UNITED PATENT OFFICE.
ANSON C.'MILLS, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO JACKSON FENCE COMPANY, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
EXPANSIBLE WINDING-DRUM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1907.
' Application filed Mar 21,1906. Serial No. 318,036-
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANsoN C. MILLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the comity of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansible VVinding- Drums and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in expansible winding drums and more particularly to such drums for winding wire fences, and its object is to provide the same with means for automatically expanding and contracting the drum; to provide a strong and simple structure; and to provide the same with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1. is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2. an enlarged end elevation of the san1e;Fig.-3. a sectional detail on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4. a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.; and Fig. 5. a detail of the recessed collar.
1 represents a shaft on which the drum is mounted; 2 are collars keyed on the shaft and provided with. a flange 15 at one side, and peripheral recesses 14 having eccentric bottom surfaces.
4 is a ring rotative on the collar and retained thereon by the flange 15 at one side, and a disk 3 at the otherside, which disk is preferably keyed to the shaft. To limit the rotative movement of the ring 4, a projection 9 is provided on the periphery of the disk 3, which projection engages a lug 8 on one of the radial sockets 5 of the ring.
In the sockets 5 are radially movable arms 6 provided with T-heads to which are attached angle bars 7 forming staves to the drum and around which the fence or other material is wound. To limit the outward movement of the arms 6, radial slots 10 are provided in the sockets 5 and pins 11 are inserted in the arms 6 and traverse said slots. The inner ends of the arms 6 engage the eccentric bottom surfaces of the recesses 14, and are forced outward thereby as the ring 4 rotates on the collar 2.
13 is a rod to which the end of the fence wires or other material are attached, which rod is removably supported by hangers 12 rotative on the shaft 1 at their inner ends and supporting the rod 13 at their outer ends. These hangers swing between the angle bars 7 and engage one of the same and thus rotate the rings on the collars and bring the lugs S in contact with the projections 9, and thus expand the drum. When the material is fully wound upon the drum, and the strain thereon released, the rings are easily turned backward on the collars and thus permit the arms 6 to move inward into the recesses 14 and contract the drum and thus release the material wound thereon. The ends of the wires may be detached from the rod 13 by withdrawing the rod endwise from the wires and the hangers 12, or by cutting the wires as preferred.
What I claim is:
1. An expanding drum comprising a shaft, collars fixed on the shaft and having peripheral eccentric surfaces, rings surrounding the collars and rotative thereon, and also having radial sockets, arms radially movable in the sockets and engaging the eccentric surfaces at their inner ends, and bars attached to the arms.
2. An expanding drum comprising a shaft, collars fixed on the shaft and having eccentric recesses in their peripheries, a flange on one sideof each collar, a disk opposite each flange, a ring rotative on each collar, means for limiting the rotation of the rings, radial sockets in the rings, arms radially movable in said sockets, and bars attached to said arms.
3. In an expanding drum, a shaft, collars fixed on the shaft and having eccentric recesses, rings rotative on said collars and having radial sockets, radially movable arms in said sockets and engaging said recesses, ra-
dial slots in the rings, pins in the arms and v cam recesses at their inner ends, means for limiting the movement of the arms and of the rotative member, and bars forming the periphery of the drum and attached to the 5. An expanding drum, comprising a shaft, a collar fixed on the shaft and having cam recesses, a disk fixed on the shaft, a ring rotative on the collar and having radial sockets, a projection on the disk, a lug on the ring and engaging said projection, radially movablefarms in the sockets and engaging the cam recesses in the collar, radial slots in the ring, pins in the arms and traversing the slots, and bars attached to the outer ends of the arms.
6. An expanding drum comprising a shaft, collars fixed on the shaft and having recesses provided with cam surfaces, rings rotative on the collars, means for limiting the rotation of said rings, radial sockets in said rings, radially movable arms in said sockets and engaging the recesses in the collars, means for limiting the outward movement of the arms, bars attached to the arms, hangers journaled on the shaft and engaging one of the bars, and a rod supported by the hangers.
7. An expanding drum comprising a shaft, a fixed member and a rotative member on said shaft, cam recesses in one member and radial sockets in the other member, radially movable arms in said sockets, said arms engaging the recesses at one end and having T-heads at the other end, angle bars attached to the T-heads, means for limiting the rotation of the rotative member and the outward movement of the arms, a rod movable between two of the angle bars, and pivoted hangers supporting the rod.
8. An expanding drum, comprising a shaft, collars fixed on the shaft and having flanges at one side and peripheral recesses having bottom cam surfaces, rings rotative on the collars and having radial sockets provided with radial slots, a lug on one socket, a disk fixed on the shaft and having a projection engaged by the lug, radially movable arms in said sockets and engaging the recesses in the collars, pins in said arms and traversing the radial slots, T-heads on the arms, and angle bars attached to the T-heads.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
