CARLTON FOSTER, OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVED DEVICE FOR CANTING 0R TURNING LGS DURING THE PROCESS 0F SAWING THEM INTO LUMBER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,341, dated January 6, 1863.
To all whom it may concern/.e
Be it known that I, CARLTON Fosrnn, of Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and improved device for canting or turning logs when upon the head-blocks or carriages of sawmills and during the process of sawing them into lumber; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which-- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention, takenin the line :v w, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side sectional view of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
-The object of this invention is to obtain a simple, speedy, and eflicient means whereby a single attendant may cant or turn and adjust logs upon a head-block or carriage of a sawmill during the process of sawing them into lumber, work hitherto, in the sawing of large logs, requiring the aid of several hands.
The invention consists in the employment or use of a tackle, operated from the powershaft of the mill and-at the will of the operator or attendant through the medium of friction pulleys or wheels 'and levers, all arranged substantially as hereinafter fully shown and described.
` To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it. u
j A represents the flooring of a saw-mill, and B `the head-blocks on which the log to be sawed is placed and fed to the saw.
C, represents the power-shaft of the mill, or a `shaft connected therewith. This shaft C fhas a pulley, D, upon it, and directly over the pulley D there is a pulley, E, the latter being on a shaft, F, one journal of which is tted in the framing of the mill, and the other journal tted in a lever, G, the fulcrum a of which is in a hanger, b, underneath the llooring A.
`The inner end of lever G rests on a lever,
CH, which is also underneath the flooring A and hasits fulcrum c in a hanger, d. The
outer end of lever H has a cord or rope, I,
L, attached to it, the lever G, and
passes underneath a pulley,f, below the hooring A, and then extends up through the hooring and passes over pulleys g g ina horizontal bar, M, which is also attached to the upright K, said chain passing through a block, N, and having its end secured to the end of bar M, as shown at a* in both gures. The block N has a hook, Q, attached to it by a few links, b". l i
The operation is as follows: The log to'be canted or turned is shown in red in both iigures. The hook Q is applied to the under side of the log by the right hand of the attendant or operator, and the cord I is pulled with the left hand. The pulling of cord I actuates the levers G E, and brings the pulley E in contact with D, the shaft F being there-v by rotated, and the chain L wound upon it, and the hook Q is raised and the log turned.
An essential feature of this invention is the arrangement and relative position of the lever G and chain L, by which the tension or strain oi' the chain is made to-act upon lever G, in line, or nearly so, with its fulcrum a, and therefore does not affect the free or perfect operation of the lever G. If the strain or tension of the chain L were downward or 11pward from shaft F, the lever G would require to be loaded, or have weights or springs appliedV to it to resist the action of the chain under tension in turning .the log, but by my arrangement the lever G requires no supplemental or extraneous fixtures or appliances of any kind to keep it in proper position to be acted upon by lever H.
I do'not claim any of the within-described parts separately or in themselves considered; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi The hook Q, attached to a tackle, the chain L of which is connected to an adjustable shaft, F, operated through the medium of friction pulleys or wheels DE, thrown in and v out of gear or connectedpand disconnected by means of levers G H, so arranged that the former one, G, will have its fulcrum a in line or in the same plane with the tension or strain of chain L on shaft F, and for the purpose set forth.
