Description

No. 854,745. PATENT-ED MAY 28, 1907 K J. KING.
COMBINED FORK AND SPOON.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 15,1906.
Jizzz [67g WlT/VESSES: v r [/VVENTOR A NOR/V1515 UNITED STATES PATENT OIFFICE.
JOHN KING, I or OAKLAND, MAINE.
COMBINED FORK AND SPOON- o use by travelers, sportsmen, and ot er er-.
sons and-has for its object to rovide a ual implement ofthe class descri ed capable of jbeing readily folded so as to take up very lit- 1 tle space when not in use.
45 A further object of the invention is to ro- .vide a pair of pivoted members one of w ich constitutes a spoon and the other a fork, said members being provided with inter-engaging parts so that themembers may be securely 2o locked in both open and closed position.
A still further object of the invention is to generally improve this class ofdevices so as to add to their utility and durability as well asto reduce the cost of manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the inventionconsists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being undero stood that various phanges in the form pro-T "portions and minor details of the construction can be resorted to Within the scope of the ap ended'claiins.
In t e accompanying drawings forminga 3 5 part of-this specification: Figure 1 is a per- A spective view of a combined fork andspoon constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showi the pivoted members folded and locked in c osed position. -Fig. 3iis a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig.2; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2..
Similar'numerals of. reference indicate the 45 corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings. The improved device consists of a pair of pivoted members one of which constitutes a spoon 5 and the other a fork 6. The mem- 5o bers are provided with ektensions or shanks 7 and 7 pierced by a pivot bolt 8, each member being'provided with spaced lateral en- Iargements as indicated at 9. Formed in the Specification of Letters Patent;
Application filed March 16, 1908. Serial No. 306,263.v

upper face of the shank 7 at the enlargements 9 are grooves or depressions 10 forming looking lugs 11 adapted to engage corresponding recesses or sockets 12 stamped or otherwise formed in the adjacent face of the shank 7.
It'will thus be seen that when the pivoted members are moved to open position the lugs 11L will. enter the sockets 12 and lock the shanks 7 and 7 in alinement with each other so that the device may be used either as a fork or spoon and when the members are moved to closed position the sockets will also interengage and thereby lock said members in closed position. By having the members pivoted in the manner described when the same are moved to open or closed osition the enlargement 9 of one member Wil engage the convex surface of the adjacent socket and thus deflect the free ends of the members suf ficiently 'to permit the alinement of the shanks, the lugs being forced to their seats in the sockets by the spring action of the shanks.
"When the device is not in use the same may be compactly folded so that the implement may be conveniently carried in the ocket.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is provided an extremely simpleand inexpensive device admirably adapt ed for the attainment of the ends in view. v
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
A device of the class described comprising a pair of pivotally united over-lappin memaving bers each provided with a shank spaced circular enlargement-s adapted to register with each other when the members are in both open and closed position, the side walls of the shanks between the enlargea ments bein disposed in vertical alinement and curved laterally to form an intermediate operating handle, and projections formed in the center of the enlargements of one shank and adapted to enter correspondingsockets formed mthe enlargements of the adjacent shank for locking said shanks in extended or folded position.
- I In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed' my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN KING. Witnesses:
F. H. LYFORD, G. W. EMERSON.
