To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. JACK- soN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and. State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Gas-Burner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to gas burners, and has for its object to provide means for thoroughly mixing gas and atmospheric air in proper proportion to roduce quick and complete combustion of the gas. Such results I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan of a discharge head connected therewith.
As illustrated in the drawings, a cylindrical receptacle 1 is provided with legs supported upon a base plate 3. A cap 4 is secured to the top of the receptacle 1, and is provided with a central hub 5 having an exterior thread 5 which engages a corresponding thread 6 formed on the lower end of a tube 6, which is also provided with lateral apertures 6 arranged above the hub 5 of the cap of the receptacle thereby forming a mixing chamber. The lower portion of the receptacle 1 is provided with an inlet port 1 which extends at an incline through the bottom of the receptacle and is connected with an inlet supply pipe 1*. The gas coming from the supply pipe through the inlet port 1 strikes against the blades 7 mounted upon an arbor 8 within the cylinder. The arbor 8 is provided on its lower end with a pivot bearing 8 which engages a corresponding recess in a bearing block 9 having a threaded connection with the bottom of the receptacle 1. The upper end of the arbor 8 is provided with a head 10 which is provided on its periphery with recesses 10, shown in Fig. 2. The periphery of the head 10 bears against the inner periphery of the hub 5 formed on the cap of the receptacle, and as the gas strikes the blades 7 it rotates the arbor upon which the blades are mounted and the head 10 secured to the end of said arbor. The gas passes through the series of recesses 10 of the head 10, and draws a current of air into the mixing chamber through the apertures 6 of the tube 6, and feeds the supply of oxygen, thereby increased, to the burner, thereby facilitating the combustion of the gas. WVhile the head 5, as shown in Fig. 1, is arranged below the level of the apertures 6", it may, if desired, be extended up into the tube 6 above the level of said aperture, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
In the construction shown and described the inlet port 1 is formed in the bottom of the receptacle; but I do not desire to be limited to such construction, however, as the general design of the receptacle and the arrangement of the inlet port may be varied without departing from my invention. Thus the inlet port may be arranged in the side wall of the receptacle instead of the bottom, provided the port is extended at an incline to said wall, so that the jet of gas will impinge upon the blades 7 and rotate the arbor 8 upon which they are mounted. Other modifications may be employed in carrying out my invention without departing from the scope and capabilities.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a receptacle, a mixing chamber connected therewith by a pas sage, a revoluble member within said receptacle adapted to be propelled by the flow of a gaseous body passing therethrough into said mixing chamber, and a revoluble distributing head connected with said revoluble member and mounted within said passage to control the flow of gas into said mixing chamber, said distributing head being provided with apertures which constantly shift their position in the mixing chamber, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a receptacle, a mixing chamber, connected therewith by a passage, a revoluble shaft mounted within said receptacle and provided with laterally ex tending blades, and a revoluble distributing head connected with said shaft, rotating therewith and provided with apertures which constantly shift their position in the mixing chamber, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with a receptacle having an inlet and an outlet passa e, of a mixing chamber connected with said outlet passage, a distributing head mounted within said outlet passage and provided with apertures for controlling the delivery of a gaseous body from the said receptacle into the mixing 1 name to this specification in the presence of chamber, and means for rotating the distribtwo subscribing witnesses.
