Description

No. 855,438. PATENTED JUNE 4 .1907.
H. P. VOGEL. 4
' FIRE LIGHTER.
APPLICATION FILED DEG. 27, 1904.
TO this end HERMANN PAUL VOGEL, OF NEUKIROHEN,
PATENT OFFICE.
ORIMMITSOHAU, GERMANY.
FIRE-LIGHTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
Application filed December 27,1904. Serial No. 238.554.
To all whom it nut concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN PAUL Vo- GEL, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at N eukirchen, Orimmitschau, Germany, have invented new and useful ImprovementsinFire-LightingDevices,ofwhich the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an absolutely reliable firelighting device for use in any fireplace and adapted to permit free access of air to the igniting or flammable body and the combustible charge so as to obviate the former becoming choked and extinguished by the said charge. With this object in view, I provide the said flammable body with a protecting cradle which also carries means for setting light thereto.
The annexed drawing shows two forms of my fire-lighting device, and Figure 1, is an a b c and d, being the sides, ends and top and pieces of a cradle or frame secured together by gluing, nailing or wiring. The cradle is made of such size as to permit of a flammable body 6 being placed Within it. The flammable body consists of wood fiber and other appropriate waste material combined with resin or other highly inflammable substances immune from evaporation and the same is here secured to the inner side of the part b by slightly warming the resinous composition e. The cradle further contains means for igniting the flammable body 6. a match or lucifer f is inserted through a slot or hole 9 in the cradle in such a manner as to cause the head 7' of the match to rest on a rou hened igniting surhe parts of the cradle in the vicinity of the flammable body 6, and such match is provided with a handle 71, ad-
vantageously of wire, which protrudes from I the cradle and allows of the match being drawn smartly over the igniting surface for i the ignition of the said flammable body 6.
The complete cradle is placed in the firegrate and covered with a charge of coal.
' It may be mentioned that the cradle should be sufliciently strong to support the char e of coal or like combustibles and also to wit stand the destructive or consuming action of the fire till the combustibles are properly burning in order that it may prevent the latter from choking the fire-lighter through want of air.
The modified form of fire-lighter according to Figs. 3 and 4 is obtained by fixing four longitudinal pieceskof wood having any convenient cross section and length, to a cross Z at each end. The said cross can be made of wood or of iron strips and the parts may advantageously be nailed together. The flammable body 6 is compressed between the longitudinal pieces it and the means for setting light to it are the same as previously described and are marked with the same letters of reference.
What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is z- 1. A flre-lighter, comprising four longitudinal bars of wood secured together by end pieces, an internal flammable and igniter as set forth.
2. A fire-lighter, consisting of four longitudinal bars, a cross of metal strips at each end, a central flammable body, a match secured to a wire handle, a slot in one bar for the reception of said match and astriking surface attached to an opposite bar, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMAN N PAUL VOGEL.
