APPLICATION FILED JUNE 7, 1906.
EDMUND DONALD ROBERTS, JR, OF DETROIT,MICHIGAN.
PROCESS OF MAKING A DESIGN PAINTING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
Application filed June '7. 1906. Serial No. 320,630.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND T)ONALD ROBERTS, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Making a Design Painting; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same,
This invention relates to a process of making a design or sketch in black and white, or in colors, for lithographic or other reproduction.
The object of the invention is to produce a painted design or sketch for reproduction in black and white, or in colors, by a process which requires but a comparatively short time, and enables a painting of superior merit to be produced at a comparatively small cost, at the same time preserving all of the fine detail and correctness of drawing incident to photographing from life, or to photographic reproduction of any subject.
The above object is attained by my process which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and described as follows 2- Afigure is photographed from life, or a subject is photographed from a painting or drawing and a photographic print a made from the developed negative upon platinum or other sensitized material that will print properly; the photographic print is then mounted upon a backing b and the entire surface of the paper or material upon which the print is made, excepting that portion which is to be treated by water colors is sized with a suitable sizing 0, such as glue or white shellac. By employing said sizing the oil paint of which the background is made, is prevented striking through or in any manner affecting the paper or the photographic print.
The back ground is then painted in oil at over the sized surface to produce a landscape, wooded scene, marlne view, or other eflect desired, and the photographic print is colored,
in whole or in part, by water colors 0. Be-
cause of the fact that water colors are transparent, the detail of the photographic print is not destroyed, nor covered up in their use,
enabling the attainment of a naturalness in form and feature, and a correctness as to drapery and the distribution of lights and shades unattainable by the use of oil colors, for the reason that oil colors, being opaque, would, to a great extent, cover up the photo graphic detail and destroy the naturalness of posture and expression, which the photograph presents, besides there is an additional advantage in the use of water colors for the reason that they may be much more quickly and satisfactorily applied to produce the color effect desired upon the photographic subject. It will now be evident, that, by eniploying water colors on a photographic print wherein it is desired to preserve the photographic detail, and by painting in oil the other parts of the sketch or design not treat ed by the water colors, a painted sketch for reproduction in black and white, or in colors, may be produced of a superior character at a greatly reduced cost.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1- 1. The method of producing a sketch or painting which consists in photographing a subject, printing from the photograph upon suitable material, mounting the print, p ainting in oil the surface of the sketch not occupied by the subject, and painting the photographic subject in transparent colors.
2. The process of producing a sketch or drawing for reproduction which consists in photographing a subject, printing from the photograph upon sensitized material, sizing the surface of said. material around said subject, painting in oil upon the sized surface, and painting the photographic subject in water colors.
3. A painting consisting .of a photographed subject, colored in whole or in part, by the application of transparent pigment, and a back ground surrounding said subject painted in oil.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
