Description

UNITED STATES PATET OFFTQE.
MATTHEW MORTON AND HENRY E. MORTON, OF MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, MICHIGAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
Application filed March 10,1906. Serial No. 305,259.
To 6117/ 1071 0721 if 'HMZ/Z/ concern:
Be it known that we, MATT EW MORTON and HENRY E. MORTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Muskegon Heights, county of Muskegon, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in lv ork-Holders for Shapers or Planers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention has reference to a work holding device for finishing the exterior of a driving box for locomotives.
Our present invention is designed more particularly to be used in connection with a draw out shaper or planer for finishing driving boxes on locomotives, embodied in an application for United States Letters Patent,
filed by us May 15, 1905, Serial Number Our invention consists of the construction combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of mechanism for holding the work upon a shaper or planer. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the mechanism in a different position, certain elements being omitted. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the rear of one of the plates.
with the increase in the size of locomotives now commonly employed, it has been found necessary to adopt steel driving boxes, which have been hard to shape by means hitherto employed.
Our invention is carried out'as follows:
a indicates a ram of a draw out shaper or planer carrying a cutting tool I), and c indicates a backing frame of the shaper upon which our work holding device is located.
A driving box to be shaped is indicated at (Z. A plate e rests upon the base of the machine and is movable thereupon, said plate being planed off on a taper extending each way from a given point intermediate the ends of the plate, as indicated at f and g on the contact side. A center bolt it passes transversely through the point from which the plate is tapered. indicated at i. Additional clamping bolts g and I pass transversely through the said plate on either side of the point.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the taper is shown slightly exaggerated for greater clearness. Three slots are also shown planed through one side of the plate indicated at 1, 7c and Z, a suflicient depth to receive corresponding parallel strips indicated at m, n and p. When said strips are in normal position the front side of the plate will be in perfect alinement with the ram. The object of this construction is so that after a parallel out has been taken said strips may be removed, and by tightening the inner bolt the plate may be drawn around to relieve a portion of the surface tapering, and so that by loosening the bolt 9 and tightening the outer bolt r, the plate may be placed at an angle to relieve a portion of the surface tapering in an opposite direction. The object of relieving a portion of the tapering sides is to permit the box, in passing around a curve to swivel slightly in the jaws of the locomotive frame. Clamping devices 8 are secured upon the work by means of the bolts h, g and 1".
It will be seen that the plate 6 is at one end of the driving box, the clamping devices s being located at the opposite end thereof. A stop if is preferably arranged between the upperpart of the driving box and a saddle a connected with the frame of the machine Said stop may consist of a set screw, the saddle it being provided with a block 4), said screws being adjustable and the driving box contacting therewith. We prefer to use our ordinary cutter or shaper head carrying a cutting tool I), such, for example, as is embodied in a patent granted to us September 10, 1901, 682,218.
' l/Vhat we claim as our invention is:
1. A work holding device for a draw out shaper comprising a backing frame, a clam ing plate movable upon the base of t e shaper and tapered each way from a given point intermediate the ends of the plate on the side adjacent to said frame, oppositely arranged clamping devices to engage the work between said clamping devices and said plate, a central clamping bolt passing transversely through the said point of the clamping plate normally at a right angle to the plate, and additional clamping bolts passing transversely through the plate on either side of said point normally at a right angle to the plate whereby the clamping plate may be drawn around at either side of the point toward the frame for the purpose described.
2. A work holding device for a draw out shaper comprising a backing frame, a clam ing plate movable upon the base of tlie shaper tapered each way from a point inter mediate the ends of the plate on the side thereof toward the frame, oppositely arranged clamping devices to engage the work between the clamping devices and said. plate, clamping bolts passing transversely through the said plate, and removable strips located between said plate and backing frame for the purpose described.
3. A Work holding device for a draw cut I shaper comprising a backing frame, a clamping plate movable upon the base of the shaper, said plate tapered each way from a given point intermediate the ends of the plate on the one side thereof, oppositely arranged clamping devices to engage the work between the clamping devices and said plate, a central clamping bolt passing through the said point of the plate, additional clamping bolts passing through the plate on either side of said oint, said plate provided on the tapered 'ace thereof with a central slot intermediate the ends thereof, and with additional slots on either side of the central slot, and removable strips located in said slots for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
