BOILER.
Patented June 4,1907.
No. 855,446. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 2, 1907. Serial No 350,501.
To Ml whom it may concern: reference indicate corresponding parts in all Be it known that 1,,HARRY DEL MAR, of the views.
the city, county, and State of New York, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a have invented a new and Improved F1rel boiler showing myimprovements. Fig. 2 1S Tube and ater-Tube Boiler, of which the a sectional plan on the line 2. 2 of Fig. 1, and following is a full, clear, and exact descrrp- Fig. 3 is a sectional plan on the line 3. 3 of. tion. i Fi 1.
My invention relates to improvements in l The design of the boiler is not very ma fire tube and water tube boilers, and the obterial, and l have ject of my invention is to produce a combinatrates the use of tion boiler possessing both the fire tube and l and water tubes,
water tube characteristics, which is exceedin many other ways without departing from ingly compact, has the principal fire tubes the principle of the invention, as will be submerged, has a series of water tubes and readily seen from the description which folheaders surrounding the main drum in such a lows.
shown a design which illusthe combination fire tubes but these can be arranged way as to utilize the he at from the products The boiler has a main water drum 10, which of combustion to the best advantage, and merges at the top into a larger and partly surwhich in general is a quick and efiicient rounding drum 11, and obviously the relasteam making boiler. By combining the tive height of these parts can be changed to fire tubes and water tubes in a boiler, the wasuit varying circumstances. The drum 11 ter tubes will give out before the drum can has a depressed central portion 12, the botburst in the event of carelessness, or for any tom of which forms the top of the drum 10, other cause beyond the control of the man in 1 so that the fire tubes 13 which extend longicharge of the boiler. A boiler of this type, tu'dinally through the drum 10 can be contoo, can be made to cover more ground space stantly submerged. Any number of these and less height than the ordinary vertical tubes 13 can be used, and they extend the boiler, and besides greater power can be put full length of the drum 10, as shown in Fig. 1. in a small space, and steam can be produced Return fire tubes 14 are also arranged in the quicker and of a drier quality than with the ordinary vertical boiler. 1 top of the boiler to the circular flue 15, from Another object of my invention is to pro- 1 which connection vcan be made with the stack duce a boiler having the gases of combustion at any desired point and in any usual way. which pass through the first set of fire tubes 1 The boiler is provided with a suitable casing returned in an opposite direction through the 16, the walls of which merge into the outer set of fire tubes in the annular steam drum, wall of the flue 15. It will be seen that the hot gases will rise through the tubes 13, be deflected by the top of the casing 16, and pass down the tubes 1 1. It will also be observed that this structure makes a complete fire tube boiler, but I prefer to use the sur rounding water tubes and connections which will be described below.
Radiating from the lower part of the drum 10 butnot quite all around it, are tubes 17 and 18, which are staggered so that the tubes 18 will not be in vertical alinement with the tubes 17, and these connect the drum 10 with headers 19, which latter can be of any approved form either straight or serpentine. I The reason for leaving a part of the drum l blank so far as the arrangement of tubes and fire tube element and prevent thewaste of heat which results from a direct course through the fire tube system. The water tube system has a set of baffle plates to direct the course of the gases, and besides the tubes can be staggered so as to break up the gases and utilize the heat .to the best advanta e.
With these ends in view, and with the general object of producing a boiler which will make steam economically, my invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specificaheaders is concerned, is to afford firing space tlon, in which similar letters and figures of as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The headers 19 drum 11, and extend from the space-in the JERSEY, A CORPORATION- 2, so that ready access can be had to the waconnect by nipples with the mud drums 21, which as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 8, form preferably segments of a circle, and the I drums connect by tubes 22 with the drum 10. 1 Above the lower headers and above the tubes 17 and 18 are series of tubes 23 and 24 which I are also staggered, and which extend from the upper part of the drum 10 to the headers 25, and these, which may be of any approved type, entirely surround the drum 10, being preferably in a circular group as shown in Fig. 2. The headers 25 are, however, preferably just inside the headers 19, so that the tops of the latter can be easily reached, and I the headers 19 should have caps 26 on the I top as shown in Fig. 1, and by removing the caps, and by having the headers oflset as i shown, one is enabled to reach down through the headers 19 to clean the nipples 20, or to do any work thereon. Opposite the several radiating water tubes, and in the outer walls i of the headers, removable caps 27 can be arl ranged as shown on one of the headers in Fig. I
ter tubes.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I provide a very simple and highly eificient. boiler, which is a combination of fire tubes and water tubes, that the hot gases of combustion will rise through the tubes 13 and pass down and out through the tubes 14, while a part of the hot gases will also rise between the several water tubes, and so I provide a boiler having water tube and fire tube 1 features in avery compact form and in a manner to economize heat.
It will be obvious that the design can be changed materially without affecting the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A boiler of the kind described, comprising a main drum having fire tubes extending longitudinally through it, water headers placed around the main drum, water tubes connecting the headers with the main drum, and mud drums placed around the main drum and connected with the main drum and with the water headers.
2. A boiler of the kind described, comprising a main body portion having an enlarged steam drum, up take fire tubes leading through the boiler proper, down-take fire tubes leading through the steam drum, upper and lower water headers arranged around the boiler, mud drums below the water headers, and connections between the boiler proper, the headers, and the mud drums.
3. The combination with the fire tube and water tube boiler, of superposed series of water tube headers, arranged. around and forming the sidewalls of the boiler, the said headers connecting by water tubes with the boiler.
