Description

' To all whom 'it may concern i anita @er/tw JACOB TAYLOR, OF PETROLEUM CENTRE, PENNSYLVANIA. Letters .Patent No. 85,622, dotted .Tarma/ry 5, 1869.
IMPRO'V'ED OIL-WELL CfIIEANER.A
The Schedule referred to in -these Letters Patent and making part: of the sme.
Be it known that I, JACOB TAYLOR, of Petroleum Centre, in the county of Venango, and State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented a new and improved Device for Clearing OilVVells; and I do hereby declare thatv the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, yreference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication.
Figure l represents a side elevation of -my improved well-clearing apparatus. v
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, of the same.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section thereof, taken 'on the pla-ne of the line4 :z: x, iig. 2Q
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l
This invention has for' its object to produce a device by'which the cracks and crevices of oil-wells can be scraped open when they are clogged by parafiine or other impurities.
Hitherto this clearing was done by means of benzine,of which many barrels had, to be poured into the well to make it dissolve the paraine.` This was rather an expensive process, as fromfive to ten barrels of benzine had to be used.
Another way was to remove the tubing and shafting from the Well, and to let down a so-called scraper, by means of which the pores and crevices could be opened. But the delay occasioned by the removal and replacing of the machinery, and by the cleaning-process, was so considerable that it was avoided as long as possible, and consequently the wells becameless valuable, as they could not constantly be kept clean.
' My invention consists in the application of a cleaner, which always remains in the well, and which can be used every day so as to constantly keep it in workingorder.
A, in the drawing, represents 'the sides of. an ordinary or suitable oil-well;
B is the casing, and
O, the seed-bag of the same.
D is the pipe, through which the oil is pumped by means of suitable mechanism.
In the lower part of the well,` under the casing B, is suspended my cleaning-device. This consists of a tube, E, with a, leather or other funnel-shaped mouth-piece, a.
It is, by means of a chain or rope, b, suspender] from the upper part of the machinery, and within its lower part is secured another tube, c, which has an expanded lower end, as is clearly shown in fig. 2.
On-the outside of the tube E .are fastened springs d d, which expand themselves against the sides of the well, and to which scraping-tools e e may be fastened, as shown.
Vhen, by means of the rope or chain, the tube E is let up and down, the springs' and tools will scrape the sides of the well, so as to clean it of all impurities, and to open the crevices and cracks.
Vhen benzine or other liquid is poured, in small quantities, into the casing B, it will iiow down in it, and thence into the tube E, on the inner side of which it will flow down, so as to come into the annular space between E and o. By the expanded lower end of the tube c, the benzine will be directed against the sides of the Well, and the same will thereby be moistened, without requiring the Whole well to be illed with ben- The device is thus a combined scraper and moistener, and does, as it always remains in the Well, not require the removal of any machinery when it is to be used.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described apparatus for cleaning oil-wells, when composed of the tube E, spring-Scrapers d e, and inner tube c, all made and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
The above specication of my invention signed by me, this 10th day of November, 1868'.
Witnesses: J AGOB TAYLOR.
ALFRED ARNOLD, JACOB ROSENBERG.
