Be it known that l, WILLA MAC UARIE MALONE, ol' Wandi Narrabri, in the State of New South ales and Commonwealth of Australia, journalist, have invented im proved Fastenings for Boots and Shoes and Leggings and the Like, ol which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lastcnings for boots, shoes, leggings and other articles in which two edge portions or llaps are required to beheld together against a normal tendency to separate and the invention has for its object to provide a simple, convenient and suit able fastening device as a substitute for lat-e1 buttons and the like. which shall at the same time present an elegant and finished appearance.
Generally speaking the invention consists of a series-of retaining plates secured inside the adj acent flaps. the plates of each flap be ing provided with outwardly proecting and reversely bent retaining-lips adapted to be engaged by suitably formed clips or holders which are fastened to the under side or face of a flexible strip or tongue of leather or other suitable n'iaterial which when drawn into locl ing or operative position serves to cover up the space or crack between the iiipposed edges of the article to be secured. These and other features characterizing my invention will be more particularly described and defined in the specification and the claims forming part thereof.
In order to illustrate how this invention may be carried out in practice reference will now be made to the drawing here *ith in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe having this improved fastening and showing this fastening as it would appear in the act of fastening the shoe. Fig. 2 is a partial similar view of the same showing the fastening complete. Fig. 3 is an inside view of the sliding keeper and Fig. 4 a face view of the. receiving slides. Fig. 5 being a similar view to Fig. 4 showing a modified construction of catch or holder on said receiving slides.
The receiving slides are shown made in sections being formed of clips or turned-over pieces having bases 6 grooves 7 and lips 8. The base 6-is perforated for the sewing of the same to the shoe between the outer materiai I and its lining exposing only the grooves 7 and the lips 8.
The sliding keeper is formed of a series of similar clips having bases S) and lips-1O said lips being formed in a dead curved. end ll on the lowermost of the clips to form astop to limit. the upward movement of the keeper. These clips are sewed byperiorations to acontinuousstrip of leather or kid or the like with a tab 12 at the top.
The clips forming the receiving slide and the 4 sliding keeper may be separated as shown in the drawings. The corners of the lips are rounded to facilitate the sliding and the grooves have curred corners it) insure smooth running.
The fastening clips may be formed in any suitable way oi any a' 'ipropriale material and are attached to the leather or fabric of which the article on which the y are used is made in any suitable manner stu h for example as by stitching as indicated in the drawings.
In the drawings there shown on the shoe a loop or keeper 13 which provides a covering for the bottom end of the slidingkeeper when. in its normal fastening position and forums a guide for said keeper when in the act of fastening and further forms a holding device for retaining the keeper permanentlynttached to the shoe.
As an extra precaution and to prevent any slipping of the sliding keeper from its fastenmg position a catcher holder is provided. This holder is shown in Fig. el as consisting of a spring 14 riveted to the top clip andhaving upon it a pin or pintle 15 adapted to take ina socket 16 on the top clip of the sliding-keeper.

It is easily perceived that when the sliding keeper is withdrawn by means of force applied downwardly by means of the tab 12 the lips 10 of the sliding keeper run in the grooves 7 under the lips S of the clips forming the receiving slides and running off the lowermost clips unfasten the shoe.
