To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN IV. NEWBERY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of- Brcoklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Marbling Paper, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to a device which may be embodied in a machine for marbling paper, the object being to simplify the construction and provide a machine which will meet all of the requirements of devices of this nature and which will produce the desired results in a simple and efficient manner.
In carrying out my invention and embodying the principal features thereof in an operative device I have provided a circular revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution fective manner.

Acarriage which is designed to hold the roll of paper to be marbleized is positioned over said tank. This carriage is provided with a mechanism for unrolling the paper and bringing successive portions of the web into contact with the coloring film carried by the sizing solution as the tank is revolved. A drying device may also be provided on said carriage and the web of paper passed through the same after having` taken up the colors and from thence to a roll where it is finally rewound.
Various means may be used for distributing the coloring matter over the sizing solution. I have found that a device comprising a rotating brush and a supply roll operated in connection with the same positioned over the tank containing the sizing solution will distribute the coloring matter upon the surface of the sizing solution and will produce the desired results in a very simple and ef- The construction of this portion of the device will be more fully described hereinafter.

The device herein shown and described illustrates an embodiment of my invention in a practical machine for the purpose set forth Which I have found after numerous experi- I do not confine myself, however, to the exact details of construction or to the design and arrangement of the several parts of the machine herein shown and described, as it Will be evident that various changes may be made therein without departing from the scope of my invention.
Vhat I claim is:
l. In a marbling machine, the combination of a revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, means for revolving said tank in a horizontal plane, means for distributing coloring matter over said solution, and means for passing the paper successively into contact With the color film carried b y said sizing solution.
2. In a marbling machine, in combination, a tank for containing sizing solution, said tank being mounted so as to be revolved in a horizontal plane, about a central point, means for revolving said tank, ay carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, means for distributing coloring matter over said sizing solution,` and means for passing the paper successively into contact with the color film carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, in combination, a circular tank for containing sizing solution, said tank being mounted so as to be revolved in a horizontal plane, about its center, means for revolving said tank, a carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, means for distributing coloring matter over said sizing solution, and means for passing the paper successively into contact With the color film carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, in combination, a tank for containing sizing solution, said tank being mounted so as to be revolved ina horizontal plane, about a central point, means for'revolving said tank, a stationary carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, means for distributing coloring matter over said sizing solution, and means for passing the paper successively into contact with the color lm carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, means for maintaining a constant amount of said sizing solution in said tank, a carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, means for revolving said tank in a horizontalplane, means for distributing coloring matter over said solution, and means for passing the paper successively into contact With the color film carried by said solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a reservoir adapted to contain surplus solution, a pumping device adapted to transfer said solution to said reservoir, a supply pipe leading from said reservoir for maintaining a constant amount of said sizing solution in said tank, means for revolving said tank, in a horizontal plane, a carriage for carrying the paper to be marbleized, means for distributing coloringmatter over said solution, and means for passing the paper successively into contact with the color film carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a reservoir adapted to contain surplus solution, a pumping device adapted to transfer solution to said reservoir, a plurality of supply pipes leading from said reservoir for maintaining a constant amount of said sizing solution in said tank, means for revolving said tank, in a horizontal plane, a carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, means for distributing coloring matter over said solution, and means for passing the paper successively into contact With the color film carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a rack adapted to revolve IOO with said tank, means vfor revolving said tank and rack, in a horizontal plane, a rotatable brush adapted to distribute coloring matter over said sizing solution having a gear attached thereto adapted to operatively engage said rack, a carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, and means for passing the paper successively into contact With the color film carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of arevoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a rack adaptedto revolve With said tank, means for revolving said tank and rack, in a horizontal plane, a rotatable brush and roll driven by means of said rack and adapted to distribute coloring matter over said sizing solution, a carriage adapted' to carry the paper to be marbleized, andA means for passing the aper successively into contact with the co or film carried by I said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a circular revoluble .tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a circular rack adapted to revolve With said tank, meansior revolving said tank and rack, in a horizontal plane, a rotatable brush operated by said rack and adapted to distribute coloring mate ter over said sizing solution, a carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, and means for passing the paper successively into Contact with thcfcolor `lilin carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a receptacle adapted to receive the overflow solution from said tank, means for revolving said tank, in a horizontal plane, means for distributing coloring inatter over the solution in said tank, and means ior passing the aper successively into contact with the co or iilni carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a circular revolving tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a circular receptacle adapted to receive the overiiow solution -froni said tank, means for revolving said tank, in a horizontal plane, means for dis-4 tributing coloring matter over the solution in said tank, and means for passing the pa er successively into contact with the color iilin carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a circular revoluble tank adapted tol contain a sizing solution, a circular receptacle adapted to be revolved With said tank and to receive the overiiow solution therefrom, means for revolving said tank and receptacle, means for distributing coloring matter over the solution in said tank, and means for passing the paperV successively into contact with the color iilm carried by said sizingsolution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, a driving shaft operatively connected With said tank and adapted to revolve the same, in a horizontal plane, means for distributing coloring inatter over said solution, and means for passing the colo m carried by said sizing solution.

In a' marbling machine, the combination of a revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a vertical driving shaft centrally located and operatively connected With said tank to revolve the same, in a horizontal plane, a carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, means for distributing coloring matter over said solution, and means for passing the paper successively pager successively into contact with the a r 'l into contact with the color iilm carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a circular revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, means for revolving said tank, in a horizontal plane, means for distributing coloring matter over said solution, a support positioned under said tank, a carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, and means for passing the palper successively into contact with the co tion of a circular revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, means for revolving said tank, in a horizontal plane, means for distributing coloring matter over said solution,.a plurality of supports positioned under said tank, a carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, and means for passing the paper successively into contact With the color iilin carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a circular revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, means for revolving said tank, in a horizontal plane, means for distributing coloring kmatter over said solution, a plurality of supports positioned under said tank each provided With a roller forming a bearing for retaining said tank in a level position, carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, and means for passing the paper successively into contact With the color iilm carried by said sizing solution.
21. In a marbling machine, the combination of a revoluble tank adaptedi to contain a sizing solution, a centrally located shaft opy IOO IIO
eratively connected to said tank for revolving the same, in a horizontal plane, a reservoir surrounding said shaft and adapted to supply sizing solution to said tank, means for 'distributing coloring matter over said solution in said tank, a carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, and means for passing the paper successively into contact with the color iilm carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a support for said tank, means for revolving said support and tank, in a horizontal plane, means for distributing coloring matter over said solution in said tank, a carriage adapted to carry the paper to be marbleized, and means for passing the palper successively into contact with the co or ilm carried by said sizing solution.

In a marbling machine, the combination of a revoluble tank adapted to contain a sizing solution, a vertical shaft for revolving said tank, in a horizontal plane, a reservoir carried by said shaft, pipes leading from said reservoir to said tank, an overiiow receptacle positioned so as to receive overiiow solution from said tank, pipes leading from said overflow receptacle to a receptacle carried by said shaft, means for transferring the solution from said last named receptacle to said reservoir, means for distributing coloring matter over said sizing solution, a carriage for carrying the paper to be marbleized, and means for passing the paper successively into Contact with the coloring ilm carried by said sizing solution.

A color distributing device adapted for use with amachine for marbling paper, said device having a receptacle for receiving the coloring material, a rotating brush adapted to distribute said coloring material over a sizing solution, a roller adapted to carry the coloring material from said receptacle to said brush, a perforated cover through which said coloring material is strained before entering said receptacle, a regulator for controlling the amount oitl coloring matter carried to said brush, and means Jfor rotating said brush and roller.
