TUG-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. June 1 1, 1907.
Application filed August 7, 1906. Serial No- 329,607
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORLIE A- Ricn, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Eldred, in the county of MoKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Tug-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of a tug holder designed to be used in connection with shafts of vehicles and particularly as a simple and effective substitute for the tug or trace holding straps which are ordinarily attached to the shafts near the rear ends thereof.
The invention is preferably of metallic or similar substantial construction and when mounted in proper position on the shafts, same will permit of all required movement of the tugs or traces and at the same time perform the usualv function of supporting the same.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the invention, the swinging or movable yoke member being shown in section. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the invention, a holder embodying the same consists mainly of two parts, namely, a curved tang 1 and a movably mounted supporting member in the form of a yoke or bail 2 carried by the tang 1 and adapted to support the trace or tug by direct engagement therewith. In applying the invention, the tang 1 is secured to a shaft or thill indicated at 3, by suitable fastening members 4, the latter being preferably arranged at about right angles to each other in order to increase the substantiality of the connection between the tang 1. and the shaft or thill 3. The trace or tug supporting member which is hereinafter called the yoke member 2, is formed at one end thereof with spaced pivot lugs 5 receiving therebetween a lug 6 at one end of the tang 1, the lugs 5 and 6 being suitably connected by a pivot pin 7.
The spaced sides of the yoke member 2 are connected together at the outer extremities 1 thereof by a roller 8, opposite end portions of which are reduced and journ aled. in suitable bearings in the sides of said yoke member. The roller 8 is adapted to come into direct contact with the trace or tug of the harness, when the latter has been passed through the tug holder and is in operative position relative thereto, the provision of the roller 8 reducing friction incident to the movement of the tug or trace longitudinally under actual conditions of service, the pivotal connection of the yoke member 2 with the tang 1, however, being such as to permit of free pivotal movement of the yoke member up and down to accommodate for such movement ofthe trace or tug which is indicated at 9.
The construction of the holder is extremely simple and the same may be manufactured at a nominal cost by reason of its peculiar structure. The peculiar mounting and cooperation of the device with regard to the trace is possessed of advantages which will. be very obvious to any one versed in the art to which the invention appertains.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A tug holder comprising a tang adapted to be secured to a shaft or thill, and a tug supporting member consisting of a yoke movably mounted upon the tang as specified.
2. In combination, a shaft or thill, a tug holder comprising a tang applied thereto, and a yoke member pivoted at one end to the tang aforesaid and adapted to receive a trace.
3. In combination, a shaft or a thill, a tang secured thereto, and a yoke member adapted to support a trace and pivotally connected at one end with the tang, the opposite end portion of the yoke member having a roller mounted therein for the purpose specified.
4. In combination, a thill or shaft, a tug holder therefor comprising a tang secured thereto, a yoke member arranged to support ORLIE A. RICE. l/Vitnesses:
J. M. BLAKE, R. J. SILsBY.
