To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. HoAG, a citizen of the United States,residing at the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination- Locks, of which the following is aspeciiication.
My invention relates to combination locks which are designed primarily for use in pad lock frames and my objects are to produce such locks cheaply, to provide mechanism for a large number of possible combinations in which the combination necessary to open the lock can be easily changed, and in which the parts are easily accessible for repairs or changes and which cannot be easily picked or broken open.
I attain my objects in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a view of the complete pad lock with the shackle open Fig. 2 a view partly in section of the structure of Fig. l Fig. 3 a like view on the line a a of Fig. 4; Fig. 4 a like view on the line t t of Fig. 2 Fig. 5 a sectional detail view of the combination members on the line t b of Fig. 2,' Fig. 6 a detail view of the combination members and bolt releasing dog; Fig. 7 a view of the mechanism for locking the combination mechanism to the frame taken on the line c c of Fig. 2 and Fig. 8 a detail view of the shackle turning device.
The combination mechanism proper comprises an index plate 1, a dial plate 2, having a knob 3 yand a spindle 4 secured thereto. The index plate has a pair of posts 5 5 extending therefrom and a bridge piece 6 connecting them which acts as a bearing for the inner end of the spindle. The index plate is also provided on its inner face with a plurality of hooks 7, 7, 7, which engage the frame and hold the combination mechanism therein.
A wheel 8 provided with peripheral sockets 9, 9, 9 is secured to the spindle inside of the index plate. Disks 10, 11 and 12, provided with peripheral notches 13, 14 and 15, are loosely mounted on the spindle 4 and are separated from each other by collars 16. The inner end of the spindle carries an indicator 17 by means of which the combination -can be learned and a spring 18 to give the necessary pressure to maintain the parts in frictional engagement. The first disk 10 is provided with a finger 19 adapted to engage any of the sockets 9 in the disk 8 for the purpose of locking the disk 10 and the figures on the dial plate 2 in any desired relation. The disks 10, 11 and 12 are provided with laterally projecting pins adapted to engage each other on the revolution of the spindle. These pins are detachably secured to the disks so thlir relation to the notches may be varied at w1 To learn the combination the combination mechanism must be removed from the frame and the disks turned alternately to the right and left imtil the notches are alined with the indicator, the number on the dial opposite the index plate mark being noted as each notch comes into position.
The pad lock proper comprises the frame 21 provided with the substantially circular opening in its face adapted to receive the combination mechanism. A sleeve 22 is inserted through a hole in the top of said frame and is provided with an internal, sliding, locking sleeve 23 which may be moved up or down by the screw 24. .The outer sleeve is provided with an opening 25 adapted to receive a hook 7, and upon forcing the sleeve 23 downward its lower edge engages the hook and locks the combination mechanism to the frame, the other hooks engaging recesses in the opening in the frame. The upper end of the sleeve carries a boss 26 adapted to engage the free end of the swinging, sliding shackle 27 and is provided with an opening through which the screw operating the locking sleeve is accessible. A second sleeve 28 is fastened in the frame on the other side and is provided with bolt slots 29, 29 on one side and a large opening 30 on the other. large opening has an upwardly extending slot 30 at the top as shown in Fig. 8.
The shackle 27 has an extension 31 adapted to revolve in the sleeve 28 and terminates in a button head 32 which in turn en ages the bolt plate 33. The shackle 27 and s eeve 28 are connected by a helical spring 34, one end of which engages a hole in the shackle extension, and the other end of which is bent into a hook and engages the slot 30, the end being turned into the groove in the bolt plate when assembling as shown in Fig. 3 and then bent out to engage the slot as shown in Fig. 8. The bottom of the bolt plate 33 is connected to the sleeve 28 by a spring 35 which engages a cross bar 36, the tendency of the s ring being to pull the shackle 27 into the ame.

37 which aline with the slots in the sleeve 28. A dog 38; provided with bolts 39; 39 is held away from the bolt plate by the action of the springs shown in Fig. 2. The peripheries oi the combination disks hold the dog 38 and bolts 39 in locked engagement with the slots 29 in the sleeve 2S except at such times as the notches are all alined opposite the dog when the springs drive the bolts forward and out of engagement with the slots.
The head of 'the sleeve 2S has a pin 42 which engages a recess 43 in the shackle when the lock is closed.
ln use the disks are turned by means of the knob and spindle alternately to the right and left until the notches have alined opposite the deg when it moves into them by the action of the small springs around the bolts, the bolts being thereby disengaged from the sleeve. On further turning oi' the spindle the squared side of the notch 13 engages the dog 3S and lifts the shackle until the tree end clears the socket on the other side of the lock when the spring 34 gives the shackle a rotary movement and opens the lock.
To close the lock the shackle is swung about until the free end can be pushed down into the socket and the spindle is 'revolved in a direction opposite to that used in raising the dog. rllhiscauses the inclined side of the notch 13 to drive the dog and bolts into the bolt plate and lock the shackle.
The combination maybe varied at will by altering the position of one or more of the pins on the disks or by moving the disk l0 so that the relative position of its notch and the figures on the dial is changed or both methods may be combined.
One method of securing the sleeve 2S to the frame is illustrated and comprises the lug 40 on the outside. of the sleeve between which and the inner face of the traine a key Ll1 is driven. By this construction the combination mechanism must be removed betore the key is accessible` l claim:-
1. A combination lock comprising an index plate, a dial plate; a spindle projecting therefrom; a wheel provided with peripheral sockets secured to said spindle; a plurality of notched disks loosely mounted on said spindle7 one of which is secured to any desired socket on the wheel; laterally projecting pins secured to each of said notched disks at a predetermined point; a locking bolt 39 and means controlled by said notched disks tor throwing the bolt.
2. A combination lock comprising an index plate, a dial plate; a spindle projecting therefrom; posts extending from the index plate; a bridge connecting said posts and forming a bearing for one end or' said spindle; an indicator 17 on said spindle; a wheel provided with peripheral sockets secured to said spindle; a plurality of notched disks loosely mounted on said spindle one of which is secured to any desired socket on the wheel; a laterally projecting pin secured to each oi said notched disks at a predetermined point; a spring between the bridge and disks to 'maintain the parts in irictional engagement;
a locking bolt; and means controlled by said notched disks for throwing the bolt.
3. A combination pad lock comprising a Jframe provided with an opening in one face adapted to receive the combination mechanism; a shackle movably mounted in the frame; a plate; combination mechanism mounted on said plate; hooks projecting from said plate; a movable sleeve secured in the frame and adapted to engage one of said hooks; and means for moving said sleeve into or out of engagement with said hook whereby the combination mechanism is secured to or released from the frame.

A combination pad lock comprising a frame a sleeve in said trame provided with locking or bolt sockets 29; a shackle movably mounted in the frame; a spindle mounted in the Yframe; a plurality of notched disks on said spindle; a bolt plate carried by the end of the shackle within the trame; a dog and bolts carried by said plate, the bolts being adapted to enter the sockets; means for alining the notches in said disks to receive the dog whereby the bolts will be withdrawn from the bolt holes permitting the lock to be opened.
5. A combination pad lock comprising a frame; a spindle in said frame; a plurality oi' 'roo notched disks on said spindle; a slotted sleeve secured to the Jframe a shackle movably securedin said frame; a bolt plate loosely secured to the end of said shackle within the frame a dog and bolts carried by said plate, the boltsbeing adapted to enter slots in the sleeve; means for alining the notches on the disks opposite the dog for the purpose of withdrawing the bolts from the slots and moving the shackle to open the lock.
6. A combination pad lock comprising a trame; a spindle in said frame; a plurality of notched disks loosely mounted on said spindle; a slotted sleeve secured in said trame; a shackle movably mounted in said sleeve; a spring connecting said shackle andV sleeve whereby the` shackle is revolved on lifting it; a bolt plate loosely secured to said shackle within the sleeve; a dog and bolts carried on said bolt plate the bolts being adapted to enter slots in the sleeve; means for alining the notches on the disks opposite the dog for the purpose of withdrawing the bolts from the slots and moving the shackle.
7. A combination pad lock comprising a frame; a spindle in said Jtrame; a plurality of notched disks loosely mounted on said spindle a slotted sleeve secured in said frame a shackle movably mounted in said sleeve; a

bolt plate loosely secured to the end of the shackle within the frame; a spring secured to the bolt plate and the sleeve to exert a downward pressure on the shackle; a dog and bolts carried by said plate the bolts being adapted to enter the slots in the sleeve; means for alining the notches on the disks opposite the dog for the purpose of withdrawing the bolts from the slots and moving the shackle.
8. A combination pad lock comprising a frame, a spindle in said frame a plurality of notched disks loosely mounted on said spindle; a slotted sleeve secured in the frame; a shackle movably mounted in the sleeve; a spring connecting the shackle and sleeve whereby the 'former is revolved on lifting it; a bolt plate loosely secured to the end of the shackle within the sleeve; a spring secured to the bolt plate and sleeve to exert a down- Ward pressure on the shackle; adog and bolts carried by said plate; the bolts being adapted to enter the slots in the sleeve; means for alining the notches in the disks opposite the dog for the pinpose of withdrawing the bolts from the slotsdsand moving the shackle.
9. A combination pad lock comprising a frame; combination mechanism consisting of an index plate; hooks on said plate; a dial plate; a spindle projecting therefrom a wheel provided with peripheral sockets secured to the spindle; a plurality of notched disks loosely mounted on said spindle; one of which is secured to any desired socket in' the wheel a laterally projecting pin on each of said disks at a predetermined point; a movable sleeve secured to the lrame and adapted toengage a hook on the index plate; means for moving said sleeve into or out of operative engagement with the hook a second slotted sleeve 'lixed to said frame; a shackle movably mounted in said sleeve; a spring connecting said shackle and sleeve whereby a rotary movement is given the former on lifting it; a bolt plate loosely secured to the end of the shackle within the sleeve; a second spring connecting the bolt plate and sleeve whereby a downward pressure is eX- erted on the shackle; a dog and bolts on said plate the bolts being adapted to enter the slots in the sleeve; means for alining the notches in the disks opposite the dog for the purpose ol withdrawing the bolts from the slots and moving the shackle.
