NUT-LOCK.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed August 20, 1906. Serial No. 331.280.
TOaZZ whom it muy concern'- Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM WV. LAUGH- LIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Luxor, in the county of festmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to nut locks, and its primary object is to provide a device of this character of simple and inexpensive construction, especially designed for locking a plurality or series of nuts, and comprising a plate formed with openings conforming to the shape of the nuts, and provided with lugs adapted to be spiked to railway ties.
A further object of the invention is to provide a locking plate for the nuts of railway rails, said plate having openings to receive a Wire, such as is now commonly used on electric roads as a rail bond.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of a rail joint equipped with my improvement, Fig. 2 is atransverse vertical section of the same, Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the improved locking plate detached.
The reference numerals 1 and 2 designate the meetin ends of two railway rails connected by sh bars 3 and the usual bolts 4, secured by nuts 5.
The improved locking plate 6 is formed with openings 7 corresponding in shape and number to the nuts, and having angle bends 8 to adapt the plate to it over the ends of the sh bars. Each end 9 of the locking-plate is formed with an outwardly projecting lug 10, bent downward to snugly fit over the base 11 of therails, and to rest upon the adjacent tie 12.
The plate is formed with an opening 13 at each of its bends S, to accommodate a rail bond 14, which passes through said openings and through openings 15 in the rails, within which the ends of the wire bond are welded.
Each of the lugs 10 is formed with a spikehole 16 to receive spikes 17 for securing the plates to the ties.
It Will be apparent that the plate may be adapted for hexagonal, octagonal or other forms of nuts by forming the openings 7 of the required contour.
The improvement provides a very simple but effectual device for locking all of the nuts of the rail joint, and at the same time supporting the rail bond, and as the locking plate is secured by the spikes 17, it may be realdily applied to and removed lrom the rai s.
vWhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A lock plate for the rail-joints oi railways, comprising an elongated plate resting against the fish-plate of the rail-joint and provided with openings to receive and lock the nuts of the confining-bolts, and having rearwardly bent portions intermediate its ends provided with apertures to receive a rail bond, the end portions of the plate lying in a dii'lerent plane from the body of the plate but parallel therewith and engaging the web ol" the rails beyond the ends ol the fish plates, and integral outwardly-projeeting extensions carried by said ends tting the rail base and railway tie, and provided with openings to receive securinfT spikes.
