COMBINED ASH AND GARBAGE FiECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed November 1, 1906. Serial No. 341,526.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH KoLoUoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ash and Garbage Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.-
My invention relates to improvements in a combination receptacle for ashes, garbage and refuse paper including a mechanism for screening the ashes.
The construction of my invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a front view of the screen basket removed from the ash receptacle. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the screen basket removed from the. ash receptacle.
. Like parts are identified by the same reference figures throughout the several views.
1 is an ash receptacle, 2 a garbage receptacle, 3 a paper receptacle and 4 a screen basket which is used for sifting the ashes and separating the same from the coal. The paper and ash receptacle are separated by a vertical partition indicated by dotted lines as shown in Fig. 1. The screen basket is sus pended at its respective sides from the parallel rods 5, 5, on which rods the screen is adapted to be supported when given a reciprocating movement for the purpose of shaking its contents and separating the ashes from the coal therein. Motion is communicated to the basket 4 from the exterior by the shaking rod 6 which is provided with an operating handle 7.
8 is a hopper through which ashes are discharged into the screen basket 4 preparatory to shaking the same.
9 is an aperture through which the basket is inserted and withdrawn from the ash receptacle. The rear ends of the screen supporting rods extend through the rear wall 10 of the ash receptacle and are retained in place by a nut or head 11 while the front ends extend forwardly through the front aperture 9 of the receptacle and are respectively turned toward the right and left and secured to the front wall of the receptacle upon the respective sides of said aperture by rivets 12, 12, as shown in Fig. 1. The rear end of the screen basket is provided on its respective sides with eye bolts 13, 13, which respectively engage the supporting rods 5 while the front end of said screen basket is provided at its respective sides with notched brackets 14, 14, which also respectively engage the supporting rods 5, whereby the screen basket is uniformly supported at its respective ends. 15, 15, are notches or recesses for the reception of said supporting rods 5, whereby when desirous to remove the screen basket from the ash receptacle said supporting brackets 14 will be free to be drawn forwardly past the front ends of said supporting rods and the front end of the screen basket disengage therefrom, whereby it will be obvious that when the ashes have been sifted from the screen basket, such coal as remains in the basket may be drawn forwardly with the basket when the front end of the basket may be inclined downwardly as shown in Fig. 2 and discharge in a coal scuttle. It will be tmderstood that the eyebolts 13 connected with the rear end of the basket surround their supporting rods and cannot be withdrawn therefrom, while said eyebolts are free to turn in their bearings in said screen basket and permit the basket to be inclined from the horizontal position shown, to that indicated in dotted lines, in Fig. 2, while the screen supporting brackets 14 are so constructed as to be freely disengaged from the supporting rods as the basket is drawn forwardly.
16 is a door for closing the aperture 9 of the ash receptacle and the same is preferably hinged at its lower side to said ash receptacle at the upper side of said aperture, whereby it is obvious that when screening the ashes the door may be closed to prevent the dust from escaping through the aperture. The front end 17 of the screen basket is preferably inclined outwardly and upwardly, whereby when the basket is suspended in the vertical position from its rear end, its contents will freely flow therefrom.
18 represents a coal scuttle in position t receive the contents of the screen basket.
19 is a shelf for supporting the coal scuttle from the side of the receptacle.
20 is a platform which extends beneath the ash receptacle 1, garbage receptacle 2 and paper receptacle 3 and serves as a sup port and bottom for all of said receptacles. The front wall of the paper receptacle serves as a wall for the garbage receptacle, while the same platform serves as a bottom for both of said receptacles. The garbage receptacle is provided with a door 21 which is secured at as a stop to limit the rearward movement of the covers 24 as they are raised. The ash receptacle is provided with an end door 28 which is secured at one side to the wall of the receptacle by hinges 29 and the same is pro vided with a latch or lock 30 by which it is locked in its closed position in the ordinary manner. The paper receptacle 3 is also provided with a similar door 29 of ordinary construction which is supported from the vertical walls of the receptacle by hinges 31, 31 and is locked in its closed position by the latch 32 which engages in the catch 33 whereby it is held in its closed position.
34 is a faucet through which the liquid contents of the garbage may be drawn from the garbage receptacle.
35 is a removable wooden bottom which is supported from the metallic bottom and serves as a shield to prevent the metallic bot tom from being cut or broken when removing the garbage.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a device of the described class the combination with an ash receptacle of a screen basket, a pair of horizontal basket supporting rods, said rods being connected at one end to the rear walls of said ash receptacle and extending forwardly therefrom through an aperture formed in the wall of said receptacle for the passage of said screen basket, said front ends being respectively curved toward the right and left and secured to the vertical front walls of said ash receptacle upon therespective sides of said aperture, said screen basket being provided at its rear end witha pair of eyebolts engaging said. horizontal supporting rods and at its front end with a pair of brackets provided with open recesses for engagement with said supporting rods, whereby the front end of said basket may be drawn forward past the front end of said rods and inclined downward for the purpose of discharging its contents.
2. The combination of an ash receptacle, a garbage receptacle and a receptacle for dry refuse material, a platform common to all of said receptacles a faucet connected with said garbage receptacle, a reciprocating screen basket located in said ash receptacle, means for operating said screen basket from the exterior, means for drawing forward and disengaging the front end of said screen basket from its supporting rods, inlet hoppers con nected with the covers of said ash receptacle and dry refuse receptacle, doors for closing the end of said ash receptacle and a receptacle for dry refuse material and covers. for closing the mouths of said hoppers and said arbage receptacle, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH KOLOUCH.
