device 3, the number or other mark upon the inking roller of said device will be imprinted upon each letter.
The device 3 comprises a substantially U- shaped frame 10, which has journaled between its two sides 11, a marking roller 12, preferably in the form of a small rubber cylinder formed in its periphery with depressions of any description, which make the desired numbers, characters or marks upon the letters or other papers to be marked. This marking roller has its peri hery projecting beyond the outer edges of t 1e sides 11 of the frame or holder 10 and it runs in contact with an inking roller 13, which is in the form of a cylindrical pad of felt or the like secured upon a shaft or roller journaled between the sides 11. Ink is sup lied to the inking roller or pad 13 from an in reservoir or receptacle 14, which has a tapered bottom terminating in an opening disposed close to the periphery of the roller 13. Said reservoir is adapted to contain cotton or other absorbent material 15 to hold the ink, and the latter may be squeezed out of the same and onto the roller 13 by pressing such absorbent material with a pencil or the like. The ink reservoir is adjustably mounted u on the central portion 16, which connects t ie sides 11 of the frame 10, by forming upon it a slotted or bifurcated arm 18, which is adapted to hook over said ortion 16 and to engage aclamping screw 19 wiich adjustably connects the frame 10 to one of the slotted arms of an angle bracket 20. The other slotted arm of this bracket is adjustably connected by means of a screw 21 to the outer or free end of the spring 2. By mounting the inking apparatus in this manner upon the spring, it will be seen that it may be adjusted at any angle desired.
The construction, use and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accom anying drawings. It will be seen that when t 10 device is applied to the hand as shown in Fig. 1, and a bundle of letters are held in the hand beneath the inking and marking roller frame, said letters may be successively stamped or marked by successively removing the uppermost letter. The resiliency of the spring 2 will keep the marking roller in contact with the upper- ITO most letter as the pack or bundle diminishes in size.
The different parts of the device may be made of any suitable material and in any suitable size according to the size and shape of the hand upon which they are to be used.
Various other changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In combination with a stamping device having a revoluble marking roller, a device to grip the hand, and a spring connecting the gripping device and the stamping device and serving to press the marking roller of the latter against the object to be stamped held in the hand, and hence causing said roller, when said object is moved, to be rotated and to stam or mark upon such object.
2. n combination with a stamping device including a revoluble marking roller and having a loop to pass around the hand, and a spring arm connecting the loop and the stamping device and serving to press the marking roller against the object to be stamped and held in the hand, and hence causing said roller, when said object is moved, to be rotated and to stamp the mark upon such object.
3. A device of the character described comprising a hand grip, a spring thereon, an angle bracket adjustably mounted upon the free end of said frame, a substantially U- shaped frame adjustably mounted u on said bracket, a marking roller journale in said frame, an inking roller journaled in said frame and in contact with said marking roller, and an ink reservoir adjustably secured in said frame, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN P. OCONNER. JAMES E. WRIGHT.
