Specification of Letters Patent.

.To tu whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE 1SEVERIN LIED, inspector, a citizen of Norway, residing at Eugeniegade 20, Christiania, Norway, have invented new and useful Improvements in Igniting and Extinguishing Devices for gas- Burners, of which the following is a specifie cation.
My invention relates to that class of gas burners in which gas jets are ignited and extinguished by causing the pressure in the gassupply pipe to rise for a short time and then again to fall, whereby a bell, a piston, a diaphragm or the like is moved in order to feed forward a ratched wheel which causes the supply valve of the gas-jet tO Open or close thereby igniting or extinguishing the jet.
My present invention has for its object to provide an igniting and extinguishing device of a simple construction and safe operation and also one which may be easily inspected and repaired without dismounting other parts than those of the mechanism itself.
In Order to enable the invention to be fully understood I will describe the same by reference to the accompanying drawing.
-1- is the gas supply pipe through which the gas passes by the channel -2, by-pas- Sage -3-, chamber -4, and pipe 5- to the pilot light, which burns at a suitable height in the burner -6-, the gas supply through the orifice -7- to the main jet being closed as long as the valve -8- rests on its' seat -9, drawn downwardly by the weight of the valve stem w10.
Above the pipe 1- is located a diaphragm -11- loaded by plates l2- or otherweights. The said diaphragm is provided with a central stem-13-, which is guidedin the strap -14- and the upper end of which projects into a freely accessible chamber -15-. In this chamber is arranged the ratchet wheel 16- provided with projections or cams -17-. The stem -13- has on its upper end a pivotedpawl -18--, which engages with the wheel -16.
The chamber AI- is closed at its lower end by a Iiexible diaphragm -19-, connected to the lower part of the valve stem -10-, which at its lower and upper parts is controlled by fixed guides -21- and -22- and which stem carries at its lower end a roller 23- resting on the periphery of the cam wheel -17-. l
The pipe -5- is attached to a piece -24- screwed fast to and projecting into the chamber -4-. Said piece has a passage -25 connecting pipe 5 with the interior of chamber Said passage ends inwardly in a seat-26* for a valve -27 forming a part of a lever 2S- pivoted to a lug -29- on the piece -2G-. Ihe tail -30 of said lever is operated by a stopper --31 clamped around the valve stem -10-. The wheels 16, 17'- are carried by a bracket *32h attached to the band .-33-, which in combination with the pipe -3 form the support of the chamber -4-. Said bracket -32- is integral with the guiding strap 14- and is provided with a detaining spring -34- meshing with the ratchet wheel -16-.
In order to prevent dust etc, from entering the chamber -15- this latter is Surrounded by a loose cap -35- preferably of brass.
The Operation of the mechanism is as follows: As soon as the pressure in the gas supply pipe is increased, the diaphragm 11- is lifted, and causes the pawl *18- of the stem -13- to turn the ratchet wheel 1G- one tooth forward, so that the top of one of the cams -17- is moved beneath the roller n3 secured to the valve stem -10-. The valve -8- is thereby slowly raised, thus admitting the gas to the main burner, andthe ilot light ignites the main jet. The pilot lig t will then be extinguished, the tail -30- being released from the stopper -31, whereby the valve -27- under influence of its own weight is moved down to its seat -26- in order to eut olf the gas supply to the pipe -5-. The pressure is then again lowered, whereby the diaphragm 11- together with the stem -13-, is lowered to its normal position, and the pawl -18- engages with the following tooth, the ratchet wheel 16 not being o erated. If the main jet is to be extinguis ed and the pilot light ignited the pressure in the supply pipe is again increased and then lowered, so that the ratchet wheel is moved forward one tooth more and the roller 23- passes into the depression between two of the cam surfaces -17-, the valve -8- being closed at the same time as the gas is admitted to the pipe -5-, whereby the main j et after having ignited the pilot light is extinguished. rlhe parts will then be in the position shown on the drawing.

ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be per-x formed I declare that what I claim is:
1. In an igniting and extinguishing device for gas burners, a casing provided with a flexible diaphragm, a stem provided with a pawl and secured to said diaphragm and a wheel having ratchet teeth for engagement by said pawl and having peripheral curved projections less in number than said ratchet ratchet7 in combination with a main valve for opening and closing an orifice leading to a main jet, and a stem connected with said lvalve and provided with a part engaged by the aforesaid peripheral projections of the ratchet wheel.
3. In an igniting and extinguishing device for gas burners, a casing having a chamber open to atmosphere and with upper and lower flexible diaphragmsI a ratchet wheel in said chamberl and having peripheral curved projections less in number than the teeth of said wheel, a pawl7 carried by the lower diaphragm referred to for engagement with the ratchet wheel, and a main valve for opening and closing an orifice leading to a main jet, said valve connected with the upper diaphragm and in operative relation With said wheel.
4. In an igniting and extinguishing device for gas burners7 a casing having a chamber open to atmosphere and with upper and lower flexible diaphragms, a ratchet wheel in said chamber and' having peripheral curved projections less in number than the teeth of said wheel, a pawlfcarried by the lower diaphragm referred toI for engagement with the ratchet Wheel, :a closed chamber constantly supplied with gas, a main valve for opening and closing an orifice from said closed chamber to a :main burnerI a second valve for opening and closing an oriiice from said chamber to a pilot burner7 and a stem connected with the upper dia.- phragm referred to7 and in operative relation with said wheel, for operating both of said valves. 1 1V In testimony whereof YI have signed 4my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
