PRINTING'DEVIOE.
Y Spaeification'of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1 1, 1907.
Application filed April 9,1906. Serial No. 310,637.
To all whom lit may concern: c it known that I, JosEPII S. DUNOAN, a citizen of the United States, residing, at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinols, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Printing Devices, of which t e fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to that kind of printing device in which a printing plate is carried by a frame ada ted to be stored in accordance with the regu ar card index system.
The devices are usedprincipally for printing addresses and are generally employed by large corporations who send out manybills regularly to the same customers, such as gas companies, electric light companies and telephone com anies. They are also largely *usedby pub ishers and very frequently there is printed along with the addresssome other matter indicating the ledger volume and page upon which the account associated with that particular address is kept or the date on Whic the subscription associated with that particular address will expire. These two examples Will indicate in a general way the particular advantages of'my present Invention, but it will be understood that it can be used in any connection in which it is or may be made available.
Heretofore the figures have been stamped on the plate'bearing the address to print the ledger volume and. page or the subscription "expiration as above mentioned and consequently 1t becomes necessary from tune to with beads 7 and 8. A card 9 is rcmovably time to prepare new plates when the account runs to a new volume or page of the ledger or when a new subscription has been made thus changim the expiration date.
It 18 the object of my present invention to reduce the expense of replacing printing plates under such conditions by providing two plates, one for the address and'one for the additional matter, and constructing a holder for the plates which will permit the piste for printin this additional matter to easily removed and re laced. In the accom anying rawings Figure 1 is a front view 0 the invention, Fig. 2 is a back view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 1s adetail view of the sup lemental plate. The rame 5 is provided at its ends with spacing 'flanges 6 and at its top and bottom .this plate is move held in place beneath the bead 7 and the lips 10 and it is revented from moving endwise to the right y a stop 11. An address rinting plate.12 is removably held in lace elow the card 9 and beneath the bea 8 and the lips 13, 13, these lips being separated from each other by a suitable distance. The supplemental printing plate 14 is arranged beneath'the bead 8 and the lip 13 and between the end stop 15 and the end 12 of the address printing plate 12. A spring locking device 16 of suitable character is arran ed to engage the other end 12 of the address printing plate so that the supplemental ate and the address printing plate 7! printing p will be securely held in place beneath the bead S and lips 13, 13 and between the stop 15 and the spring lock 16.
In the drawings I have'shown the sulpple I? mental printing plate 14 rovided wit the type numerals .13 in icating a ledger V0 ume and 25 indicating a ledger page.
When the account is extended over another, page or to another volume th spring locking device is operated to release the address late which is then shifted to the right until 1ts left hand end is at or about the left hand end of the'lip 13. -The distance between the lips 13. and 13 is greater than the length of the supplemental (printing plate so that when to the right and out of en-' gagement with the lip 13 it can be readily re-' moved from theframe and replaced by a similar late bearing thereon the proper type 1 numera s. Then the address rinting plate is slid back into place and the evice is ready the same result is accomplished by providing a new supplemental plate and the address plate can thus be used l'or many years until it is entirely worn out. For subscription lists a quantity of the supplemental plates can .be prepared in advance to be used with subscription addresses as they come in.
