MINERS CAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, VVILHELM MAssINe, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Borbeck,- Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Cages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in miners cages and more particularly to an improved safety stop or arresting device for arresting the cage automatically and instantly upon the breaking of the hoisting rope. The arresting device is arranged above the cage and essentially comprises sharppoiuted arresting catches or bars which, upon the breaking of the rope, are, by means of a simple lever system influenced by Weights and strong spiral springs, pressed into the track ledges into which they work themselves deeper and deeper while the cage is still falling.
The accompanying drawing shows how the invention is put into practice.
Figures 1 & 2 are an elevation and plan respectively, of the improved device as mounted on a cage, while Figs. 3 & 4 show the arresting catches of the device, in elevation and plan respectively.
The arresting catches or bars 2 which are movably mounted in strong shells 1 on the top plate of the cage on both sides of the latter facing the track ledges of the cage and provided with upwardly directed sharppointed outer ends as shown in Figs. 3 & 4, are by means of links 3 pivoted with their inner ends to the weight-levers 4 which are centered in a common bearing 5 on the top plate of the cage and connected by means of chains 6 to the drawing-rod 7 of the cage to which the hoisting rope is attached, The levers 4 carry at their free ends heavy weights 8 and are influenced by strong spiral springs 9 which intervene between the levers 4 and an upper frame member 10 of the cage.
Upon the breaking of the hoisting rope, the springs expand and thus press, assisted by the heavy weights 8, the levers downward whereby through the medium of the links 3 the arresting catches or bars 2 are pressed outward into the track ledges so that the cage is almost instantly arrested.
The upwardly directed sharp-pointed ends of the catches or bars 2 allow with their cutting edges a very quick penetration of the bars into the track ledges.
Having fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device for automatically and instantly arresting miners cages upon the breaking of the hoisting rope, comprising in combination with the cage, the hoisting rope, and the track ledges for said cage; shells (1) provided on the top plate of said cage at both sides of the latter facing said track ledges, arresting catches or bars (2) movably mounted in said shells and provided with upwardly directed sharp-pointed outer ends, links (3) pivoted with one end to the inner ends of said catches (2), a bearing (5) fixed on the top plate of said cage, levers (4) commonly centered in said bearing (5) and pivotal] y connected with the free ends of said links, chains (6) connected with one end to said levers (4) and with the other end to said hoisting rope, heavy weights (8) attached to the outer ends of said levers, an upper frame member (10) of said cage, and strong spiral springs (9) placed between said frame member (10) and said levers (4) and adapted together with said weights (8) to press, upon the breaking of said hoisting rope, said levers (4) down Ward and consequently said arresting catches (2) outward into said track ledges, substantially as described and shown.
