Specification of 'Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
Application led March 14,1906. Serial No. 305,940.
fo @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, MEYER MARGOLIN and ALEKs KARRON, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to grates for use in cooking stoves, cooking ran es and other heaters of various kinds and c asses; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is particularly designed for use for the purpose of starting a coal, wood or other fire, but which may also be employed if desired as a fire grate or burner in stoves, ranges and otherheaters employing gas, vapor, oil or similar substances as a heat producing medium.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following speciiication, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which 1- Figure l is a plan view of a circular grate involving our invention and showing the same mounted in a iire-boX or casing, the latter being in section and a part of the grate attachments or connections being also in section Fig. 2 a plan view of a rectangular grate made according to our invention; Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 0f Fig. 1; and, IFig. 4 a partial section on the line 4 4 of iig. 1.
In the practice of our invention as shown in Figs. l, 3 and 4, we provide a grate a which is circular in form and which is composed of a bottom member a2 and top member a3, said parts or members being secured together by means of bolts or screws or in any desired manner as shown at a4. The grate a comprises an annular rim portion and transversely arranged bars a5, and the top and bottom portions 0,2 and a3 in this respect are formed in the same manner, but the bottom portions a of the bars a5 are preferably of less transverse width than the top portions a7 of said bars, and the bottom portions of said bars are hollow, and formed in the top edges thereof are ports or passages a8 through which, in practice, the gas or other medium escapes.
The bottom part of the annular outer porare prevented from entering the ports or pas-i sages as through which the gas escapes.
In Fig. l, we have shown the grate a mounted in a casing b, which may form the base of a stove or heater or the iire boX thereof, and the grate is provided with trunnions c which pass through suitable bearings b2 with which the casing b is provided, and one of the trunnions c is tubular in form as shown at c2 and the pipe d is connected therewith through one4 of the bearings b2 as clearly shown in Fig. l and the gas or other material to be burned in the grate a is supplied to said grate through the pipe d.
In Fig. 2, we have shown a modication of the grate a which is similar in all respects to said grate a, except in the form thereof, the grate shown in Fig. 2 being angular or rectangular in form.
It will be observed that the bars of the grate or the spaces therein are all in communication, and all in communication with the space within the outer or frame portion of the grate, and gas or other material admitted through the pipe d is free to circulate around the grate and through the various bars thereof.
Our improved grate is particularly adapted for use as a fire starter in cooking stoves, ranges and other heaters of various kinds and classes which employ coal or wood as the main heating medium, but it will be apparent that our improved grate may also be used as a gas, or vapor, or oil burning grate in stoves, ranges and other heaters which em- IOO ploy these materials only for heating pur l poses.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A grate comprising a frame and parallel bars, said frame and bars being composed of top and bottom members secured together, the bottom members of the bars being hollow to form gas passages and the frame being provided with a passage which communicates IIO With the passages in said bars, the top 1porl In testimony that We claim the foregoing 1o tions of the bottom members of said ars as our invention We have signed our names in bein provided With side ports or passages presence of the subscribing Witnesses this Whc are covered and protected by the top 12th day of March 1906.
members of said bars, and the inner Walls of MEYER M ARGOLIN. the Jframe being also provided with ports or ALEKS KARRON. passages which communicate with the spaces Witnesses:
